Review of Crystal Journals: Pharaoh’s Tomb
I read Rosemary Ludlow’s first book A Rare Gift, the first of the series last year and was impressed and delighted by the interesting characters and the nice, clean well written prose. I enjoyed this second of the series, Pharaoh’s Tomb every bit as much. Rosemary Ludlow has once again written a riveting book in the further adventures of Susan Sinclair, a gusty, brash girl who is given a crystal which propels her into travels back in time.
This time the magic crystal takes Susan to Egypt where the fun continues.
I have been fascinated by ancient Egypt since grade school and I loved this book not just for the finely drawn characters but also for the delicious tidbits of history of ancient Egypt―youth braids , how tombs were ‘booby trapped’ to discourage theft, papyrus boats, scrolls, and ornate jewelry. Pharaoh’s Tomb is well researched and contains a number of intriguing details about the culture and society of ancient Egypt.
The climax is dramatic and satisfying; the denouement shows Susan’s gentle and compassionate nature.
I especially enjoyed how Susan learned to speak ancient Egyptian- a nasty potion is forced down her throat. If only such a potion really existed! I would be first in line, no matter how nasty it tasted. No more tiresome study of the subjunctive and irregular verbs.
I was glad to read that the author is working on three more books in the series. Keep them coming, Rosemary!

In this book Susan travels back in time to ancient Egypt and the creation of the crystals. She is adopted by an evil magician. Eventually, she makes friends with the grand vizier's son,
but is instantly despised by Neferure, daughter of the ruler.
I appreciate Ludlow's ability to entertain and educate me about many aspects of life at that time. The book has plenty of action and suspense.
