Lauri Volpi and Callas... the last glorious breath of an art long dead. And I bet Serafin gave that trumpet hell during rehearsals. Listen to that precision. Quite unusual for Naples.
Another excellent cast! The baritone is Paolo Silveri, let's not forget that this man sang Verdi's Otello - a role that many TENORS butchered and he, a baritone, sang it with great success. Amazing!
@@LohengrinO The only tenor ever to ever do so... And at 60, to obliterate Callas at her most colossal vocal (and physical lol) state... Lauri-Volpi was also a personal mentor to Corelli, and the latter claimed he could've never sang like he did without Lauri-Volpi's guidance...
Lauri Volpi the teacher of Franco Corelli! What an emence voice! And he preserved it for many years...amazing tenor one of the titans of la Lyrica!! As for La Divina there are not enough words to describe her interpreting skills.
As one legend exits, another enters. It is very interesting to hear these two singing together, Lauri-Volpi at near 60, Maria at 28. It is a testament to both to have been singing at this caliber at their respective ages. Paolo Silveri also sings well. The Db5/6 is a real thrill!
@@LohengrinO this is from the famous performance at the San Carlo di Napoli in January 1951 under Serafin. Excellent cast (Paolo Silveri as Luna and Chloe Elmo is Azucena). Lauri-Volpi is a colossus at age 59, sustained high C for "Di quella Pira" and all. Then Maria will sing her famous Act 4 Lament like a goddess, with long spun phrases, delicate trills and that violent high D-flat which comes without warning, in a somewhat more refined interpretation compared to the red-hot abandon one hears in Mexico City the previous summer. This live recording is very highly recommended. Personally one of my favorites, along with the 1962 Salzburg Corelli/Price/Bastianini/Simionato under Karajan, what do you think dear Lohengrin?
@@philipc67 fully agree but have u heard the boos after Volpi's Di quella pira? very unjust... also I personally never liked Price's Leonora although she did sing the role better than 95% of the rest of the Leonoras
Una tra le esecuzioni più trascinanti che si siano mai sentite. Qui le fiamme del Trovatore si sentono realmente. Questi sono cantanti verdiani! Questo è VERDI!!!!!
I consider this to be the best live Trovatore.. just like the mexican Aida of 51 was the best and the Traviata of 55 and the Balo of 57 and the Poliuto of 60... i guess it had to do with Maria firing up the rest of the cast too, but also the maestri and the others involved in Scala productions back then!
Honestly? I wouldnt even start to imagine how it would have felt being in one of the audience and watvhing this... I think I would die, happily and go directly to heaven....

Lauri-Volpi faced stiff competition from a remarkable crop of rival tenors including Beniamino Gigli, Giovanni Martinelli, Aureliano Pertile, Francesco Merli, Galliano Masini, Tito Schipa, Antonio Cortis, etc. They were no match for him in several respects, particulary in heroic roles. La Divina is La Divina.

@@LohengrinO Italian audiences are driven by emotion. And i fully support booing singers off the stage if they cannot do justice to the part IN AN OPERA. If more people did that, it would compell singers like Netrebko to go back home and study more. As for this great man, he is phenomenal in this particular excerpt. Callas was never cruel to her peers, except when she needed to. She's not in full God mode here, but she's not holding back, either. Each one would be a form of cruelty.
