Cory from 2024 here: Another year, another batch of wonderful (and passionate) viewers and commenters continue to spin by the video. It's great to see you here (unless you're mean, then not really). Recently I've been sporting a Timex Weekender with a custom leather strap, which I'm really loving. Still got the Seiko, and between the two, they're covering all of my watch needs. Still no desire to return to an Apple Watch. What watch are you wearing in 2024?
Rolex Air King that I got 25 years ago. I will never change to a smart watch both because of the reasons you stated and because I’m a mechanical watch aficionado. Also, an Apple Watch depreciates like hell from day 1. A fine mechanical watch will keep its value forever or even appreciate in value over time. Apple Watch is a horrible investment
Man how did I stumble upon this video? Haha! As for the watch - I ditched the Apple Watch last year, and been rocking a Seiko 5 Sports GMT Reinterpretation in Blueberry colourway - so far, happy with the decision!
Same dude.. I was thinking about to get one and I searched something like "Why people still prefer traditional watch over smart watch" and this video recommended on Google.. and Bam !!
There really is a certain magic to looking at the sweep of a second hand on a mechanical watch, knowing that there’s a huge amount of cogs and springs underneath the dial working in perfect harmony. It’s lovey to look down at your wrist and have that break from the digital world!
We all need to unplug and relax. I would like to suggest you leave ALL your electronics at home, pick-up a bottle of water and go for a walk. Let your mind unwind and discover the world around you that you missed looking at your iWhatever. It is very therapeutic.
I'd take at least a phone, you never know when you might need to call an emergency, it can literally save your life. Just leave it in your pocket, don't think about it and don't check it.
I owned an Apple Watch for two years. One day, I decided that I had enough of technology because my whole life was based on it. Today, I've gone back to simple things: A small alarm clock wakes me up in the morning, a paper calendar organizes my life, a watch gives me the time and the date, a small notebook is used to take notes. In short, I have made technology a tool among others, and not my only way to manage my life. Owning "physical" objects is like having toys as a child. There is something soothing and fun about it. We won't lie, it's fascinating to be able to access your calendar or your messages with a flick of the wrist, but it's stressful to carry such a powerful object on your arm every day and you have to ask yourself "Do we really need it?
I love your comment! You’re so right! This is what I want to do but it seems like a lonely life considering most people don’t think similarly. Just observe how disengaged people are out in public with one another. I would love to be around more people like you.
It's great that you noticed it. It's the little, physical details that fill our life. Those give a little pause and a gushing confort to use. The closest "smart" thing that gave me a similar joy was an e-book. It's the simpler things, that we really enjoy.
You shouldn't go around throwing the word "everyone" because you can never account for everyone. I for one, as well as my colleges as physicians value what the apple watch can provide for us immensely. We get paged dozens if not hundreds of times when we're in the hospital, we get work emails throughout the day constantly. To be able to quickly glance at the message and decide if it's something I need to deal with right away or for later, especially during times when we can't use our phones like in the OR or when we're with a patient provides so much value. And that's literally just one of its most simple functions. Another personal reason I love my apple watch is to be able to locate my phone, such a time saver that function is.
@@eatcheesekobe as an investor the reason why i love my mechanic watches because they go up in value overtime its good for diversifying my portfolio because it gives me ROI (return on investment) considering its an asset im happy to diversify my portfolio on watches even though i dont really like watches but its a lucrative one for me than smartwatch.
@@DarthVader-fu2nr I think that is what he is saying when he says he buys mechanical watches - the trick of course is to buy the right mechanical watches.
