    Belmont's Revenge is one of my favorite games in the entire series. It's not talked about nearly enough. I'm in awe of the music especially.

    I feel for how much time went into recreating the GBA look. Great vid, as always, mate!

      Seriously dude, thank you. Recreating this look in PS is an absolute doddle. Achieving the same look on moving frames in Vegas was a real challenge. I'm so happy with how it came out though. Thanks for the comment 😁

    I love this series of Castlevania games! It’s impressive how much they were able to do with the consoles limitations in regards to the art. The shading goes a long way. Great video, Matty! Keep the Castlevania videos coming ❤️

      Diego, thank you man. Completely with you, especially with Belmont's Revenge. They squeezed so much out of that game. I love the Game Boy and am always impressed what clever developers were able to do with those limitations.

    Beat Adventure 1 on Super GameBoy.
    It's not poorly made as many say, but it's EXTREMELY particular.
    Pixel perfect precise timing's so necessary for that 3rd level!
    Oddly enough, I think the C:TA2's one of the easier classic Castlevanias, and a good early entry for new players of the franchise.
    Nice to see some positivity towards these titles. 👍

    Great video mate! I feel like Legends was a few slight tweaks away from being a top CV game - in particular, the spawning enemies bit you mentioned just makes it so frustrating on some of the levels. It's a shame, since some of the other ideas in there are great.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  4 года назад +2

      I completely agree! It's got some great ideas and though it's clearly hampered by the technology, it's a good game. Makes BR all the better though, as Konami learned so much and applied it all to the sequel.

    Man, what a fantastic video. Ever since playing my first Castlevania on the Famicom I have been dying to play more. Luckily, Konami had really quick turnaround times back in the day, so Simon's Quest is something I'm ordering on eBay very soon! But the Gameboy games are something I've been curious about. Especially Belmont's Revenge. But after watching, Legends looks incredible. The boss souls idea is really cool; and it's just interesting to see a slender protagonist and not a beefcake in a Castlevania game lol.
    I have an Analogue Pocket just sitting in the shrink wrap unopened in my closet at home. I've been debating opening it. This makes it tough not to, but I'm still going to hold out for the Analogue OS update and jailbreak to make that decision.
    Anyway, great video, and looking forward to the next one!

      Thanks so much, bud. I saw your livestream pop up, I hope to be able to go back and check that out soon. The Game Boy games really are interesting. They're seriously hard in places, in keeping with the early era of Castlevania games. They're expensive though - Legends will set you back serious money!

    • @HPRshredder
      @HPRshredder 2 года назад

      @@MattyStoked After purchasing a number of older games I consider to be expensive, I really didn't expect to have sticker shock but you weren't joking. The CIB listing on eBay right now ending soonest is sitting at $860. Was it short printed or something? I'll have to look into that. Wow.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  2 года назад +1

      @@HPRshredder The late 1990s was a time when Konami were really unsure about Castlevania. The games had been dipping in popularity, so the N64, PS1 and GB games were all released in lower quantities. Add the fact that by 1997 the Game Boy was nearly 10 years old (the GBC had been announced by then), I imagine a lot of unsold stock ended up getting destroyed.

    great video sir! did the gbc re-releases have many changes made to them at all?

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  4 года назад +2

      Cheers Larry! Another bit I wrote in the script but cut out in the video as I thought nobody would be interested! But yes, there are differences! The re-release of Adventure 1 has a faster base movement speed and adjusted difficulty. It's a more definitive edition of the game and a shame it's not included in the Anniversary Collection. The GBC re-releases were also PAL-only, the Konami GB Collection was still four-colour in Japan. Which is mildly interesting :)

    • @Larry
      @Larry 4 года назад +1

      @@MattyStoked Ah wow, so who went the extra mile and added more colours? Or more likely they accidentally released the beta version in Japan :D

  • @michelegambierazzi

    Didn't Konami remove Castlevania Legends from the canon or did I dream that up somehow?

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  4 года назад +3

      I did originally have this in the script but I cut it out. Koji Igarashi removed Legends from the continuity when he made the official Castlevania timeline. The "true" origin the became the story from Lament of Innocence, the PS2 games from 2003. Legends has never been re-released and physical copies of that game are now crazy money.

    • @kysicilia4848
      @kysicilia4848 3 года назад

      Yes BUT you can still place it after Lament and before CV3 and still don't really contradict canon. Sonic would still technically be the first Belmont to fight Dracula seeing as Dracula isn't... well Dracula until the end of Lament and Leon doesn't fight "Dracula". So 400 years later Sonia is born and the first to come into contact with with. The only thing timeline wise that is wonky is Alucards birth and when Legends takes place. People say it's in 1450 but not even in the manual does it say 1450 it's left ambiguously in the 1400s. Also I don't think Sonia and Alucard had anything but a friendship. She meets him the same night her home is attacked and goes after Dracula that night leaving literally no time for her to have sex with and have Trevor.

    • @Multienderguy37
      @Multienderguy37 Год назад

      @@kysicilia4848 Not really. For one thing it makes Alucard and Maria’s relationship very creepy, considering he will be in his 30’s/40’s and her a teenager. It also contradicts Dracula’s established origin, the beginnings of the sub weapons, and Trevor being the first to kill Dracula.

    Fantastic video. I never got in to Castlevania because I’m a filthy casual but great video none the less. Super interesting to see the graphical changes through the years whilst utilising the same hardware. Great programmers. Sneaky Dracula.

      @@MattyStoked Yeah same. I like zip zap games and robots. Gimme dem robotitties. Just find it hard to get invested in games that are all swords and goblins. I’m a huge fan of lore in games and it’s a shame as the more medieval a game gets it seems the more lore there is. Red Dead Redemption 2 is about as far back as I can go but who doesn’t love being a wicked cowboy?! Got to try the god of war serious at some point though.

    That flickering effect around 8:40 is an emulator thing. It's not present in the original game.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  6 месяцев назад +1

      The flickering _is_ present in the original game. It's that the refresh rate of the screen can't pick it up. It's a trick to make it appear that the GB supports translucency and a wider range of colours. It's a clever trick, but it's not a glitch :D

    • @NinjaContravaniaManX
      @NinjaContravaniaManX 6 месяцев назад

      @@MattyStoked You don't see any background flickering on original hardware. Yes, maybe it's present, but so fast that you can't see it. I know cause I played on original GB and multiple emulators and on each one of them, it flickers like crazy.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@NinjaContravaniaManX @NinjaContravaniaManX yeah that's what I'm saying lol. The refresh rate of the screen is really slow. So by flickering those elements on and off really quickly, it can make them seem quite ghostly and pale. A similar trick was used for ground shadows in other games at the time. It shows in an emulator because modern screens have massively higher refresh rates, so that trick doesn't work any more. It's a neat trick!

      In truth it aged a lot better than that. Like a lot of games released in the first year of the Game Boy it has its frustrations and limitations. It's certainly very frustrating at times. But with context, I enjoy this game a great deal.

    Legends isn't canon.
    Meaning it's not actually connected to the rest of the series.
    The first Belmont to start fighting vampires was Leon Belmont in the PS2 Castlevania game.
