I've observed that the majority of accidents involving e-bikes tend to occur among less-experienced riders who inadvertently move forward while attempting to stop and dismount the bike. The bike can move forward due to pedal assist when slight pressure is applied to the pedal. To prevent this, riders can either turn the bike off before dismounting or ensure that their hand is on the brake to disengage pedal assist.
When you frame a crash caused by a car driver opening a door without looking as an "accident" you are removing blame and responsibility of the car driver. When bicyclists are told to ride on the lookout (which they should always do) you are in effect transferring the responsibility from the driver to the bike rider. Why have we surrendered our streets to automobiles and relieving them of any of the responsibility they have when they injure or kill pedestrians and bicyclists? I see news articles all the time where pedestrians are killed and the car drivers aren't even issued a ticket. If you choose to travel in a big chunk of steel and you kill somebody on foot or riding a bike then you are responsible. Don't shift the blame to the victim. Your observations about obstructions in bike paths would never be tolerated by car drivers. They would demand that obstructions be removed and would be infuriated if you told them they had to suck it up, slow down and move carefully around a post. We have built communities where it is not safe to walk or bicycle. Time to turn the tables and make motorized vehicles second class citizens.
in New Jersey the law is 4ft clearance for bikes at less than 25MPH check your local police and see zero citations they dont enforce bicycle laws and its open season on electric bikes and scooters i feel the hate
I was under the impression that kids under 14 were not legally permitted to ride ebikes. That being said, I applaud any safety course that teaches kids safe riding skills. My personal gripes are: 1) riding on the wrong side of the road. I do not know why this is misunderstood, but in my area I see this done by both kids and adults. 2) riding at dusk or at night without any lights. 3) running stop signs or traffic signals at intersections.
actually in most states e-bikes are bicycles and no license , insurance or registration needed. Anyone , any age can ride one as long as they follow the traffic laws and children under 16 wear a helmet.
Dude, that's life. You lock your front door so robbers don't walk in. You look both ways before crossing the street to avoid getting hit by a pack of startled sheep. This video is how to make riders safer so there's no opportunity to address drivers. You're welcome to stand on principle and ride next to cars if you want.
In California it is a violation of the vehicle code section 22517 to open a car door if it changes the flow of traffic in any way. That included bikes needing swerve to miss the door. I believe it's never enforced. I wound up unconscious in the hospital when I was hit by a opening door. The guy that did it never got cited.
The USA and others need to catch up with the Dutch. Many of their cycle lanes are physically separated from cars AND pedestrians. Introducing the Dutch Reach to the driving test, where you turn your body to open your door with the furthest hand allows you to see approaching cyclists. Seeing small children on their own or the queen cycling is normal. In some countries in a collision between a car and a bike the driver is assumed innocent, so for cyclists to get justice they may have to gather evidence and beat the insurance company lawyers in court while badly injured. Cyclists in The Netherlands are assumed innocent.
OK good points but I have ridden all my life and ride many E-bikes of my own design and construction. I have had more wrecks just riding than involving other vehicles because I follow the belief EVERYONE IN A CAR WANTS TO KILL ME! style of cycling in traffic. You and your bike? perhaps 250lbs. average car 2000 lbs = you have no chance or right away. thinking right away around traffic today is Lemming thinking! Next take it easy, speed is not your friend in tight traffic helps you focus on the things going on around you. Eye contact! never roll out in front of a moving or stopped vehicle unless you make eye contact with the driver. or the car is parked. But not paying attention will get you in trouble fast that one second you let your guard down , you can be bouncing off the ground. E-bikes are much faster than standard bikes and you tend to forget you are traveling twice the normal bicycle speeds and stopping and turns will get fuzzy faster than you expect at times. But I thought you were going to touch on the safety hazards involving the e-bikes nature not traffic safety as much. Number one e-bike danger to me is the throttle! or full grip throttles that are powered on at all times. Meaning folks will and have hit the throttle unwillingly and end up bouncing off the ground. Never get on and off your e-bike while it is ON. only turn it on when you are seated and brakes are engaged. PAS ( pedal assist system) can be very dangerous if you are jumping your bike over curbs, speed bumps. cadence system are the most dangerous especially if they come on pretty much full power up the speed! for any power setting other than 0 or 1. Folks here in America have mixed feeling towards bikes and e-bikes in general. I have had folks cuss me, throw things at me even shoot at me for no other reason than I was riding a bike of some sort? and trust me I stay as close to the curb as I can and will hit the sidewalks where I can. but some folks are scary. be careful out there.