@@alexthomas7712 that made no sense at all, how is wanting to see your email and pages on your watch a determining factor in work performance? I’m an EMT and can attest to my apple watch being a great help, I have a watch face that I customized with a timer and a stopwatch, I use the timer to set it to one minute and I count respirations and pulse and the watch tells me when the time is up so I don’t have to constantly look back and forth and possibly miss something. I use the stop watch for running a code/cardiac arrest, as soon as we start compressions I can quickly tap my stopwatch widget and I can see how long I’ve been doing, I tap the lap when we complete a cycle, at the end of the code I have an accurate account for how many cycles of cpr we completed. I can also easily tell siri to remind to do something in the watch like check vitals in five minutes and she will do it, and it works way better than telling her to do it on my phone because we don’t want to be pulling our phones out for everything. If I’m with a patient doing something I need to remember to tell the nurse what is happening and I don’t have time to chart it I can just Tell siri to make a note of it and then I can check it when giving report. It is extremely helpful
Yep I did the same. But my main reason (Just like Airpods) I got sick of always having to charge it every night. So I brought the TIMEX Expedition Scout (Analogue) Watch. Its powered by solar and it glows in the dark. It will never die. I did the same with my Apple Airpods got rid of them and now use regular headphones instead. The greatest thing now is that I only have to charge 1 device (my smartphone) every night instead of 3. Hope this helps
For me I have to charge my laptop, my Nintendo Switch, my two phones (one is my main phone which has no headphone jack and the other is my old phone which has my FLAC music albums, emulated games, and manga on it and an actual headphone jack for my Salnotes 7hz Zero IEMs), my 8Bitdo Pro 2, my power bank, and my wireless earbuds. That's already seven devices I have to charge. Recently it came time for me to replace my watch, a fragile Timex which kept breaking. My birthday was coming up, so one of my family members asked me if I would like to be gifted a smartwatch. I contemplated it for a while, realizing that my desk was already a jungle of cables and that I'd much rather NOT have another thing to charge. Plus smart watches are often fragile, which was exactly what I was looking to avoid. So I just went with a good old analog G-Shock GA140. Oh, and yes, I have both wired and wireless earbuds. The reason is because wireless earbuds are way more convenient, enough that I'm actually willing to go through the hassle of having to charge them. Not like smart watches which don't really provide much utility imo since your phone can do what it does anyways, and I'm not really the type to want to check my notifications in a scenario where checking my watch is more appropriate (i.e. a meeting), I just want to check the time. But anyways, the reason I also have wired IEMs in addition to the wireless earbuds is because sometimes I like to sit down and really get immersed in the music rather than just leaving it as background music. Which high quality wired IEMs are good at doing, and why I keep my music on the phone that actually has a headphone jack. I am aware that you can get a USB-C headphone, but the quality can't beat 3.5mm which is analog.
Solar powered watches for the win! I just got a Citizen eco-drive chronograph solar watch and I couldn't be happier with it. Got my eyes on a nice solar G-Shock too.
Finally!!! I REAL person talking realistic. I was tempted to buy one, but the simplicity of having a regular watch for the time and date is more than a helpful tool. And that's all we need.
Cory from 2022 here: I have the same Apple Watch that I've had since 2019, but at one point it ran out of battery and I just forgot to charge it and put it on again 😂 I picked up a nice chrono watch here in Austria that I really like, I really love how I don't have to charge it all the time 😂 Please continue to be kind in the comments. The passion of the watch community is really cool, thanks for commenting and everything!
Automatic watches are the best. As long as you keep wearing it, no need a power source other than you. I highly recommend my personal favourite, the Seiko 5 (OG Dress, not sport) watch
Yep. I have 2 watches. A cheap digital for day to day use and jogging. And a nice analog watch for dressing up a bit. That's it. Neither one ever needs charging and will probably last decades.
Agreed. I use a G-Shock GW-5000, Seiko Samurai Diver, a Hamilton Field Watch, and a Casio Oceanus. Two quartz, one automatic, and one mechanical hand winder. Each for different occasions. More than I will ever need, really. Even if I only had one basic watch, I would be happier than if I had a smart watch.
KH B also research has shown that. Being on technology more than 2 hrs a day and interefere with how your brains works. And we dont realize that avg american spend 5-10hrs of total time being on technology
Cory from 2023 here: As is tradition, I'm continuing to update on my life-long progress to milk this video and comment section as much as possible. I've been wearing a simple Seiko for the last year and a bit, and it's on almost constantly. I haven't missed the Apple Watch one second. My watch continues to be just that: a watch. Please continue to be kind in the comments. What watch are you wearing in 2023?
Cory I was just wondering if you ever went back to an occasional Apple Watch and then I saw your update! Good for you!! I switch out my apple watch for my regular watches now and then depending on what I am doing, but it you don't miss the Apple Watch, then good for you!! Great video and thanks for the recent update!!!
I wore a Seiko for 15 years :) Love them and will get one for my son as a graduation gift and one more for myself. Last 3 years I've worn a Huawei digital watch to track my steps, sleep quality and blood pressure, plus minimum notifications. Incidentally, my dad loved the look of the watch and wanted a step counter, I got him one too. It paid off handsomely one day shortly after, the alarm went off detecting his blood pressure went high. However, the spat between the US and China put an end to the watch's ability to update the software, and Apple took a step further by not supporting it at all, but works with Androids. So a bit of a bummer. Watch still runs fine, and the battery life is a week and a half to two weeks between charges.
I’ve slowly been using an analog watch myself. I realized how much I’ve missed using one! As for my Apple Watch I still use it as I used to as a fitness tracker and for long distance running (GPS). But now when I attend events I prefer to use my analog watch. It feels so good to be “disconnected” sort to speak! It’s crazy to say that but it’s true. I have configured my watch for specific notifications which has been ideal. Now just finding the balance between to two watches makes it a ton more fun!!
I have an Apple Watch Ultra and am in the process of switching back to a vintage Seiko. In complete agreeance with all the points you made. It's really hard to disconnect with an apple watch on your wrist. Also, having to constantly be worrying about charging while travelling.
