Harbor Freight 10 Amp Demolition Hammer vs. Ceramic Floor Tile

- Опубликовано: 23 апр 2014
- I need to remove about 130 square ft of ceramic floor tile, and thought that it would take a lot of work using a 5 lb sledge hammer and cold chisel, and I wasn't sure that a Kolbalt brand flooring (remover) scraper would work, so after reading all of the reviews about the Harbor Freight 10 Amp demolition hammer, I figured 160 bucks was a good investment - especially since being a home owner, there will be other opportunities for using this tool later on.

Thank you- I was looking for a video of it in action. I appreciate the time you took to show the contents and the operation.
Worked! Harbor freight has updated the tool according to the sales associate i spoke to, its a Bauer rotary hammer kit. Thanks for the video!
An excellent video! Short, sweet, concise! Thank you!
Well done. I was doing my own bathroom fully tiled on all sides and started with chisel and hammer.... I realised life was too short and hired Makita SDS...for two days....wasted some money as i did the whole lot in under a day.... Saved my health which is priceless - The moral is right tools are worth paying for. Nice video
Thanks for taking the time to make this.
I really appreciate it had to find a demo hammer to show the boss what we needed for tile work
Use of the tool begins at 5:35 ...
God. . . Thank you!
thanks bud
Took way too long to get to the good stuff.
Wow! Getting ready to start replacing ALL the tile in our house. I'm thinking that a demolition hammer is DEFINITELY in my future! Thanks for the vid!
Thank you so much! We have the exact same tile, tools, etc. We are now going to use the cheaper electric one thanks to you.
Nice informative video. That's for taking the time to share.
Thanks for making this video! I'm tearing up some ceramic tile and I think I'll use a demo hammer. Power tools rock!
"You're gonna get a chunk of tile in your eyeball and be posting pictures on redit"🤣
that scraper will work i use em at work and i have to put all 120lbs of my body weight into it also everytime u wack it it is prying it from the thinset or thinset from concrete so whole tile is more liable to come up it just takes a few wacks and then the whole piece will come up at once. i found its better to score the mortar joints and pry up the tiles so its an easier clean up. also i have an sds bit specifically made for this job that is offset so it has a slight prying function but mostly remains flat to the floor and it does wonders.
Everyone of these videos stars with "whoever installed this tile didn't do a good job". Lol.... Everyone's a critic.
yeah that makes quick work of those tiles. excellent video.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I am gonna buy one myself
Thanks , really useful video, I am watching it on 2019
By chance I had new heavy post hole crow bar and decided to give it a go and with the weight behind it tiles came off easy and with the length you could stand up and use it.
Yeah I bought a jack hammer $135 buck off line that thing was a beast took out almost 50'x6' concrete slap at 5" some places 6" thick no problems.
Still working good .
Truth.. I'm always using my demo hammer drill from harbor freight .I have beat the hell out of it between jobs for 4 years.
Still works.. one to ten
A9 no bull
I used to be young and tough and didn’t care, now I’m 60, I’ll wear the ear defenders to save what hearing I’ve got left 👍
Don't forget those kneepads!
Nice! Guess I'll be making a trip to Harbor Freight tomorrow : )
Chipping the grout out first makes for a much easier job... This was a fun video to watch.
ruclips.net/video/srIMUfigDyU/видео.html
beside the major mess the tool is pretty handy I see
Would it have been easier to hold the hammer drill inverted so that the angle of the bit would be closer to level?
Thank you thank you! Great video!
Not knocking this method at all; however, I just did the same exact thing with marble tile in my master bathroom....I had an 8 gallon air compressor....went to HF and bought a $10 air hammer and a set of chisels ($8).....Worked just as well...Even if you went to HF and purchased a small compressor for like $50....you'd have saved a ton of money...I initially looked into the demo hammer, but couldn't justify spending $150 on something I'd probably only use for that job.
Thanks! Already have an air compressor and hadn't thought about it.
do you think a handy 120lb female could get it done with the tools you listed? i HATE my tile floors.
Just return it once you’re done at Home Depot and say it wasn’t effective on the job that you’re doing 🤷🏾♂️
nice size and works well so far
Nice vid.....nice review...
