For the people saying that it's the queen mary/looks like the queen mary, the movie was inspired by one incident the queen mary had with a rouge wave and listed 52 degrees. This movie is basically what would happen if she listed more or if the wave was more violent.
Wasnt that event accured when she was in WW2? And i think she listed about 53 degrees, but still, most ships that had a another identicle ship at that time were called "sisters"
This movie is basically based on one of the queen Mary's journeys to the British isles from America the ship itself was carrying onboard over 16,000 soldiers and crew. And she was struck by a rouge wave during a storm she listed about 50 degrees to starboard. But thankfully returned to a even keel it's believed had she listed a mere few more degrees she would have more than likely capsized resulting in the largest loss of life in maritime history.
in fact, it occurred to the author to make this film when he sailed on Queen Mary, and a wave covered her by 50 degrees, it’s good that he didn’t roll over like Poseidon, that’s how it was
Your are right this is the queen Mary it was used in the beginning open scenes when the ship capsized they used a large scale model for the under water scenes
The ship did NOT "sink". It only capsized. At the movie's end, a hole is cut into the bottom keel. Which is above water. And survivors pop out. Dry. This brief clip shows the end.
@@davidgmaloof Sorry, my mistake. That sequel starred, as I "recall", Telly Savalas. It was so poor, and forgettable, by contrast, it completely slipped my mind !
@@davidgmaloof and actually the ship didn't shink at the end of Beyond, it blew up. The ship actually DID sink at the end of the book, but Gallico planned a sequel of sorts with Rogo and Rosen returning to the wereckage, to do what I can't imagine. Don't see how that could be a book sequel if the ship sank at the end of the first book, so maybe he wanted it to be the plot to Beyond.
I remember this movie when it came out. It was one of the first disaster movies, and Irwin Allen was in the thick of the trend. The model was pretty small and the miniature scenes don't really hold up.
We all going to play "Queen Mary, but it didn't sink, it capsized" trivia, then I'll offer some up from the book. Roddy McDowell refers to an area called Broadway by the crew. In the book, this is where they lost Robin (Eric Shea) due to the lights going out and deranged passengers panicking. He never appeared again. Susan (Pamela Sue Martin) was raped by a young crewman as she searched for her brother. This was the late sixties hippie era, people. After the young crewman fled, Susan thought at the end of the book how she hoped she was pregnant and she could go to the young man's parents in Ireland, . . . . yea, yea, yea. Linda (Stella Stevens) was the book's antagonist. Very mean woman, hence the bits of dialogue from her in this movie, but then Stevens tried to make Linda a caring person as well. In the movie, they died Belle, Linda and the Preacher. In the book, it was Linda, the Preacher and Belle, who died just before they got the hull opened. Few more survivors Robin and Susan's parents were there, another businessman sort, two party characters who drank all the time called Pamela Reid and the Beamer, who were seperated from them but were rescued later on. Everyone had to strip down to their undies and were coated in oil when they were rescued. Again, it was the hippie era, so each character had to have his life and achievements berated. Acres (Roddy McDowell) didn't join them, so they picked up a Turkish stoker called Kemal. He couldn't speak a lot of English, so they had to berate him for themselves. Yea, the movie cut away a lot of excess. A little woman called Miss Kinsale said she was engaged to Rev. Scott, but only after he had died. No one really believed her. Carol Lynley, about the same here, hooked up with Red Buttons.
I love this movie, but always felt the ships loss was the result of poor seamanship. They knew it was an earthquake, the officers even discuss how mountainous "it" was ...meaning they know what it is and yet doesn't turn into it until he sees it at the last minute. 🤷♂️
basically some Greek company took the Queen Mary and turned it to a cruise ship instead of being a hotel, but due to her age, the Greek cruise line sold her to scrap in 1972 but instead got turned over by a wave
his name was eric shea. he starred in some tv and disney movies. he was the girl's (carol Linley's)younger brother, I can't remember what he was doing in that scene it was many, many years ago. In the movie he lived, but in the book he died, if I remember correctly.
Cruise ships go on routes far away from waves for maximum comfort for passengers, if such event's happened, realistically, a cruise ship would roll back right side up with a minor list/tilt.
If you can't appreciate modern music then maybe you shouldn't be listening to music itself, you might hate music but don't call it horrible, that's just way too far.
it was based on accounts of the real ship "Queen Marry" (which actually still exists today in California) and her heavy listing, the author of the original book was inspired by one time when he was on it, a huge rouge wave hit the ship and it listed about 52 degrees, the book and film are basically that but more severe
@@Ice-cream-vans-of-Northolt no, capsized means when a ship either falls on her side, (90 degrees) or she completley tips over (180 degrees) and after that she was fine
Irwin Allen could make convincing disaster movies, this is one of his best.

Paul Galico wrote the book that the movie is based on.
they made quite a nice model for this movie
In the oroginal movie: they gets rescued easily
In The 2006 reboot: they gets rescued after almost a whole week

This looks 1000 times more realistic than all the CGI crap we have to endure these days ...
Not all cgi is bad but a really good portion is
Pretty sure the movie used a irl model
maybe that’s because it’s not cgi