Cory from 2021 here: Hi there! So, people are still finding this video. Maybe you are one of those people. I'd love to point out that this was 2017, this was my experience at the time, and this is not a judgement on literally anybody. I hope you enjoy and find satisfaction in whatever watch you choose to have. Lots of strong opinions and feelings, and so if you're feeling like you need to jump in with your strong opinions and feelings, go for it! Keep it civil if you can (some of you can't, good gracious). (lol also I was gifted an Apple Watch in 2019 that I still wear get wrecked past Cory)
I don't blame you at all. I was an Apple Watch hater but I got a mind switch. The Apple Watch got some cool upgrades for health track and I'm buying one today. I'm a very healthy individual but I'm almost on my 40s and I have to watch out for my family u know. The heartbeat control, with the oxygen level in the blood and all that kinda stuff really made up my mind.
People need to stop blindly disliking videos that critique the Apple Watch. It has a lot of bells and whistles, but at the end of the day it's an expensive watch that tells the time and after a week or two it loses its novelty
We are over connected all the time. The same happened to me. I got sick of it. I hate that I have to charge it everyday, I hated the reminder to stand up every hour, I hated to be obsessed with how much calories I was burning during my morning walks with my dogs, etc. I think we loose liberty. I now have a Skagen analog watch which I love because the simplicity. I just need to know the hour and count the seconds when I’m counting the heart beats of a patient, or checking her breads per minute. Good video.
Amen brother! 3 years later this video is as relevant as ever. I just bought the SE version and returned it a week after. I love my simple analog watch as well. I don't use it often, but when I do - it's simple, non-distracting and reliable.
well smartwatches are made for active people with active lifestyle so... let bygons be bygons. also, why buy it in the 1st place? did you bought it for notifications? sports?
I read a book today, sat on my couch, put on my dab radio with music station. I switched my sim from my tablet to my Nokia brick. It was settling, relaxing.
you just experienced the 'black side of tech'... You're completely right about staying connect 24/7. This kind of thing steals from us some precious time with family and God, even we're very well organized and diligent, in some moment we end up switching what is real important for something that might me important and it's not important in the exactly moment. (reflection Ef. 6:12)

Coming from an Apple Watch (for 2 years) and finding out becoming fascinated with how traditional watches worked to measure time has had me sold on going back to wearing normal watches. I too feel it is impractical to take out a cellphone just to look at the time like this current generation does. Ever since I discovered my love for mechanical watches and how they work to measure time, the craftsmanship that goes into making these little soulful machines for us to wear on our wrists, I can happily say that I’m never going back to wearing a smartwatch. Ever. There is beauty in simplicity.
Been wearing the same G-Shock through multiple deployments to Afghanistan in 04 and Jordan in 07 through my transition back to a civilian and to the present. Still running strong and till taken through the paces. Apple watches are just that a fashion statement. Give me a solar powered mud man or Casio pro tek any day.
Those G-Shocks will work until you die (given that you replace the battery every +- 5 years). That Apple watch will last till Apple stops supporting that watch (whenever that may be, 3 years maybe?) Best trade deal ever.
As funny as it may sound, I purchased a Seiko 5 mechanical because I felt too connected to my smart phone and I want to go back to where things are so simple. Since then, I just do not feel the urge to look at my phone anymore and as long as my mechanical watch is on my wrist, it will continue to charge up. A Casio will bey next purchase.
Stopped wearing mine besides bedtime which became a very expensive alarm clock.. switched to traditional analog watches and the odd Gshock for that exact reason of “just telling the time” also which will last a lifetime and I can pass down to my son
I went the same way to my watch. And the main reason was distractions. Current tech (both smart* watch and phone) is not smart enough to decide which notification at which moment is really important to the receiver. Even real humans struggle to identify whether it war right moment or not to get notified about something. So what is current solution manufacturers found? Yes, let us to turn it always on or off. (DND mode doesn't help much). Useless. Worrying about charging is another example of distraction. However, for some people these distractions may play a positive role in case they don't have any other events in their life and might feel them less lonely.
I have always been a big fan of regular watches. I have friends who just bought apple watch and all those technology’s but regular watch works well for me.
When I used to work retail, there was a customer who looks like in his late 30s, scoffed at my Timex Waterbury Chrono and bragged about how cool he was because he has an Apple Watch. I just gave him a look that says, "what are you, 5?" That customer's $300+ wrist computer will eventually turn into a wearable paperweight as soon as the battery dies out and/or Apple stops providing updates for it, whichever comes first. And I've used Apple products long enough to know their stance on third-party or user-initiated repairs. Meanwhile, with a simple battery change (after 3-4 years of service) my Timex, as their old slogan goes, will take a licking and keep on ticking.
