    Charlotte Riddell (1832-1906) who also wrote under the pseudonym F. G. Tafford, was one of the most popular and influential writers of the Victorian period. She was born Charlotte Eliza Lawson Cowan in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland. The author of 56 books, novels and short stories, she was also part owner and editor of the St. James's Magazine, one of the most prestigious literary magazines of the 1860s. She was also the author of many ghost stories, publishing under the name of Mrs. J. H. Riddell. Her husband died in 1880 and Charlotte lived a lonely life thereafter until her she died from cancer in Ashford, Kent, England on 24 September 1906. Amongst her works are: The Moors and the Fens (1858), City and Suburb (1861), George Geith of Fen Court (1864), Above Suspicion (1876), Berna Boyle (1882), Mitre Court (1885) and The Head of the Firm (1892).

    Glad to have stumbled across this reading, it was very good & I appreciate your efforts. I was longing to hear you read more slowly though, I must admit, I feel it would do your skill a lot of richness that might be missed in the tumbling form here-in. Thank you humbly.

      I really value that thank you! Because I read live I'm too conscious of the lateness of the hour and I'm rushing to fit it in a 45 min time - it is why I am taking my time reading war of the worlds. A couple of chapters a week. No rush to finish!

    Somehow the begining of it reminds me of The Bettle!. Same start of a young man...i ll not say more. Just thank you for your naration! Thank you, kind gentleman!

      ​​@@GavCross The Father Brown mysteries are clever great fun. The Man who was Thursday is also a lot of fun. It explains the fundamentals of freedom vs control in an adventure. They are timeless, and your voice is suited to the great English stories. You put me in mind of the poet/professor Malcolm Guite Your fine reading is deserving of the best recording equipment.
      Have you heard Davis Suchet read? Never be afraid of slowing down a tic. You are wonderful at this.
