BG3 deserves to get the acclaim it does just because of the sheer scope, good writing but mostly insane attention to detail when it comes to combat and story decisions and concequences. TOTK is impressive in how much freedom it gives you to problem solve your way through most puzzles, dungeons and a little bit of combat but compared to BG3? There's no way you can compare the two, BG3 has so much going for it, not a single modern game has come close recently that has this much depth and polish. Harman of course is repeating the same talking points as he did when it came to Elden Ring, he's malding cause it's not Nintendo.
I am glad BG3 is making great strides forward for CRPG's because quite honestly, that genre has lagged far behind the Zeldas, Elden Rings, and Xenoblades of the world. I do think peoples perception of it has been inflated though from those lowered expectations. The way Baldur's Gate 3 fanboys like you are claiming it has more depth and polish than Zelda: TotK though, is just laughable. TotK has the most technically ambitious game design I have ever seen and it doesn't have any of the bugs or problems that BG3 has despite how simplistic a turn based CRPG with limited interactivity is compared to it. In terms of story, decisions and how your decisions add consenquences, there hasn't been A SINGLE game in the past 10 years or more where it adds this MUCH depth in how you approach the quests in both side and main quests. TOTK has depth but it only applies to Link's main abilities, it focuses mostly on puzzles and how you traverse the world. As for BG3? Not only you have a party but you can also play co-op, there's DEPTH to every single combat interaction and whatever you can think of, you can probably do based on the party that you have. TOTK's entire depth depends entirely on Link's actions, while with BG3, your entire party can add over 100 ways of taking down every single enemy. Please read what I said again, while TOTK has depth, it only applies to ONE part of it's game. The quest design and the main story are pretty barebone and linear, nothing wrong with that but when you compare it to BG3? It pales in comparison to it.

When you mentioned BG3's "depth and polish" I was thinking more in terms of the traditional video game aspects like environmental interactions and the polish of not releasing in an unfinished state, which although impressive given the complexity of everything that can happen, it still has a decent number of bugs. That's why I interpreted what you were saying the way I did. The only bug I've encountered in Zelda: TotK was a Rito flying in a stationary position with his head poking up directly through the wooden scaffolding in Rito village immediately following the melting of the snow. It had corrected itself the next time I visited the village. BG3 sometimes requires a reload to correct problems. Still a great game though.:)

I love Zelda games, but TotK is a sequel in the LoZ franchise. I never considered it a contender for GotY. Maybe some other award, but GotY should be reserved for industry-defining games. BG3, BotW, GoW, Ocarina of Time, ESV:Skyrim for examples.
I don't think about Nintendo ever. I think he thinks people have an anti Nintendo agenda, but dude no one cares. The Switch is good for what it is, but to make it seem like Nintendo is at the fore-front of gaming is ridiculous in the extreme. It's strange timing but I was actually about to sell my Switch because I haven't turned it on in a year. TOTK looked like BOTW to me and I didn't finish that. So the idea of sending more money to Nintendo for a game I didn't even finish, seemed ridiculous.
All I can say is that you saved yourself $70, game barely felt different. Sure they added sky islands and the depths however they both were undercooked.
My son was super excited about that game. We got it and he played it, he beat it, and he really hasn't picked it up again. Nothing I saw in it made me think game of the year particularly other than the name Zelda. I haven't played BG 3. I loved one and two. I might get it once it comes out on series x. But Starfield is the only thing on my radar right now. If Starfield turns out to be as incredible as it seems then it's probably the only game that actually could be beat Baulder's gate 3 for Game of the year.

roguelites tend to eschew hardline roguelike gameplay elements. Roguelites can lack permadeath. They can also have meta-progression, where the player grows in strength run-over-run.
I loved Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and i personal think its my game of the year but i see no problem with Baldurs gate winning either its an amazing game and well deserve it as well.
BotW already got the GotY. I played both, enjoyed both. I don't think TotK is enough of a different game to warrant another GotY. Absolutely amazing with the machines, but it won't change the industry like GoW, BG3 or even BotW did.
And then the console version was also amazing (speaking as someone who played it on PS5) and my dad is still anticipating the physical release since he doesn't like digital copies of games so lots of people like him will also boost the review score once it's out on physical on consoles.

To be fair to Zelda's user score, that did get hit pretty hard by Ponies getting mad that Spiderman 2 won't get GOTY if Zelda is good. That's why so many of the low scores make no sense, like there's no way you could play the game and say it's a 1-2 if you're not console warring.