Getting bored of my apple watch,no use except time , occasionally workout data, charging daily is a big letdown ,going for analog watch , simplicity is best only u realise it later
Not to mention every few months having to update the software. I don't wear watches too often, but I have 7 regular watches and I like all of them more than the Apple watch Se that I have. All 7 watches combined cost less than the Apple watch did, definitely have buyers remorse over purchasing it.
I’m also getting bored of my Apple Watch which I’ve had for 2 years. I hardly use it and one reason is cause of the awful battery life. I was given my Apple Watch for free
Totally agree with everything you’re saying, I just bought the Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular), I thought it was the best thing ever. I was so hyped about it some people I knew had it & they liked theirs, features seemed cool & all. I think it was just a phase where I thought I needed it, but in the end I really didn’t. It’s soo overpriced, not worth it in my opinion, unless you’re a die hard Apple fan, also a big fitness person. I only just bought it in March and now it’s the 1st of May & today I’ve decided to go back to my traditional watch that I absolutely love that just tells me the time & date. Also my wrist feels lighter not having to wear the Apple Watch bc it was heavy. With the Apple Watch yeah I’ll admit it was handy to see the notifications if I didn’t have my phone but as the weeks got on I barely used the apps on it, I only just looked for the time and date. I was just it annoying. Also having to charge it was also annoying, when you got a traditional watch you wouldn’t have to worry about that sort of thing. The workout app is really useful if you go to the gym or exercise but as for me I’m no fitness person so I didn’t really care.
Nothing beats the mechanical/Automatic/Quartz movement watches. These watches will last you a lifetime without needing to “upgrade” every 2 years or charge every couple of hours. Plus, the engineering it’s really beautiful.
I was on the fence about getting a smart watch and I think I'll feel the same as you, one more device to charge, sync and learn. Plus it's literally strapped to you all the time... My phone addiction is bad enough!
I totally agree. I loved my Pebble watch but after going to a few other smart watches I find I always go to my regular watches and have found a new appreciation for a good solid watch.
Great video man. I went through something similar. The notifications get annoying after awhile. You throw your phone across the room just to get notifications about your “exercise rings”? It’s ridiculous 😂 just bought a Bertucci and I love it. It’s simple, rugged, and tells me the time.
My dad: I will never waste money to buy a smart watch. I walk every day and if I want to check my messages, I'll use my phone. Also my dad: *proceeds to use a smart watch gifted to me that I left back at home (didn't suit my use case) citing:* The battery may not work if I don't use it. Lol.
commenting from 2022: my boyfriend bought me an Apple Watch and I ended up returning it. I'd like to say I really enjoy a bigger screen that the Apple Watch offers. But it is not aesthetically pleasing compared to my other traditional watches. AT THE SAME TIME, IT DOES NOT Simplify my life either. I have one more thing to charge and one more screen to check 😂😂😂.
I'm one of the few in my group of friends that don't use smart watches for this reason. I would leave my smart watch uncharged for months cuz I forgot to charge it, but the whole time I felt I still needed a watch on my wrist to tell the time. In a way, using a smart watch was actually like taking a step back in technology, and gave me an extra chore monitoring the battery level.
Having an Apple Watch saved my relationship with my teenage daughter. One night, she texted me on her iPhone that she needed me to pick her up and I didn’t because my iPhone wasn’t next to me as I slept. She was irate with me! So, I bought an Apple Watch which alerts me (a noticeable vibration on my left wrist and a loud ping sound) wherever a text message arrives. Now, I never miss her text messages because I wear my Apple Watch all the time when she’s away from home.
You’ve put it in words so beautifully and accurately.. We actually need to simplify our lives rather than more n more technology making our lives more complicated.
Great video. I was toying with the idea of getting a smart watch just to really change watch faces and have a new face every couple of days. I do wear Timex and Casio watches so might just go with your plan. 😊
Still usefull! I was going back and forth about if I should make the switch to a smart watch. A lot of your reasons for no longer using yours are very close to the reasons I have not bought one to date, and you reminded me those reasons are still valid and current. Thank you!
As a Human Being, I am tired of *too much* Technology. I love my Television, my Music System, my Smart Phone & my Internet Connection. Everything else, is just becoming a headache. I mean, forget about using Advanced Gadgets, even charging them is a huge pain for me. A few months ago, I spent a good amount of money on Fitness Band & Smart Watch. I was already charging 4 Devices (Phone, Tablet, Laptop, Earphones) at different times. Now, I had 2 more to charge. I did it for quite some time. Finally, I decided to drop the Fitness Band & Smart Watch. Frankly, I used to forget to even look at the Fitness Band (😄😄😄). Also, I never really found it easy to get used to Notifications & Alerts on the Smartwatch. So, I went back to my Regular Electronic Digital Watch. Now, I am leaving a more peaceful & painless life. 😊😊😊
I agree with you Why do you need a tiny unreliable screen on your hand while you already have a smartphone in your bucket? I sold my Samsung Gear S3 frontier after two weeks of using it. I knew that watch wouldn't survive my abusive life style 😂 Instead, I got an indistrcutable Casio G shock Mudman
Totally agree with you. I got an Apple Watch and hardly wear it. What’s the point when in a year it goes out of fashion. I use my normal analog watch it never needs charging just put it on a go!