I just used the Milwaukee corded not necessarily A Milwaukee fan, but I had 620 square feet of tile from a house made in the 70s I have been doing that for the last three days and holy crap I couldn't do it without it, I do have to say that mortar was very hard to get off at some spots but it saved me so much time,
Milwaukee corded will do the job. Most entry level demo hammers are equal apart from comfortable and durability
If you have $ and want THE best, Hilti makes it. I'm not sure of any retailers that carry Hilti products though so it's all online ordering (for me atleast). But they're THE best. But definitely the most expensive. I've used Every brand power tool and almost every tool and when you use a Hilti you can tell it's premium. Like a Corvette (DeWalt) vs a Porsche (Hilti) Lol ... Corvette will get it done fast, sure. But the Porsche will do it as fast or faster and with comfort and refinementvut the pricetag to go along with with it
What is the color and kind of tile is that that looks like the same color I have and I have to replace some so I would like to match that up
Parabéns, great explication.
Good video thanks
If all the tiles are down well and not loose it is a good canidate for tile over tile. I have saved people alot of money and heartache by doing this. I do skimcoat the original floor with speedset and any high spots i will spend 5 minutes surface grinding them level. An angled schluter strip usually takes care of the higher 3/8" transition with no problem.
The only headache is the future person taking up 2 layers of tiles. That's alot of floor
Do they have a wider chisel? I'm 70 and need to remove pebble tech flooring. My husband is sick and can't help. Do I need to remove the baseboards?
Great video. Look like a good product
Wow, it sure throws a lot of sharp tile bits everywhere, seems fairly precarious for injury:) Might need to throw a small piece of tarp over the area being chopped up. I have tile on concrete on my kitchen floor, seems like a lot of work to pull it up. Thinking about installing some vinyl plank flooring over it instead.
I wonder if a wider chisel tip is available to buy for this tool?
What if you want to save the old tiles?
Yeah, found out last week tool rental is a joke now. Retailers used to loan you a tool if you bought their material (like a wood floor nailer)--saying--Bring it back when done--not anymore. I bought one instead--you can always resell it on the internet, keep original box. You sound like I feel on diy job--after 4 hours--Is it "Happy Hour" yet? I face removing tile in entry hall--3X22. HF is great. Their floor nailer $99 vs $35 a day to rent one elsewhere. Thanks for the demo (Demonstration on tools). My wrist took a beating this past month and objected by swelling--it took 3 days heal. Jamming scrapers or demo bars under material by hand does a number on your wrist (If you are over 60). Nailing nails at 45 degrees in tight places twists your wrist.
Is it possible to remove a few tiles without breaking them, and what tool would you use for that project? Thank you for the film.
I'm using a 75mm tile chisel bit for my current project and even though the tiles were strongly adhered I've found that with a hammer if I firstly chisel a little bit into the grout line all around the tile then the (porcelain 330x330mm) tile will often come up unbroken.
Wants to preserve what's left of his hearing . . . I hear you bro!! (pun intended).
Get the SDS MAX floor scraper bit.
Thanks!
😕, it always amuses when some big shot chimes in DeWalt, or some other professional grade tool and compares it to harbor freight, of course we know that DeWalt is best...if you are making a living using tools such as this then yes absolutely spring for professional grade tools,
but when your a weekend warrior why pop for the X250-super duper soaker when a regular soaker will do you fine, besides harbor freight offers a replacement insurance pretty cheap and so far everything I've bought has done the job for me.
peter8488 dewalt isn't best {but it sure is priced like it}, and its not professional grade. Its home depot consumer grade. Over priced garbage designed to be oversold at big box stores. Fuck Dewalt. There is a better brand for every tool they make, its just not one brand that makes everything. Real professional tool manufactures stick to one genre. You want a track saw? Sure you can buy Dewalt, or spend the extra 100 bucks and get a Festool that actually works. You want good rotary hammer? Call milwaukee or bosch SDS. you won't find many dewalt in the hands of people that chip floors for a living. and for good reason.
For Rotary Hammers, I would go with Bosch, Hilti and Makita. DeWalt and Milwaukee for all my other power tools.
Justin NYC Hilti is nice stuff. The Milwaukee M18 stuff has given me a lot of issue, and the Blue Makitas aren't far behind. This brushless stuff needs some work.
Opinions are a funny thing. I make my living using tools, remodeling, and flipping homes. I have switched just about everything to the Milwaukee M18 Fuel line, and to date, not had one issue with any of them. In their size capabilities, they are far and away the best power tools on the market for daily use.
Hilti is best
I just removed the drywall of the bathtub surround and was contemplating on how to remove the tiles on the floor. I like the tool you are using but I think I will get a Rotary Hammer and use it for somehting else later. Besides I will not be restricted to using chisels and bits just from that manufacturer.
there are some demolition hammers that also do rotary I used a bosch a couple times and it always did it job very well.
