Canada means "the village" because it was colonially rewritten from the Indigenous term, "Kanata" which literally means "village". There's actually a town called Kanata in the Ottawa suburbs and that's how the colonial name "Canada" came into existence.
I wonder if it's a similar situation to how the UK ended up with 4 rivers literally named "River River", since when the Roman Empire invaded and started making maps (because they were so big on map making), they pointed at a river and asked "what's that called?" and the native UK people went "uhh... a river?" and the Romans just nodded and wrote down "River River" Or at least that's the story I've heard. So like the Europeans came to Canada and asked "what's this place called?" and the natives just said "this is a village" and the Europeans nodded and wrote that.
5:24 One of the reasons why the poster used Bananas might be the fact that a popular meme on the Internet has "Banana for scale" when measuring/comparing things
7:10 Does Jack really not notice the fact that Germany controls both Austria and Czechia on this map? And does he really think that France and the uk controlled most of Africa in the 80s???
Belgian here! I can see how compulsory voting might be seen as annoying, and to be fair I would be annoyed too, but I've got to say they really make it super easy. You get your voting stub in the mail automatically (you don't have to register) , which tells you where to go (it's usually not farther away than a few kilometers from where you live, especially in highly populate areas and most of BE is highly populated/urbanized) and on what day. It's always on a weekend and organized in schools or sports halls etc. For me it is 2 mins away by foot lol so I do it on my way to the bakery in the morning. You can choose at what time to go, and depending on that you might wait 5 minutes up to 30 mins. Longest I've personally had to wait to cast my vote was 10 mins lol, but then again I always go early in the morning to avoid the crowds; It's super easy. If you can't go because you're on holiday/sick/... you can easily get another person to cast your vote for you, but then you do have to go to city hall to ask for it. If it weren't organized as well I would be annoyed that it was compulsory I think, but still vote, it's such a privilege to have that right!
None of that requires compulsory voting to be done. Litterally the exact same procedures for voting here in Denmark, yet voting is not compulsory (so yes we get the voting card in our mail too, but we are free to throw it in the thrash if we want) At the same time as far as I am aware, Denmark generally has one of the highest amount of turn-up for voting. So if anything I would say a country did something very wrong, if they need to enforce compulsory voting, to get enough people to actually vote
@@GummieI Oh I'm not denying that, I was just wanting to show that if it were not as easy as it is I would be much more annoyed by compulsory voting, especially with a system like in the US.
In Iceland we traditionally take the father’s first name and then add son/son or dóttir/daughter at the end, so for example, Jóhannsdóttir would be translated to Johanns daughter or the daughter of Johann. We also do take the mother’s first name if the father wasn’t in the picture we the baby was born

@0:54 actually the Mercator projection gives you a good idea how far all the land is from one another. It stretches out at the top and bottom because the Earth is globe. On the map you're looking at the continents are accurate sizes but the oceans are stretched to compensate
Hey Jack, I have a video idea for you. I recently bought a few flags off of temu and I thought it would be cool if you did the same and made a video about it. I bought a USA, UK, and Germany one and they are all good quality for the 2 dollars I spent on them. I hope you see this and I love your videos.
7:48 At some unknown time, the Uralic-speaking peoples migrated from Central Asia into Europe, modern day Hungary and Scandinavia, which explains why Finland and Hungary are the only countries that do this while every else does forename then surname.
3:57 To be a bit more accurate, the Finland one seems to be based on the Finnish name of Finland (Suomi), not the foreign name "Finland" which has a different etymology. Although both of those words have somewhat uncertain etymologies actually. "Land" is the most likely theory we have currently for "Suomi" but it could be something else too
2:46 Damn, South and North Korea, Japan, Liberia, and Thailand have never been colonized by Europe? Whoa, I bet Europe regrets not colonizing these five countries looool
3:04 this is because when asked for what the name of their country was, the first nations responded "canada," they were just inviting the europeans to their village, but it was mistook as the name of the land and it stuck.
That Þýskaland Þ is an old letter called Thorn that makes a TH sound still used in Icelandic that used to be used in a lot of languages like old English, it was derived from the rune of the same name, so that would be “th-ee-ska-Lond” I believe.
Canada is called the village because when settlers first came here and met the native people of Mi'kma'ki the people called the land kanada refering to their village but the settlers thought that was the name of the country. fascinating
I do feel voting should be compulsory, with all the possible ways to make voting easier. (national holiday where everything is closed at least half the day, mail-in ballots sent to all possible voters, absolutely no restriction on voting other than requiring proof of citizenship, etc) In the US, even though we are seen as rather politically charged (especially because of our "us vs them" two party system that only grows animosity), there is only 50-60% turnout in presidential election years and 40% or less for midterm election years.
In Australia we have compulsory voting and I think that’s a good thing because that means everyone has a say and everyone has to have a say. Also sausage sizzles.