Hey I appreciate this comment! A lot of people seem to want to place that burden on others, but I try to make my videos more informative about my own decision-making process. Cheers friend, I appreciate the positivity.
I am into simple things, always have. I bought my daughter a smart watch two years ago, she gave it to me because she isn't into watches at all. I put it up in the closet for more than a year and thought since the watch just sitting in the closet that I can wear it. I wore it for 1 week and now back to my $15 good regular watch.
Each time when i feel like buying a smartwatch i will rewatch this video and it really makes sense ... i tried apple watch and gave up.. but still at some point i feel like i can have one for no reason.. but then i saw your video...!! and yes there is people who are extremely happy with smartwatches but not me ....
Hey Cory, thank you for your insight. I needed some confirmation on whether I should buy a classical watch or a smartwatch. I already had one but I was planning to got for a Samsung or Huawei. Now I will just buy hopefully a nice Timex watch and I will be more than happy with it. As I also have not used my smartwatch for anything besides checking the time and date. Thanks again!
Great video. Thanks for sharing your experience. I totally had the same sentiment recently. I'm now back to wearing an inexpensive Seiko 5 automatic and love having a bit more "analog" in my life. Plus, I agree with you -- not having an extra charger when traveling is one less thing to worry about!
Nice! I don't judge or fault anyone for liking the technology they enjoy or for liking Apple Watches and all that, it's all about finding your own groove and figuring out what works for you. The charger thing though...so good.
I was getting tired of my stainless steel Apple Watch, but then I purchased a couple bands on Amazon to combine with different outfits and I find it more appealing now!
I just found you and love this video. My Dad was a watch jeweler. He repaired watches for years so I love analog watches. I have the wrist watch my Grandfather wore through WW I. So glad a young person realizing how electronics are tying us down. Mind you I’m writing this on my IPad Pro 12.9 lol 🤪 Anyway again, great video.
Were you a watch guy before getting a smart watch? I wasn't but bought a Galaxy watch for notifications and texts and calls and a timer. It's useful for me in my job for that, but I can get by without it. I always did before. For now I like it ok. It's not great, but I like it enough to keep wearing it, but I have been looking at regular watches. Mostly what I use my smart watch for is the time and date.
I don’t use smart watch either but i took a different approach. I use a sports watch on my left hand, and use a smart band on my right hand to track my sleep, steps and heart beat, i turned the notification off and it’s battery lasts around 20 days. I don’t like to press button to see the time, so i am thinking about using another clock on my right hand instead of the band but don't know where i will put the band to track my fitness. 😄
I enjoyed watching your video .the only watch ive had for 10 years is the casio mens digital watch.use it when i dont want to carry my phone it has the time, alarm clock and stop watch and that all i need .living a simple life and disconnecting from technology is underrated but necessary
Same here. I only use my smartwatch to check the date and time, and it's a hassle to charge it every night. An automatic watch can even sit for 24 hours because it has a power reserve and once you wear it again it again fills it out its power reserve. Plus, a good watchh can last for 10+ years whether it's automatic or quartz.
I have my good old trusty seiko diver kinetic I wear most of the time and a garmin watch I wear when I go for a jog. Sometimes I get out the door for a jog before I realise I have not changed my watch and dont bother going to get the garmin because it's probably flat anyway. I tried wearing the garmin full time but got sick of it going flat.
I have an AW series 8 that I wear for everyday usage, a G Shock 2100 for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and a seiko for special occasions when I need to dress up. So far, works for me. May or may not upgrade AW when this one out dates
For me, the need to frequently charge a smartwatch has always been a deal killer. I tend to leave my watch on my wrist, even when showering or swimming. In fact, about the only time I have to remove my watch is when going through a security checkpoint.
I used to have an Apple Watch gen 3. I found that I was working for the watch rather than having the watch work for me. I was always finnicking with the music features to try to get them to work right and was always paranoid about my watches charge level. The worst part was, when I’d raise my wrist, it seldomly told me what I was looking for (the time). It became another vise. Now I cycle through a handful of mechanical automatic watches.
