What a coincidence - you're wearing the Thunderbird Foundation/Maynard Dixon House plein air hat! I was their marketing director 6 years ago & I helped plan that year's Maynard Dixon Campout. I loved seeing your watercolor rigs! I subscribed - I hope you'll keep making videos :)

Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to show us your various set ups! I have just started plein air painting and repurposed an old jewelry to fit my needs for now, but one day I hope to have a grand watercolor set up like yours! Best wishes.

You are most welcome Valerie. I'm currently working on a video show how they are used in the field...or maybe on the street. Stay tuned...

That was a great “tour” of your art supplies! Can’t wait to see the sketches you put into that awesome leather-bound book. What an adventure!!!

Most non-artists don't realize what all we need to make the "magic" happen. I'll post the worthy paintings as they are done, lol.

Joshua Been! He's a nice guy and I really like his paintings. I have one that is a tall rendition of the river near I70. Hope your adventure is going well. Planning a painting trip to CO in August. Thanks for the tips and overview of your gear.

Josh is really prolific and a great guy.
I'v completed one leg of the journey. I was unable to do it all in one take. Too much to take in.
      Thanks for following along.

    Hello Mike…
I caught a glimpse of your video in my feed this morning and decided to check out your video on the Lewis and Clark trail. I was really hoping to see your travels. Any updates? I’d like to travel along. By the way, your videos of the scenes are so professionally done it makes me want to see more. You’re a good storyteller. Poetic. Any chance you could make a few longer videos? Say, 50 minutes or so? Will you be showing us any live painting demo’s? Thanks.

Thank you so much for the kind words Barbara.
I’m up painting/camping for the week and will respond more in depth when I return.

Hi Mike-I just discovered your channel. I’m trying to make an economical easel setup and went to the company you recommended. I have a Richeson palette box. I am going to attach it to a tripod. They’re out of the one you recommended. But I need to mount a canvas. Should I order the upright bar from openbox ? Says it attaches to the tripod. I’m not sure if I completely understand how. Also, what size? I’ll be mostly painting canvases no larger than 18x24. Would I need anything else? Those crossbars I’m sure. Thanks

I'm not familiar with the upright bar you mention. Perhaps ask them.
Another great option for painting large canvases on a portable easel is the one that Josh Been offers at prolificpainter.com Are you familiar with him

@@mikesimpsonart Yes. So the set up Beem uses is what I’m referring to when I say bar. The one model he shows of him sitting in front of his tripod w a small canvas. Notice that Where the canvas is attached to the easel.. it’s actually a vertical bar. What I can’t see is how the vertical is attached to tripod. I feel that if I could get this-I would set my pallet on my arm or a small table. What are your thoughts?

@@barbaraballantine5270 he’s got several videos that show how the combination works. I like the idea and am thinking about getting one myself.

Thanks for sharing! What quick-release/tripod system are you using? Do you use only Holbein paints, or are there other brands you'd recommend?

    • @mikesimpsonart
      @mikesimpsonart  2 года назад

I think the quick release is something I got from Open Box M.
The metal pallete is a Holbein labeled product that Open Box M sells. I actually have Winsor Newton paint in it.
