The jump scare in Mulholland Drive was so terrifying for me simply because of how utterly unprepared I was for it. That movie is already so weird, and that scene hit me just right when I watched it.

That jump at the end of "Carrie" was the first one i was ever saw, and I learned to expect them all the time after that, so it spoiled a LOT of future movies for me as a child, since I covered my eyes nearly all the time, lol.
My absolute FAVOURITE jump scares are when you can vaguely see the monster out of focus behind the protagonist. Chilling, especially if the scene is set in the dark. Hereditary used this a few times, and it was so well done. In my opinion, it's the most unnerving type of jump scare. Sort of being able to see the monster but not really is something that haunted me when I was younger, when I thought I could see the outlines of people beside my bed or in the closet. I could talk about this for hours, I absolutely love when they put this in movies.
I hate jump scares, but watched this video to see if Bilbo's sudden transformation made the list. I saw that in the theatre & nearly jumped out of my skin!
That scene of red lipstick face from Insidious was one of the most shockingly scary moment of my entire horror movie experience and it was only an honorable mention not making the list of your top 20? Come on! That scene can easily give anyone a heart attack!!!
Oh, yes. Being raised by super religious people who scared me with demon stories already had me scared of that subject so when I saw it I almost crapped my pants. It scared me BAD. I turned that shuff off to finish later. 😂 and I love scary movies. That should have been number 1.
Signs is among the best stories ever told. It doesn't cover only the alien part of the film, but religion and faith, as well. It's brilliant, and M. Night is a master of his craft. 👍💯
Sloth in Seven. Even if you've already seen the movie, the jump always gets you. He looks so dead and unmoving. You know he's going to move, but unless you've memorized when, you're still gonna jump.
Honestly glad LOTR showed up, that caught me pretty hard the first time I saw it as a kid and taught me that this was no ordinary adventure the character was going to embark.
The one from Mulholland Drive is genuinely disturbing. Idk just something about that one and the way it is realistic and the quick, shocking nature of it just really got to me.
I remember watching a video discussing this scene as the greatest jump scare in film history or something like that. Mind you this was something like three years ago but the thumbnail of this video instantly jogged my memory. This seen was eerie asf and I’ll never forget it. Edit: The video was “David Lynch - How To Do A Jumpscare” by Spikima Movies. Great video indeed.
About time, one of these lists acknowledges the kitchen scene from Paranormal Activity 2. That's easily one of the most underrated jump scares of all time! When I saw it at the movies, literally the entire theater jumped out of their seats.😅
I saw the IT slideshow scare coming from a mile away.. and the clap clap in the conjuring would have been one of the best jump scares in a very long time if they hadn’t played it a thousand times in the trailer.
Actually, we do. Those classic earned their reputation bc of the context of its releases and nowadays tons of movies similar to it were released afterwards. If The Exorcist was released today it will be considered "boring" "tame" bla bla and if The Conjuring, Insidious were released in 1970s it will have the same legacy as The Exorcist now. So yeah, while their legacies r tremendous, they aint anything too original by now If there is one classic that i would love to see more of it it would be The Shining, and Suspiria (just my opinion). Idk why but these two have really unique vibes to it that i havenot seen a lot in mainstream movies
The exorcist made me be able to watch scary movies. I always heard people say it was so fucking scary so I decided to watch it, this was back when I got scared of anything. The exorcist was so not scary that it completely changed my view on scary movies and now nothing is scary.
The Thing is my all time favorite horror movies of all time the build up to the reveal of the creature, the acting, the writing, the score, and the practical effects it's all just perfection
Fun fact about that scene from Carrie. If you watch closely, you'll notice that the cars in the background are driving backwards. So does that mean she was walking backwards originally?

I don't know, part of me thinks the very fact of a horror movie having multiple sequels kind of ruins the horror. Freddie Kruger is a horror icon, but he's become more comical with each subsequent movie. It loses the element of horror once the bad guy has been uncovered, at least for me. Same man and the sound was also jarring.
Same. I still remember it like it was yesterday

The real jumpscare is the sudden switch of narrators
I’m glad somebody else noticed this, lol.
I think it’s the same narrator but with different EQ settings. He probably had to re-record those parts of the video.
That earlier “clap clap” when those hands appeared from that wardrobe is so iconic and terrifying.
Sloth in Seven got me good. I was a senior in high school watching it at home on a psychology class assignment.
I worked the night shift at the hotel where everyone stayed during "Gone Girl." It took everything in me not to discuss my psychology degree and how much I love "Seven" with David Fincher. He was just eating breakfast; I was trying not to be weird.