As amazing as the technology and aesthetics of Apple Watches are, he hits all the reasons why I won’t get one. I wear a regular watch that tells time. When I need to look at my phone, I look at my phone (& I’ve been trying to do that less, not more).
it depends. People like smart watches that keep track of their time, health, records in runs, etc. Some people like simple things just because it's neat, while others are messy or organized and very complicated.
honestly I would take my Citizen, G-shock, or proTrek, over any smart watch, I know they do a ton of stuff, but like with my Citizen, it feels like class on my wrist, perfect everyday field watch, my G-shock, has been with me forever, and never needs adjusting , and my proTrek, is what I were for work as a survival instructor, or any of them. I feel we are rapidly going down a hole, where we feel we have to keep up with this never ending awesome tech, but at the same time we are losing so much, all my watches are solar, so I never have to worry about the battery, not for 15 years at least with each unit.
@@corydhmiller That is a good question, all of them are very good. I would highly recommend my G-Shock. AWGM100-1A. It only cost $150, it has lasted over 12 years in the field teaching desert survival skills, and has shown very little signs of giving up. It is Solar, and has atomic time, plus a ton of other stuff that I never really used. The only down side to the watch is the LCD displays are a little small, but once set I have never had to mess with it.
great honest review! I also went through a similar realisation as you. I bought a Garmin Fenix 3 to be my "do it all-watch". I used it for workouts, smart notifications and casual wear. After a while I gave up on the smart features and just used it to tell time and for workouts and ended up trading it for an analog Tissot this Christmas!
I've just done this as of last night. I sat and thought why I actually have an Apple Watch - I don't use the apps on it, I'm sick of always being connected and a notification come on, sick of charging it in all honesty. I've become over reliant and always checking it. I don't even need to know how many hours I've slept etc. I think smart watches (from my experience) it results in over reliance on "stuff". Arghhhhh
Yeees thank you I Was thinking of buying a fit band or a smart watch but I want to be able to miss notifications.. enjoy my life. Be present and enjoy the moment
I'm now watching this 6 year old video and I can completely relate to what you're saying. I started with a Galaxy watch 3. I wore it for a while, then it had to be the Pixel watch that was new on the market at the time. I felt good. Sleep tracking, step monitoring, health metrics, notifications, making phone calls with the watch, using Google Assistant. cool. - now, after almost a year, I'm stressed by the clock. It doesn't add any value to me. I will take off your watch today and wear one of my automatic watches. pity about the money.
Here in 2020....i feel the same way brother! Just bought 3 G shocks for the price of my galaxy watch lol. I hated that you had to have it charged and I was way too wrapped up into it!
Are you still wearing a regular watch instead of the Apple Watch? For me it’s kind of annoying having to charge a watch. I recently purchased a Citizen Eco Drive women’s watch since you don’t need to change the battery (it charges with light) and I’m actually quite happy with it!
Most realistic most unbiased...non fanboy shit ...no sheep of the herd...hats off...love people who speak about anything based on real life application....genuine vlog ..it was worth my time...thank you
NOTE: I feel obliged to update people visiting this video far in the future: I don't wear the MVMT watch anymore, I bought a Nokia Steel HR and only have step tracking enabled. I like the analog look and feel with a tiny bit of smart stuff. It's unobtrusive and has been a great investment. Been really enjoying the recommendations of watches. Let me know if you have any that you really like you think I should check out. (People seem to feel strongly about all this 😂 )
Cory Miller check out seiko 5 watches , there are many different models, they're automatic watches (not sure if all of them are but mine is) so as long as you wear them no charging needed, and can be found for as 'low' as $100 which is in my opinion a great entry into good quality watches, great price for what you get, seiko is a really good brand, just check them out if you feel like it :)
Cory Miller i've noticed that too! i'm stilla novice in the watch world myself, my seiko should arrive soon :) and whatever you end up getting, good luck with it!
Citizen eco-drive. You will never have to worry about battery changes with them. Powered by light, be it artificial or natural, they will always have power on them plus they have a 5 month power reserve (at least, some go as high as 5 years). Plus they have really good built quality and finnishing. The best watch for the money if you are not into mechanical watches.
I still think a mechanical needs a bit of passion on the topic to be justified. So here are some hi end quartz. Seiko Dolce 33.5mm, Certina DS-2 precidrive, Bulova Moonwatch, Bulova Accutron. Going up with prices any Grand Seiko quartz model, Breitling Aerospace, Omega Aquaterra quartz. Enjoy.
I have a Iwatch series 4, and I think it’s great. Water proof, I’ve banged it a few times by accident on hard surfaces no scratches dents nothing. I bath with it. Been swimming and all with it. And it still works great. Left my phone home a couple of time and didn’t need to get it because I had my watch. I’m watching this video to see why I need a g shock. Really only thinking of using one when shit hits the fan honestly.
I bought into the hype and bought an Apple Watch 5, when it was new. Had it about 6 months, and switched back to regular watches. Never had a desire to go back to the Apple watches.
