      That's great news! Yes, I think that they are better than most. It would be hard to find another brand that has the same durability/longevity. Not perfect, but for the most part, really good.

    Thanks for this very helpful guide. I'm working on a Mavic crossmax sx now with similar spokes. Although not as bad as in this one because I can now rotate all the nipples. My only problem now is the nipples seems fused with the spokes, and now letting them soak and working them slowly. btw you can buy some metal version of that mavic spoke wrench.

    I wanted to say that I just successfully extracted 6 broken Magic spoke nipples via your technique. All 6 required to be drilled out. My biggest drill bit was 7/32" which left me a decent amount of the remaining nipple. I was able to gently remove it via a very small screwdriver and a small hammer (very gently taps). Then I ran a left handed M7 metric thread tap to ensure the threads were clean.
    For the remaining existing spokes, I am going to lightly sand away the black paint about 1" above the end of the spoke nipple. Then I will apply a bit of heat to the nipple and attempt to get it to turn while holding the flat part of the spoke. If I can gently coax the existing spokes out of the rim, I plan to put some anti-seize compound on the spoke nipple threads and the part of the spoke that ends up surrounded by the tightened spoke nipple. I am hoping this will get me a wheel that can be serviced for another decade.
    Thanks for your extremely helpful video. You are exactly right.......take your time, don't overdrive the frozen nipple, and you can save these vintage Magic rims!

    • @RogueMechanic
      @RogueMechanic  Год назад

      Well done and thank you for your kind words! Good on you for being able to remove six nipples by just drilling out with a 7/32 bit. It took me a much longer time to remove them before adding a high-speed rotary tool (Dremmel) to help with the spoke nipple material removal.
      For the remaining spoke nipples that are seized, I have found that releasing the tension by cutting the spoke sometimes allows the spoke nipple to start turning when it didn't budge while there was tension from the spoke.
      Whenever I install new Zicral spokes, I always coat the part of the spoke that is within the nipple with waterproof synthetic grease and then apply a drop of medium-strength Loctite to the threads. The Loctite also coats the surfaces and prevents corrosion. Grease or anti-seize instead of Loktite on the threads will also work.

    Hi pal, I've just put a pair of Magic crossmax xl wheels on my mtb which have these nipples......I watched another video where the guy put a little oil into each nipple where it meets the spoke without removing the spoke from nipple every day for 3/4 days......He didn't make it clear whether this was to loosen a seized/fused nipple or to prevent seizing/fusing if that makes sense.......Have you any tips for me re this to prevent any issues in the future....Cheers Michael

    • @RogueMechanic
      @RogueMechanic  Год назад +1

      Hi! I definitely recommend doing this as a preventative measure. I make a point of adding a drip between the spoke and the nipple and then, while holding the spoke, go around and turn every nipple approximately 1/8th of a turn and then back to the original position before I start truing the wheel. I do this to every Mavic wheel with FORE drilling that comes into my shop. I believe that this prevents seizing. FWIW, I think that one of the reasons for spokes and nipples seizing (besides the environment), is that because these wheels stay true more than others, mechanics/folks don't turn the spokes/nipples for years. Thanks for your comment! -John

      Hello! I might have what you need, depending on the exact spokes that you are looking for. There are several different spokes for 26" Crossmax wheels. If you send me an email with more details and some photos of the rear hub, I'll see what I can do. Send to roguemechanic at gmail dot com.

    Why do they seem to manufacture these inserts out of such brittle metal? I had to order replacements from a bikeshop in France. I hope they are the correct size. I will order a few straight-fluted extractors.

    • @RogueMechanic
      @RogueMechanic  2 года назад

      I'm not sure why Mavic uses the material that they do for the nipples but overall, it's not a horrible choice because the vast majority of the wheels that have these spokes and nipples do not have any issues whatsoever. For the task of removal, the straight-fluted extractors have worked really well for me.

My inventory is getting pretty thin since it's been over a year since I received any product from Mavic. Do you know the part number for the spoke that you need? I guess that you do since you ordered them already. If you have any questions, just let me know.

    Worse thing is that when the nipple is busted... The spoke that is perfect can't be used again. I hate this. I have perfect spokes but busted nipples. Someone should invent some way to replace Mavic nipples without having to buy spokes

    • @RogueMechanic

      That would be nice, but the way that the spoke nipple is captured on the Zicral spoke, and the limited space available, that would be very difficult.

  • @RoFrMa

    i was thinking that a perfectly fine spoke with a broken nipple is a shame we have to cut it. maybe, with a tiny drillbit destroying the nipple and taking uout the spoke.. then making threads in the tip of the spoke and putting a new nipple that tops against a nut put in that threaded side would be nice. just like how stainless steel spokes habe a bronze tip on a thread in one extreme... sorry for my english. maybe you get my idea??. using the other nipples and threaded ends from other spokes to save it

    Super skills and knowledge , Really Impressive Work, but this is why i am not a fan of Mavic wheels, their performance versus other top notch brands are not superior or equal .....spare parts are hard to find (5years production after these old wheels will go to garbaage), cost reparing does not worth for a bike repair shop

    • @RogueMechanic
      @RogueMechanic  Год назад

      I appreciate your kind words and your opinions. I see it from a different perspective I guess. There are very few top notch brands that produce wheel systems. Most "top notch" brands have wheels that have the components produced by other companies and they assemble them. Mavic doesn't do this. Additionally, their wheels, for the most part, last a lot longer than other brands that used standard stainless steel wire spokes. This being said, working on Mavic wheels require more knowledge and effort (not just reaching into the DT Swiss, Wheelsmith, or Sapim spoke inventory to replace a broken spoke...). It's unfortunate that the least amount of effort is spend when a customer brings his/her wheels into a shop. Most mechanics skip the whole google search for replacement parts a go right to recommending replacing the wheels. This is sad but true. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it! -John

      @@RogueMechanic Your point of view is respectable. I am agree with you nowadays in our society when something is too long for repair (time is money) and spare parts are expensive, generally hard to found, the garbage is the common destination. 100 % against obsolescence. I understand that mavic is production their own spokes etc...but speaking obsolescence i am opening the pandora box maybe thinking that enginerring a too complicate system, and making for such a big compagny to not produce spare parts after 5 years producing is a deliberate way for making sells. You re an artisan, and unfortunetly if i have a Mavic wheelset to repair that noone can in the place we work, my hourly rate will be higher because of my knowlege and because i am the only one (in our working zone). We must keep in mind that a coast repair will be normally less expensive than a new wheelset. In conclusion, high level traditionnal circuit with nice hubs spokes etc...is for me an insurance for long riding hours and infinite possibilites of repair particularry if you race/travel a lot. A classic Sapim X ray can be found nearly in everygood shop. In term of time aging also in 20 years these type of spoke will be still produced. Speaking about technology mabye great hubs and carbon spokes or Berdspokes is an option
