The description of the crash which killed Paul Mantz is utterly wrong. "The landing skid, a fragile part of the pieced together aircraft, caught on the rough ground ...." . The landing skids did not cause the accident. It is clear from the video that the aircraft fuselage broke in two before the front of the fuselage tipped forward burying the skids in the sand. Watch from 3:21 . The initial landing was hard with no apparent suspension to soften the impact. That loading snapped the fuselage in two (inertia of tail) which caused the front to pitch forward once the stabilizing downward load on the tailplane was removed. Very bad design. It needed to look "makeshift" but still function as an aircraft.