About Baldur's Gate's "wokenes"... you can create woman with a dick and male voice as your character, all companion characters are bisexual and actually engage the player character, expressing their feelings to them, there is a flamboyant Astarion character, who is... well... flamboyant. There are plenty of "strong female characters" and "boss babes". But all of that said - the game never MAKES you believe something. This is not activist social justice machine. It does not judge. Wanna kill a flamboyant bisexual? Any time. All characters have their flaws (there are no mary sues). Are there insufferable boss babes? Yeah, sure. But it's just because of their culture, not because they are women. And they don't discriminate based on gender. It's fair. And people who are "woke" can easily find their cup of tea in the game too. The game just melds into something you want of it.

People act as if their personal preference is universal to all human beings. For me for example the excitement for Starfield is even higher than it was for BG3, and I love it (got the DD Edition) by supporting in Early Access. I love this game. But the idea of combining 2 things I love, Sci-Fi and Bethesda games in one game is just overwhelming to me. However... For the Industry it would be much better if BG3 became GOTY. The circumstances under which it was funded and created, the business practices of Larian during EarlyAccess and in the final game are a true shining example of how games should be made, monetarized and distributed. An AA studio sngle-handedly demontrted how to fix modern gaming: Single Player, online- and local coop, 60 bucks, no MT, no subscription, no enforced additional account (Hallo, EA!), no P2W, feature- and content-complete game at launch, Studio took a risk to make the game (backed by the fan community).

Even if BG3 and TOTK were tied in terms of average critic rating, I think BG3 was a clear winner based on the impact it had on the industry alone, it literally scared off developers on twitter for being too good lol, and it was also not a direct sequel like TOTK was, TOTK was basically BOTW+++ while BG3 was a more fresh experience and usually direct sequels don't win GOTY.

Baldur's Gate 3 "wokeness" is in the character creator. Choose pronouns, and its not directly tied to biological body type. So choose female pronoun and select a biological male body type, topless and all with a dick. Those choices would make your character transgender technically. Thats whats being called "woke" in the game.
They just say that to keep people from playing it. It's a very small part of the game and you can even choose you don't want it or no nudity in general in the options.

I love videos like this. Being a Zelda fangirl, I wanted TOTK to win GOTY but realistically I knew Balder's Gate 3 was going to eventually win GOTY. Knowing Larian Studios was a small indie studio in Belgium, I wanted that game to win to prove to the big wigs that just because a studio is small doesn't mean it can release AAA titles. Balder's Gate 3 IS a AAA title in my opinion. And seeing videos like this laughing at the people crying over Balder's Gate 3 winning makes me glad I'm a realistical kind of person.
I basically (minus Koroks) did a 100% playthrough of TotK, I absolutely did 100% Baldur's Gate 3, and I am now 130 hours into Starfield. It's going to be a tough call for GOTY this year, but I would have to give my vote to Zelda. Maybe it's because I have been a huge Zelda fan since the original NES game so I have some nostalgia goggles on, but that was the only game out of the three that got an emotional response out of me. BG3 is the first time a CRPG has managed to hold my attention straight through to the end though, so that is quite the accomplishment. Starfield is great, but it feels more like a refinement and expansion of Fallout 4's game systems than anything really groundbreaking. Zelda, I mean the physics systems alone...

All I can say is that you saved yourself $70, game barely felt different. Sure they added sky islands and the depths however they both were undercooked.
My son was super excited about that game. We got it and he played it, he beat it, and he really hasn't picked it up again. Nothing I saw in it made me think game of the year particularly other than the name Zelda.
I haven't played BG 3. I loved one and two. I might get it once it comes out on series x. But Starfield is the only thing on my radar right now. If Starfield turns out to be as incredible as it seems then it's probably the only game that actually could be beat Baulder's gate 3 for Game of the year.

I care that industry-defining games get featured/nominated at least. BotW was that, but TotK just isn't going to change gaming at all. It implements some cool things, but It doesn't set a new standard. That's what's special about BG3 and The Last of Us and Skyrim. They set new standards and upped the ante. And two of those were already sequels of a kind.

BotW already got the GotY. I played both, enjoyed both. I don't think TotK is enough of a different game to warrant another GotY. Absolutely amazing with the machines, but it won't change the industry like GoW, BG3 or even BotW did.

To be fair to Zelda's user score, that did get hit pretty hard by Ponies getting mad that Spiderman 2 won't get GOTY if Zelda is good. That's why so many of the low scores make no sense, like there's no way you could play the game and say it's a 1-2 if you're not console warring.

About Baldur's Gate's "wokenes"... you can create woman with a dick and male voice as your character, all companion characters are bisexual and actually engage the player character, expressing their feelings to them, there is a flamboyant Astarion character, who is... well... flamboyant. There are plenty of "strong female characters" and "boss babes".
But all of that said - the game never MAKES you believe something. This is not activist social justice machine. It does not judge. Wanna kill a flamboyant bisexual? Any time.
All characters have their flaws (there are no mary sues). Are there insufferable boss babes? Yeah, sure. But it's just because of their culture, not because they are women. And they don't discriminate based on gender. It's fair. And people who are "woke" can easily find their cup of tea in the game too. The game just melds into something you want of it.

