I have a modest collection of animation production art because it is all so culturally important. I'm glad that Disney themselves are willing to so carefully preserve such a huge amount of work.
Would love to see Glen Keane's clay sculpture of Tarzan da Vinci . It was a 4 ft high clay model of Tarzan without his skin. Glen made it to see how he would move. It's an amazing image. He showed a pic of it 10 years ago at SD Comic Con.
This is absolutely amazing, but for it to truly “inspire” other artists it would need to be shared. Having it locked away from the public is great for preservation but I don’t think you can claim to be inspiring future generations if they never see it. Maybe a digital library where some of this could be viewed would be a great way to share this rich Disney history?
I agree, a digital library would be invaluable! That way the items could still be stored at climate-controlled conditions and preserved properly, but they would actively serve their purpose as a reference and learning tool for future generations of artists. There is so much art that is never seen because it is locked behind industrial walls!
The Walt Disney Family museum does this somewhat, but cuts off around 1966 as it only covers Walt’s lifetime. The good thing is that a lot of the lesser known stuff (even things like Song of the South and the package features) is covered. Many physical books also exist.
Seeing the exposure sheet with camera instructions blew my mind!! What it takes to make animation never ceases to amaze me. Loved this! (Also you can never go wrong with Don Hahn.)

12:35 when is says "Element: Animation" are those the cels? It looks like there are some other boxes stored vertically, which is how I'd expect to find cels in long term storage

"Element: Animation" refers to which element (storyboard, layout, animation, background, cel, etc.) is in that particular box.