You are the exception to the typical ebike rider because you have actual experience and knowledge. It is insane to be giving inexperienced cyclists a machine capable of a constant 20-28-40mph, and lulling them into a false sense of safety by labeling it with the friendly name "ebike".
40 years driving a commercial truck ( yes the 18 wheel type) one thing learned very quickly is NEVR trust any car/truck, etc parked on the side of the rd. as a motorcyclist same there. but all should remember, you can sue the person opening that door for assault with s deadly weapon - - assault is a action not a “ thing” - - . it states in the dmv hand book snd in the laws that the person opening the door is required to check before opening said door. sure you can sue. but if on a motorcycle, bicycle. you could be hurt or worse in a coffin.
Bad brakes or a lack of tech to adjust is what Ive seen in many minor bumps or collisions. My sister said some e biker hit her at slow speeds but no damage and I knew the guy had issues with his brakes due to high speeds and constant stopping from the speeds the brake system is the number one issue many overlook or not thinking they need to adjust the right stopping power. I was one of them when younger and knew I had to start being tech savy with my bike on the parts of tuning bike for overall safety over cosmetic.
The best way for me was driving my E bike on the road and not Kris Kross and am in NYC.drivers don't respect Those bikes lines and if you don't make them see you on the street they will hit you and say is your fault
I cut, three inches off my handlebars to make it easier to manoeuvre between obstacles. And it has made a big difference. Cruiser bike handle bars are generally too wide to be safe.
There shouldn't be cars parked to the right of a bike lane.. the bike lane should be the rightmost lane on a street. find someplace else to park your damn cars, not on MY bike lane
You are advising people to ride in the door zone and be alert. That is better than being oblivious, but it is bad advice. The best advice is to never ride in the door zone. Ever. No matter how alert you are, you could still get clipped. On an e-bike with 20 or 28 MPH assist, taking the main travel lane is (in almost every case) much safer than risking death by car door. If you are going to choose to ride in the door zone, I would advise going EXTREMELY slow. Like 5 mph slow.
I would think that most people would just be falling over? But yeah, look out for stuff going on on the right side in the bike lane. Cars coming out of alleys and driveways. People backing up out driveways and parking spots.
It may not be the direct cause but any accident, no matter how it happens, is made worse in the amount of damage caused, by speed. Second is the combined weight of the rider and bike at a given speed. Between two bikes traveling at the same speed, it is the heavier package which will deliver a greater blow. If you manage to fly off the bike and become separated from it, if the bike catches up with you then it is the weight of the bike landing on you that may cause added hurt on top of whatever you sustained while landing apart from it.
Is a bike accident really an accident? I'm 65 and been riding on roads since I've been 5 and not too many negative problems. I always have known vehicles will always win so being on the ball while riding. Folks riding bikes/e-bikes too fast. Being a road cyclist most of my life and more used to speed and making some quick decisions on occasion I see e-bikes new to cycling doing things that may cause them grief. Slow down. 😮
I have 6 ebikes, the most important thing on my bikes is the left side rear view mirror!
I've observed that the majority of accidents involving e-bikes tend to occur among less-experienced riders who inadvertently move forward while attempting to stop and dismount the bike. No. Actually you just told me the #1 cause of ebike accidents is poor ebike infrastructure.

How do children learn the traffic laws if they didn't learn?@@dalvenable331
It's a shame that the responsibility is on bicycle riders for their safety instead of on the drivers of automobiles that have invaded city streets.
What are the legal precedents on these type of accidents in the USA?

@@KimMilvang zip nada! Insurance companys wont insure ebikes and wont cover claims 🙄

Proper seat angle might help people believe you know what your talking about
Thanks for watching! The seat angle is perfect for that model, we've logged a lot of miles on that ebike!
Seat angle appears fine. What do you see?
#1 cause is gravity, and #2 is cars.

many DIY and even manufactures will mistakenly use the old bicycle brakes on their e-bikes. brake systems designed to stop you at 15.5 mph not 30 mph.
