  • This is a studio oil painting I did in Ouray, Colorado. In this video, I explain the process of starting with a blank toned panel and execute the painting from a photo on my computer monitor. I explain composition, color mixing, color choices, editing the scene as in what to include and what to leave out.
I also explain the reasoning behind my choices.

I love this! It is fascinating to see how it all comes together and to understand your thought process.

I really like seeing the different techniques and tools you use to bring out the textures in the rocks, dirt, grass, and shrubbery in the foreground. And the contrast in tones between that and the mountains, sky and clouds. But you still bring hints of the warm tones into the mountains, too. Beautiful.

Fascinating! I enjoyed watching the process, having never worked in oil paints. Your handling of the brushes-flat, edge, tip-and the palette knife is interesting too. Thanks for talking us through what you’re thinking as you paint. Great video-and a lovely finished product!
