It is in the movies. In the first movie they didn’t show the ship sinking because the producer said it didn’t look good. They made a sequel called beyond the Poseidon adventure where a group of fortune hunters visit the Poseidon in search for treasure. At the end of the sequel the ship explodes as shown in this animation.

Great remake animation, man. But I much prefer the ship to sink peacefully like in the novel, rather than exploding like in the ill-sequel.

they shot it but Irwin Allen thought it looked fake and didn't want to reshoot
On top of that studios wanted a sequel so Paul made a sequel but intentionally made it so bad.