I have a Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave. It tells me the time and date, has a stopwatch and an alarm loud enough to wake me in the morning. It charges in daylight, so never needs a charger or new battery, and it syncs with GPS satellites every day, automatically adjusting the time zone depending on where I am in the world (my job involves constant travel). I also have an iPhone 6S Plus and Sennheiser earbuds with inline controls. That will do it for me. EDIT 04/06/18: Crow-eating time. I kept my lovely Titanium/Sapphire Eco-Drive as a dress watch, but I did get a Series 3 Aluminium Apple Watch. I'm finding the health apps addictive (good), and I was an addictive phone-taker-outer: it's so much easier to glance down and think (unimportant/important).. And the timezone switch on landing is so quick: I turn my phone on and a few seconds later they change timezone. I wouldn't take it to a job interview or board meeting, though.
Great insights about this Cory. I've been back and forth on using mine as well. There are good aspects but I got so tired of charging it all the time for very little return on my effort.
That was a huge thing for me, having to maintain the "upkeep" of it so to speak when I was hardly using it for anything beyond what my other devices could already do.
3:58 tbh you dont have to do this with the apple watch either. if you dont bring a cable with you the watch will just go in power reserve mode and will still, just like your regular watch, tell the time. You only need a cable if you care about those smart features that the regular watch isnt capable of at all
Cory from 2024 here:
Another year, another batch of wonderful (and passionate) viewers and commenters continue to spin by the video.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 xD its a useful tool even though its an ugly watch
Casio G-Shock 5600UE and Casio F-91W
Rocking the Torgoen Saphire T9 quartz with 316 stainless steel
This saved me from an unnecessary purchase. Thanks for your honesty!
Absolutely!! Thank u.
Same dude.. I was thinking about to get one and I searched something like "Why people still prefer traditional watch over smart watch" and this video recommended on Google.. and Bam !!
correct.
There really is a certain magic to looking at the sweep of a second hand on a mechanical watch, knowing that there’s a huge amount of cogs and springs underneath the dial working in perfect harmony. It’s lovey to look down at your wrist and have that break from the digital world!
Yep. That's how come I wear a sundial watch

Took that walk by the way......... I looked at street lights and building lights and cars. It was an ok walk tho

Best comment i read for years! It resonates with what i am thinking about all of this
It's great that you noticed it. It's the little, physical details that fill our life. Those give a little pause and a gushing confort to use.
The closest "smart" thing that gave me a similar joy was an e-book. It's the simpler things, that we really enjoy.
"There wasnt actually a real reason for me to buy one". Quote: Everyone who bought a smartwatch.
@@eatcheesekobe absolute rubbish !!!! Shows how much you suck at your work .
If I’m with a patient doing something I need to remember to tell the nurse what is happening and I don’t have time to chart it I can just
Tell siri to make a note of it and then I can check it when giving report.
Cory from 2022 here:
I have the same Apple Watch that I've had since 2019, but at one point it ran out of battery and I just forgot to charge it and put it on again 😂 I picked up a nice chrono watch here in Austria that I really like, I really love how I don't have to charge it all the time 😂

I got myself a solar powered gshock and never going back to any other gimmicky smartwatches.
Solar powered GShock for the win here too ! And that's it .
I totally agree with you. Technology is really became an addiction and it's making us less social.

As is tradition, I'm continuing to update on my life-long progress to milk this video and comment section as much as possible. I've been wearing a simple Seiko for the last year and a bit, and it's on almost constantly. I haven't missed the Apple Watch one second. My watch continues to be just that: a watch.
Please continue to be kind in the comments. What watch are you wearing in 2023?
thank u for the update ;)
I now use Apple Pay on my watch and it is sooooo convenient and fast. There is no need to pull out a phone or wallet. Pay straight from your arm!!! 😀
Thanks Cory for the update... In my daily basis I wear Citizen Castalia, Seiko Field, and a Vintage Seiko Diver Watch
I dropped the iwatch and fitbit and just back to a gshock. I dont miss all the charging. Now im solar.

I just gave him a look that says, "what are you, 5?"
That customer's $300+ wrist computer will eventually turn into a wearable paperweight as soon as the battery dies out and/or Apple stops providing updates for it, whichever comes first. And I've used Apple products long enough to know their stance on third-party or user-initiated repairs.
Meanwhile, with a simple battery change (after 3-4 years of service) my Timex, as their old slogan goes, will take a licking and keep on ticking.
Im quitting wearing samsung Smartwatch, gping back to regular watches. My top choice the the Casio Gshocks
Well, scratches and dust will force you to buy a new one eventually :)
It will not be long before someone comes out with a solar/self charging smart watch.
💙Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate you.
Thank you!
Charging my watch everyday became ridiculous. I am back to Casio with a 10 years battery.
