In her diary you see the date 3 11, that is the date of the 2011 tohoku earthquake and tsunami that killed 20k and caused the Fukushima meltdown.

This story revolves around the location of an earthquake that caused particularly great human damage in modern-day Japan. Kobe in 1994, Tokyo in 1923, and Fukushima in 2011. For the Japanese, this is more than just a love story.

The first part of the movie shows a boat on a house and you said “you can’t park here〜!”. However to Japanese, the situation a boat on a house represents 2011. 3.11 earthquake and we recognized very quickly because there were so huge tsunamis and even boats landed on middle of town. Therefore the sight is painful and it’s to remember for us. Thank you for watching the movie and I enjoyed it :)

i'm not japanese, but there was a tsunami in late december 2004 in aceh, indonesia that resulted in similar imagery (boat on house). in its heart this movie speaks to japanese culture, but parts like that really speak to a lot of communities that have suffered similar natural disasters.

when I saw that it instantly reminded me of the photo of the boat on the house in the destroyed town from 2011 😢😢😢

Thank you for the wonderful video, and as a Japanese person, there are some things I would like you to know.
If you don't know anything about earthquakes in Japan, you will end up with an ambiguous interpretation of this movie. Both Kobe and the Tohoku region, where Suzume's house was destroyed, suffered damage from the earthquake. In particular, the Tohoku region was hit by a 30m tsunami due to the March 11, 2011 earthquake.
Also, the town that Serizawa said was beautiful was abandoned after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused by the tsunami made it difficult to return home. There is a contrast between the land, which appears to be empty to the disaster victims, and the land that appears to be beautiful to outsiders.
More importantly, it is known that Miyazaki, where the earthquake occurs at the beginning of the movie, and Tokyo, the capital of Japan, have an 80% chance of experiencing a major earthquake within 30 years. Various measures are being taken in Japan to reduce the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by these earthquakes.
A major earthquake and tsunami occurred in Ishikawa on January 1, 2024. I want people to know that this movie shows that Japan is inextricably linked to earthquakes.

I consider Suzume a 2023 movie, and this is probably in my top 3 best movies of 2023. This was the movie that brought me to anime and I fell in love with Japan, it's culture, it's language, it's movies, it's music. I wish I can visit Japan soon.

When the great east Japan earthquake happened, I was an elementary school student. I still remember the TV broadcast that tsunami destroyed every houses and swallowed moving cars. I really like this movie because this movie reminds me today I live isn’t normal thing but some kind of miracle.

I cried while watching this because they made us think that Daijin is the villain of the story. In the end we realised that Daijin was not the one that's opening the doors and is actually helping Suzume and Souta.

Beautiful movie. Who else cried like a baby when the white cat told Suzume to turn her back into a keystone, and when both cats turned just waterfalls broke the heavens. I loved the cats so much.

Actually, that black cat is another keystone, because Souta said earlier that there should be two keystones to suppress the worm, and then the second keystone couldn't withstand it when it was in Tokyo in the middle, that’s why the worm will all flee, and the black cat will free and ask also Daijin to go back and suppress together

The music at the end - it's by the band Radwimps. Their lyrics are always incredibly evocative and poignant and they are a longtime popular band. As for the film, I see so many nods to Miyazaki; can see the director admires him so much.

I remember hearing about it on the news. It felt so surreal, like it shouldn’t have been possible to be as bad as it was. Every time I saw something new it felt like a reminder that it wasn’t just a bad dream. Can’t comprehend how devastating it must have been for Japanese people. That’s a pretty good comparison you made.