People act as if their personal preference is universal to all human beings. For me for example the excitement for Starfield is even higher than it was for BG3, and I love it (got the DD Edition) by supporting in Early Access. I love this game. But the idea of combining 2 things I love, Sci-Fi and Bethesda games in one game is just overwhelming to me. However... For the Industry it would be much better if BG3 became GOTY. The circumstances under which it was funded and created, the business practices of Larian during EarlyAccess and in the final game are a true shining example of how games should be made, monetarized and distributed. An AA studio sngle-handedly demontrted how to fix modern gaming: Single Player, online- and local coop, 60 bucks, no MT, no subscription, no enforced additional account (Hallo, EA!), no P2W, feature- and content-complete game at launch, Studio took a risk to make the game (backed by the fan community).
Am I the only that finds it incredibly comedic that someone who is a “professional author” often ends up using such improper grammar. It’s very telling as to the quality of his work.
I don't get the metacritic wars. I use it to get a general reception of a game and more often than not, it helps just got that.

Even if BG3 and TOTK were tied in terms of average critic rating, I think BG3 was a clear winner based on the impact it had on the industry alone, it literally scared off developers on twitter for being too good lol, and it was also not a direct sequel like TOTK was, TOTK was basically BOTW+++ while BG3 was a more fresh experience and usually direct sequels don't win GOTY.

Good'ol Harmen, never disappoints. But to be fair, for the first week I was some a lot of RUclips comments about how BG3 is a shining example of a "complete game that actually works at launch" that devs like Blizzard should emulate, but I've definitely encountered a number of bugs while playing. Nothing game breaking, but I've had to reload quite a few times.

I love Nintendo, well LoZ. Absolutely favorite game series. However, Nintendo makes a lot of mistakes and invests in really weird gimmicks. They are litigious and addicted to making boutique hardware. Baldur's Gate 3 was a new game. TotK was a sequel. If they were tied, I'd give it to BG3 because it is actually insane compared to any other TTRPG sim. TotK doesn't actually impress above and beyond BotW. It's the same game with a larger map and moderately different gameplay, and that's about it.

What serious gamer actually thinks Metacritic scores or the joke that is The Game Awards actually have anything to do with how good a game actually is, especially when you have so many complete morons reviewing games both professionally and in the user review categories? Yes. Occasionally a game is so popular with real gamers like Zelda BotW and Elden Ring that The Game Awards can't ignore them, much to the chagrin of Geoff Keighley as he seems more interested in promoting big budget shovelware from companies like EA, Activision, Sony, and Ubisoft then something truly good. Did anybody seriously believe a game that doesn't have any appeal outside of hardcore gamers like Doom Eternal, Metroid Dread, or Monster Hunter World would win? Does anybody really think that Assassins Creed Odyssey, Death Stranding, or Last of Us part 2 had any business being on a game of the year list?
Those game will get nominated for GOTY at TGA. TOTK, BG3, FF16, AC6 and STARFIELD. But yeah TOTK might loss to BG3. Or gasp Starfield.

Baldur's Gate 3 "wokeness" is in the character creator. Choose pronouns, and its not directly tied to biological body type. So choose female pronoun and select a biological male body type, topless and all with a dick. Those choices would make your character transgender technically. Thats whats being called "woke" in the game.

I love videos like this. Being a Zelda fangirl, I wanted TOTK to win GOTY but realistically I knew Balder's Gate 3 was going to eventually win GOTY. Knowing Larian Studios was a small indie studio in Belgium, I wanted that game to win to prove to the big wigs that just because a studio is small doesn't mean it can release AAA titles. Balder's Gate 3 IS a AAA title in my opinion. And seeing videos like this laughing at the people crying over Balder's Gate 3 winning makes me glad I'm a realistical kind of person.
I basically (minus Koroks) did a 100% playthrough of TotK, I absolutely did 100% Baldur's Gate 3, and I am now 130 hours into Starfield. It's going to be a tough call for GOTY this year, but I would have to give my vote to Zelda. Maybe it's because I have been a huge Zelda fan since the original NES game so I have some nostalgia goggles on, but that was the only game out of the three that got an emotional response out of me. BG3 is the first time a CRPG has managed to hold my attention straight through to the end though, so that is quite the accomplishment. Starfield is great, but it feels more like a refinement and expansion of Fallout 4's game systems than anything really groundbreaking. Zelda, I mean the physics systems alone...