I'm happy with my Omega seamaster diver. Even if someone gave me 10 apple watches, I still wouldn't give a damn
😊😊😊
I agree with you
Why do you need a tiny unreliable screen on your hand while you already have a smartphone in your bucket?
I sold my Samsung Gear S3 frontier after two weeks of using it. I knew that watch wouldn't survive my abusive life style 😂
Instead, I got an indistrcutable Casio G shock Mudman
Totally agree with you. I got an Apple Watch and hardly wear it. What’s the point when in a year it goes out of fashion. I use my normal analog watch it never needs charging just put it on a go!
I appreciate the honestly of the video and how you titled it "why I switched" instead of something like why you should switch.
Totally agree man, having a mini phone on your wrist is not a way to live for me, I got 2 Tissot & 1 Citizen watches both mechanical its a fun hobby
Great comment. I agree
Get a real watch from a good watch brand those mvmt watches are trash, consider buying a seiko!
This is what I'm hearing 😂
rascal king great into, thanks!
JaCk
Hell, even a Timex would be a better choice than mvmt
Totally true

I have my good old trusty seiko diver kinetic I wear most of the time and a garmin watch I wear when I go for a jog. Sometimes I get out the door for a jog before I realise I have not changed my watch and dont bother going to get the garmin because it's probably flat anyway. I tried wearing the garmin full time but got sick of it going flat.
Glad to find someone who knows what they actually want , instead of trend telling them .
I bought Samsung watch 4 last year and don't give much attention to it for the same reasons. Very honest video. Subbed.
I totally agree with this video! Thank you for making it. Still relevant 7 years ago.
As amazing as the technology and aesthetics of Apple Watches are, he hits all the reasons why I won’t get one. I wear a regular watch that tells time. When I need to look at my phone, I look at my phone (& I’ve been trying to do that less, not more).
Happy with my Casio. Don't need to charge it regularly and it serves its inherent purpose flawlessly: to show the time and date.
The task of a watch is to keep time, that's it, no need to be fancy and so technical, that's what your phone is for.
it depends. People like smart watches that keep track of their time, health, records in runs, etc.
Some people like simple things just because it's neat, while others are messy or organized and very complicated.
Thank you for reminding me that I don't need too much tech. Happily going strong with my family of Citizen watches.
honestly I would take my Citizen, G-shock, or proTrek, over any smart watch, I know they do a ton of stuff, but like with my Citizen, it feels like class on my wrist, perfect everyday field watch, my G-shock, has been with me forever, and never needs adjusting , and my proTrek, is what I were for work as a survival instructor, or any of them.
I feel we are rapidly going down a hole, where we feel we have to keep up with this never ending awesome tech, but at the same time we are losing so much, all my watches are solar, so I never have to worry about the battery, not for 15 years at least with each unit.
Out of all of those watches, which do you recommend the most?
Arghhhhh
Me too, switch from smart watch to Solar G Shock.
Yeees thank you
I Was thinking of buying a fit band or a smart watch but I want to be able to miss notifications.. enjoy my life.
Thank You 🙏🏽 for posting this video, now it’s crystal clear.
Here in 2020....i feel the same way brother! Just bought 3 G shocks for the price of my galaxy watch lol. I hated that you had to have it charged and I was way too wrapped up into it!
Its true. Smartwatch just trend. But its just watch i need.
Are you still wearing a regular watch instead of the Apple Watch? For me it’s kind of annoying having to charge a watch. I recently purchased a Citizen Eco Drive women’s watch since you don’t need to change the battery (it charges with light) and I’m actually quite happy with it!
Most realistic most unbiased...non fanboy shit ...no sheep of the herd...hats off...love people who speak about anything based on real life application....genuine vlog ..it was worth my time...thank you
I recommend solar atomic G-Shock Square if you are looking to switch. You don’t have to worry about batteries or even setting the time.
I feel ya man I’m trying to disconnect as much as possible
I love my apple watch. I can't wait to get an Ultra this fall.
Heil_Helix Thanks for the recommendation! Seeing a lot of love for Seiko 5 in the comments.
Same. I moved from an apple watch to a 30 dollar casio. just tell me the time and don't make me charge anything. lol.
Analog watches are best. Watches are made just for checking time. Smartwatches are just a distracting material. You have iphone for all those tasks.
Honest opinion finally the video I’ve been looking for !!!!! Kill the hype !!!! ThAnkyou
My EDC watch is a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. It's wound by hand.
Fred Calabrese nice watch , i have a glycine sst 12 , also automatic
Seiko for me, automatics have charm, and connection that you made with your watch, your watch grow as you grow

tbh you dont have to do this with the apple watch either. if you dont bring a cable with you the watch will just go in power reserve mode and will still, just like your regular watch, tell the time. You only need a cable if you care about those smart features that the regular watch isnt capable of at all
