One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite artists ! .. He has a long career full of great music, but it's his early stuff like this, and in particular his first 2 albums that really press my buttons .. Edgy, full of attitude, ultra melodic, and lots of clever and often humorous lyrics .. Simply fantastic !
The whole of his debut album Look Sharp! Is worth a listen. I’d recommend it as a full album listen, if not on the channel, just in your spare time. It’s excellent.
"I'm The Man" is a great song also.....if you look at the photograph of the cover of the album that tells you what persona Joe is adopting: someone that will sell you anything. 😊 Killer bass by Graham Maby (of course). The whole album is fire!
Graham Maby’s bass tone and playing is a deliberate building block for most of Joe’s albums for many years. Joe told Graham he wanted to eschew guitar solos and guitar riffs as a standard go-to, and instead he wanted the bass to stand out. Graham did himself proud. This is a bit of a deeper cut, but still one of his popular ones. The idea got re-explored by Ben Folds Five in One Angry Dwarf And 200 Solemn Faces - the concept of someone who was bullied and pushed around becoming famous and having a bit of a petty but justified ‘screw you guys’ moment.
I just don't know enough superlatives to describe Graham Maby's bass playing, it's 🔥 fire! But great song writing, tight band. Both Look Sharp and I'm A Man albums have this sort of energy. After those albums came Beat Crazy, which was kinda beatnik with songs like Beat Crazy, which Graham Maby sung a fair bit of. A very amusing track on that album was the song Biology. That one, I'd recommend a lyric video so you catch the lyrics! 😂
I’ve recently watched a two part documentary on Graeme Maby , so interesting, he’s very talented and a great story teller , like you I loved his unique sound , he’s over 70 now but still gigs 👍🏴
@@notanotherenigma7759 I like to call myself a bass player too but skills that players like Graham and JJ Burnell display just serve to remind me of MY lowly place in the bass playing Pantheon 😝.. 👍🏴
I agree Chris that for a track like this hearing the album version is preferable as it highlights the fantastic musicianship in all 4 members of the band , yep JJ was the creative driving force , the unique voice and songwriting skills but the other 3 are demonstrating superior craftsmanship that’s hard to fault , particularly Graham Maby their Uber talented bass player .. right up there for me in the bass playing Pantheon . I totally disagree with every fibre of my being Cynthia that there’s any semblance of Ska in this track ..🤷♂️.. but to each their own experience 👀 👍🏴

A classic new wave track from Joe. Great lyrics with a radio 📻 friendly chorus. Confident music from a confident musician. 👌
Great album

Classic Joe Jackson ! Have not heard this for an Age ! Cheers for the memory Jog !!
I don't know much of joe jacksons music but most of what i have heard has always been catchy, steppin out is probably my favourite from him!
Great artist Joe Jackson, this album and "Look Sharp" are two of his best.

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering , I play bass too, and like Graham, favour a more modern, thinner sound.