N-B, you can get the direct translation OR the rotary action!
Just pulled up 300sf of tile using a Bauer rotary hammer ($69) with a $15 2 or 3inch curved chisel bit. Like butter.
Switch to a curved chisel bit and it will get up under the tiles. I can remove almost entire floors without breaking them
With an air hammer chisel, you can wet down the thinset and minimize the dust.
Got an air hammer from Habor freight for 14 bucks... Removed tile so fast. .. thinset, I hate it so much ..air hammer took care of it too. Phew
Always go with the 4in spade.
Ive been swinging a small sledge at 1100 sq feet of tile for days......I can hit my 70's ceramic with the sledge numerous times without it making a dent its adhered so well to the concrete. the masonry chisel was too thick to get under it easily so I switched and screwed up just one wood chisle on about 900 sq feet of floor it slipped under the tile much easier since it wont break with a smack on the top....the last 200 sq im investing the 160 bucks for this tool. Ive taken a week off and my arms are still dead from all that chiseling never mind the cuts all over me from the flying tile bits....tight floors and a chisel.....wear a welding mask cuz when they pop they explode!
Hope you didn't break a joist
If you don't have a decent air compressor then a rotary hammer works fine, otherwise I would have recommended the Harbor Freight Air Scraper, works faster and you can do it standing up. After that you need a rotary grinder with diamond bit to get all the thinset / vinyl glue up off the floor, preferably one designed for use with shop vacs so you don't have a thick layer of dust coating everything in the house when you're done (no I'm not kidding).
These days (Jan 2016) you can also find electric Chinese 1500W-2800W demolition jack hammers on Amazon, Ebay and other places for $100-$200 depending on accessories, while that would have been overkill here it still would have worked, and if you work outside the spade shovel bit is great for digging holes in rocky/clay soils, chisel and point bits are great for breaking up concrete if, say, you're replacing old fence posts.

I wouldn't use a grinder on the thinset. That would create way too much dust. When I did this, I used an air hammer with a 3" wide blade. Wet the thinset and let it soak before doing it. It cuts down on the dust and softens the thinset. This worked on a 30-year old kitchen tile project. No matter what the approach though, it is tedious work.
good job, lot harder if one has to take up ceramic tile Glued onto Luan (plywood)
It is so true.
Machine has a lot of power but the head its not wide enough, i used a 5inch or so wide head and tiles came of like they were a rug. By the way yes if ur young ur ears will heal in a few hours, the hand u hold the gun w it will hurt the next three days even w gloves, ur knees need cover if u don’t want them to hurt as well, I didn’t wear glasses but I highly recommend it. A lot of sweat and fun
$160 is expensive for Harbor Freight.
Prices have definitely crept up in the last few years.
There's usually a 20% off coupon readily available.
That's what I was thinking.
I just rented a Makita rotary hammer drill for this job, and it cost $70 per day to rent. It’s a better quality tool than this (and a LOT more expensive to buy), but it’s kind of nice to have your own tool no not have to worry about rental time. I would say if you have more than one job where you would use this tool, or a large job that will take at least 2 days of work to pull up, I would buy this for $160. Otherwise, for a one time deal, just rent.
Is this safe to use on tile that's set on plywood on top of the subfloor?
Looks pretty good. I assume this is where you got the idea to get your own. Making think I should do the tile in the front entry.
Kyle Kerley If the tile is set on plywood you can spit on it and it will come off. Even set in mesh it comes up pretty easily, usually in sheets.
Good video... you should wear an appropriate mask for silica dust protection. Very important. That stuff is not good in your lungs. Thanks.
Home Depot sells workers in their parking lot for about $150/day plus lunch
5:30 folks! Thata the time you are looking for.
Thks Good information. Good/Jesus bless you
Isn’t is a bit risky using a sledge hammer as you can accidentally break a floor Joyce?
It's more risky using that power tool. If your angle is to high, that thing is going to put scars on the underlying concrete floor, and it happens very fast. For the mini sledge, I have never seen it hurt the underlying floor... but I do this a lot and my favorite tool is just a hammer and flatbar. Makes cleanup easy and if you break up the grout lines first, you will recover a lot of whole tiles
Good job. Nice info.
Would this device work if the tile is over a wood sub floor?
Did you ever figure this out? looking fro same answer. Thx
Yes it can work *BUT* you'll have to be extra careful about the angle of the tip so that you don't go chisseling into the wood. If you're REALLY worried about chisseling into the wood or not confident with the demo hammer, then rent a proper floor scraper.
