      The $49.95 SVP lock on was already finished in january of 1994, along with four games. But a chip shortage probably would have forced SEGA to switch to the SuperH. Still, the Sega CD+SVP (and extra 256KB of RAM) would've kept Sega at the head of the market until 1996.

      Speaking of untapped potential, it's a shame nobody's working in wireframe.
      Just look at Star Wars on the X68000, and imagine that kind of engine handling a Wipe-Out style racing game, or an FPS style approach to Dungeons of Daggeroth.
      You could get amazing results if you sacrifice everything else for performance.

    Clarification regarding the new game by the Arkagis Dev (plutiedev). He's looking to add acceleration via the Sega CD Sub CPU in the cart edition of the game. This hasn't yet been confirmed as a definite feature.

      So that means that the MD & SCD can work in tandem? Let's say, a game relesed via cartridge can use both MD and SCD processors, together? Well, that would indeed be BLAST PROCESSING :-) - I once read that games released for the sega cd could also use the MD's processor....That'd be a total of 20.1mhz!

    • @RetroSegaDev
      @RetroSegaDev  3 года назад +2

      Using both CPUs together isn't an easy feat and comes with a bunch of complexities. I'm not sure what the plan is with this PlutieDev may just be using the MCD CPU instead of the MD CPU via a cart game. I guess we won't know unless PlutieDev decides to use it 🙂

  • @AlexvrbX

    SVP Virtua Fighter would be a neat showcase. The Genesis hardware can handle everything but the fighters themselves, even a little mode 7-esque action is possible on a stock Genesis.

    • @maroon9273
      @maroon9273 3 года назад +2

      Also, star wars arcade, wing war, doom (sega cd svp), zaxxon motherbase 2000, stellar assault, knuckles chaotic and the cancelled virtua hamster. Also, a cut down version of Daytona and virtual fighter 2.

    • @AlexvrbX
      @AlexvrbX 3 года назад

      @@maroon9273 The SVP is only really good for pushing flat (untextured) polys. It's the chip that was in Virtua Racing for the Genesis. So SOME of the games you mentioned would be good candidates, and some would not. For example anything 2D is a no-go, and Doom would also not be good, due to the lack of texturing.
      In the case of Doom though I know you mentioned the Sega CD... there's no SVP in the Sega CD, maybe you meant the ASIC chip? You could absolutely use the Sega CD to handle certain things - all the sprite scaling could be done on the ASIC, CD music, and the extra grunt from the second 68K plus a bunch of RAM. If you made it a combo cart/CD game I think it's doable in a cut-down fashion even with the limited RAM. But the SVP is useless for Doom unless you want Doom to be a bunch of blocky flat polys like Virtua Racing and use a custom engine.

    As someone who has faithfully modified the whole stack (Mega CD 32x!), it's a shame that the 32x and Mega CD didn't get much love officially.
    Brought here by google, this was a great insight to the future of the MD Homebrew Scene and I am totally looking forward to it!
    I can only hope that in the future, people start tinkering with the idea of proper Mega CD 32x usage.
    If we can achieve great 3d rendering with the 32x on it's own, imaging what having the extra power of the Mega CD bulked on top of MD + 32x could do in theory!
    Gotta say though, I certainly don't envy anyone attempting such a challenge on one of the addons, yet alone both at once. Spaghetti junction I presume.

    Imagine if there were Sega CD games that used the svp chip.

    • @AlexvrbX
      @AlexvrbX 3 года назад +2

      I'd settle for more Sega CD games that actually taxed the Sega CD's faster 68K, as well as specialized ASIC... let alone used them well (and in tandem with the Genesis' own capabilities). There were a good few, of course... but a lot of the SCD titles were FMV games or games that are basically Genesis titles with a CD audio soundtrack.
      The SVP aside, I have often felt that even a standard cart could have been used to accelerate loading of common assets for the Sega CD. For example in an RPG like Lunar, you could store most battlefield assets and other common sprites to massively reduce the time needed to hop into or out of fights.

    • @madhatter8508
      @madhatter8508 2 года назад +2

      I'd rather see CD 32X games. I think it could handle a basic car combat game like Twisted Metal, or a simple texture mapped racing game like Ridge Racer. I don't think it could handle an arcade-accurate port of Daytona USA. Would it be feasible to use it somewhat like a Saturn, where the Sega CD renders the floors as textured bitmaps and the 32X draws polygonal objects on top of it? If I am correct, which I'm probably not, the Sega CD 68K can run game code, the Genesis CPU can handle the DMA to VRAM, the ASIC can render the floors, and maybe both 32X CPUs can draw texture mapped polygons over the Genesis/CD background layers. Both CPUs working together (if they can) should be able to draw texture mapped, gourad shaded polygons comparable to the performance of the 3DO.

    Imagine if the 3D demo used both chips of the 32x. Wonder if it would get a speed boost. But yeah, it is interesting the architecture of both the 32X and Saturn, they used chips from a similar family but as a result also made both systems difficult to program for.

      The machine offered extra sound and an extra layer of graphics. The graphics layer was drawn by the 32x and could appear above or below graphics output of the Mega Drive. You could ignore the Mega Drive graphics totally and render everything via the 32x layer. You wouldn't see Tomb Raider ported as it hasn't got the RAM to handle it but something Starfox looking is possible as it works to the systems strengths.