Should get a bigger chisel bit will work better
No start at 45 on corner
Looks like it's worth the money
I didn't see any thinset and the tiles came up way too easy. Maybe the installer used Elmer's Glue.
bg147 Mine is probably worse!
bg147 I'm working with laticrete thinset and it is really hard! When I have to do a repair in Custom or Mapei thinset is too easy
It did not look like the backer board was screwed down. I found that getting the screws out was the hardest part.

I have a Hilti TE-74...I have had it for 14 years..used almost daily with no problems.
BUT....I use my tools to make a living with, and this hammer drill new is 1,500.00 more or less.
If you are a DYI guy, go with harbor freight. How often are you going to use this thing? Why spend 1,500.00 on something you are going to use twice in your lifetime?
U should use a wider head works heaps better
Aaron Roberts 5mäp40v
Aaron Roberts Wamba
More do you

Tile coming off pressure from hands not machine
Works fine. The blade should be wider.
This is a good hammer from harbor freight.
hmmm i bet that would do good with rock tile aka Travertine
“Fuck that tile”
-Demo Hammer (Probably)
No goggles though?
I prefer using a hammer and flatbar and can easily take out the tiles whole for the most part. That power tool will add so much time to your job due to the amount of dust that will be scattered through your entire house you're working in. Grab some knee pads and practice. Dust free is the way to be...
Diesel Ramcharger I'm with you but you didn't have to mention no race because I hire people for this type of job and not even spanish and I ended up doing it my self and it came out great and most of my tools are from harbor freight, most of companies out there just for the money and not customer satisfaction
That tile scrapper, you are using it wrong. You will not be able to lift a tile that is wedged in on three sides. That tool works just fine and will pull tile faster than any other option if used properly. It does not take brute force, you need to step back away from the tile and get a good running start at the right anglke, it will pop that tile out with much less effort (and faster) than these other options.
David Rock is
you need knee pads!
I used a air chisel went through like butter
You didn't give the scraper a chance. With a sledge it works great.
Wow
I just realized. That roto hammer is designed for causing maximum damage as fast as possible. Therefore, let’s get a ban assault roto hammers.
You can't kill anyone with this thing from 100 yards. It is not an assault weapon. Stupid comment
There's these things that are fairly cheap called knee pads.
Ik
Young tough guy who was too cool for hearing protection.....who is now going deaf
Dude you're just lucky that tile is not installed right otherwise you would probably be there doing demo...lol...I do this for a living and every single job is different sometimes we are lucky like this guy and sometimes is harder but I have a bosh big hammer and also a makita small and both they do great...by the way if you turn your hammer on the side rather than upright it works way better and faster
Get a much wider chsel for taking out tiles
eso lo hago con un marro y un cinsel ponlo a demoler concreto armado con Barillas de acero ...... para ver la fuerza que tiene porqué la verdad no me convence.....yo me dedico a las instalaciones eléctricas industriales y construcción en general.
20 tiles and u need to replace the tool
You're living in the past.
Part of your problem was not using a proper angle for tearing up that tile with the chisel. Even with the demolishing power tool you weren't using the right angle. Lucky you didn't crack or bust into the slab. I've torn up 12" marble tile using just a carpenter's hammer and flat head screw driver. The scraper would be best used for scraping up any mortar that's left behind.

coooooooooooooooooooool
Looks like a rotary hammer
A wider chisel works better.
Face shield recommended.
Good video, but trusting an electric power tool from Harbor Freight is pretty much like trusting a catholic preist to babysitt young children, something bad will evetually happen, not long ago i removed some tiles from a hallway and a bathroom,i went with air due to confined spaces,an Ingerssoll Rand medium stroke air hammer and my portable air compressor, bit messy but effective.
wow...you are a very funny guy...enjoyed your review a lot
Not true..or only half true. Harbor Freight actually sells some power tools that are pretty good. Yes a lot of garbage too but their rotary drills and demo hammers are pretty decent. The Earthquake brand tools are actually VERY good tools.
Well if you were already fat & rich from your business then get the best and only the best. Unfortunately for the newbies and less wealthy start up has to make do whatever affordable and useful to build their stepping stones for their future toward wealth.
i had the same idea of using my hf air hammer but i guess is too powerful and noisy, so I bought a dewalt 8 amp sds and works like a charm
It’s a harbor freight so no you cant use it for a later project. You will be extremely lucky if it made it through that one project
5:26
Larger chisel.
Makita all the way!👍👍👍
