This man is a great teacher. I've never learned well from books, the steps never seem to line up in my head, but when this gentleman teaches anything about navigation it makes perfect sense.
This man is a genius. He is such a great professor. Im in the navy and I love reading about navigation and learn about maritime history and this man makes it so easy.
This intro tutorial was absolutely the best and simplistic demo of basic navigation I have seen. Great job and thanks for taking the time to video and post this superb example. What a fabulous resource you are.
The best, clearest and cleanest explanation. I'm not a navigator but this is helpful in any ship navigation technology designer. Yes please, a video on tide and currents, speed through water and speed over ground in radar , wind and current effects on ship STW and SOG
I watched the video and wanted to subscribe.... But oh no, I already have subscribed....just watching the sake of understand the navy movies....great teaching style sir.... Love from India
This is an amazing amount of information presented in such a masterful way of teaching. Pretty much everything anyone needs to know about chart plotting with the exception of Course To Steer, which Captain Dave Medeiros presents on another excellent video.
At the beginning I didn't know anything about navigation. However by the end I know how to calculate how far, at what speed, and how long it took me. It did help I knew the words he used. Thanks for the video.
Have been searching You tube for some info, and suddenly - God of Random gave me Your video. And i Would like to say - inspite of it is good educational video, Your voice is making the BEST ASMR Session EVER. Continue same way. Thanks and Best regards.
A very good video that explains what you need to do to understand your position over time taking into account the current. I hate maths and am crap at maths
This is a really an excellent tutorial on chart navigation. I love collecting maps (cartophile, if I may put it that way) and am passionate about manual navigation (using compass + maps for groun navigation) without the aid of an electronic positioning equipment (GPS). Though, I am not a professional or an amateur seafarer, still I wish to learn about this in more detail. Could you please tell me, where I can get the nautical map from, the one like in the video? Also, I would like to know from where one can get latest information on the ocean drifts for a particular location? Thank you again for this excellent and lucid video presentation.
Try richardsonscharts.com. Not sure if you'll find what you are looking for but they may help. Caltopo.com is a free topographic map download site for land and they may do navigation charts/maps as well but not sure. Has to be free download sites for what you are looking for but...good luck!
I was able to find some free full size maps by placing a want ad in a local online service (similar to Craigslist) A fellow that salvaged boats had plenty of them. They may be out of date but work well for practice.
Love it, too, but I got confused over what appeared to be as measuring distance with the dividers on the horizontal scale...I thought you cannot use longitude to measure distance. I'm preping for ASA105 this coming weekend and I don't even sail YET! Someday.
Very good video. I thought drift the was distance the tide has pushed you, rate was the speed of the tide and set was the angle the tide is pushing at?
txs alot for your explaining .You are very good teacher . I´d like to ask one thing , what are the lines that exist over the map , apart fromLat long I see more lines
good tutorial so if you can work out drift before and alter direction to compensate you could have been at the position intended setting was 90 degrees but drift caused a 107 degrees heading 17 degrees of drift so you could set off 73 degrees course instead of 90 and you be on track for intended position after 45 mins ? never done chart plotting before but its interesting
I know a 3rd mate and he says he gets paid a lot for a job that he says isn't that hard. He wasn't kidding. This is way easier than land navigation for sure in my opinion. Everyone Ive spoken to in that field loath celestial nav and rules of the road over anything else. Plotting is actually considered the easy part.
According to Bowditch the term Course Made Good (CMG) is a misnomer. More accurate term is Track Made Good. I guess that makes sense since your CMG is always Zero unless your Set & Drift and your Leeway is perfectly in line with your Course Line.
Great video, I think us Brits use different terminology for drift and set, drift being experienced tidal stream and set being estimated position - does this sound familiar? Thanks for the great video.
4:10... How can you tell your position without a GPS or any fixed position. You've been traveling for 1 hour do east at 90 degrees, there isnt anything around but ocean. How do you know youve been pulled south 1 nautical mile? You can't make a course correction if you dont know how the current is pulling you.
First of all, he already said he is "taking coordinates from gps" so he can calculate the errors. in the old days you would be making periodic celestial measurements to pinpoint, then basically do what he did to make corrections. Bonus: Currents can be mapped, timed and predicted. so you could dead reckon taking in account drift.
5 x 75 ÷ 100 = 3,75 (45 min is a 75% on a hour, is a 75% of 5kt = 3,75 sea mile.) What part is drift by wind and what is current? WK >>drift?>>BWK>>current?>>GrK ( How do i calculate when i drop sail and use engine, when i do not know both seperate? )
This man is a great teacher. I've never learned well from books, the steps never seem to line up in my head, but when this gentleman teaches anything about navigation it makes perfect sense.
Yes I agree ☑️

oh god as a deck cadet, this the most helpful, clear presentation of tutorial i've seen in youtube. You should be my professor. lol subscribing.
Have you ever tried out the Diginav Nautical Charts system?
This explanation was awesome! Nothing better than having someone demonstrate the logic on the Chart it really helped cement the process!
Thankyou for the vid.
It was well explained and easy to understand
Might even go buy a boat 😁
Dammit.. thank you. We the maritime community thanks you for taking the time to educate us.
Thank you so much. That made my neurons connect, ha! Testing tomorrow so I really appreciate you.
The best presentation of concepts I've seen so far. Thank you!
The best explanation ever. Thank you

Why in school so complicated, but here in youtube you can understand for only a minute. Great explanation.
that's what we provide in our college :)
The best, clearest and cleanest explanation.

Great video! I don't think an explanation can get any clearer than this! Thank you!
I watched once, it went in, and it will stay. You sir are a born teacher.
That's what I did in my other life
This was terrific - just at the right speed...clear and put in terms even I could understand! Thank you

Thank you for your kind comment
Sir, May i humbly ask how will i know if my chart is E or W or N or S?

Such a thorough and clear explanation. Thank you so much for this great video!
This was really clear to a complete beginner, thank you
The best, clearest, simplest explanation I have found. Thank you!
Very simple and educational. Thank you very much.
I don't even own a boat and this is intriguing!!
You dont need a boat for this to be useful. It also works with your private jet.
@@obiwanfisher537 O yes. Got 2 of those!!
Thanks so much you've explained this in such a simple way I can understand.
Enjoyable video. With electronic charts and GPS / Chart plotters some boat owners never utilize paper charts. I always liked having them on the boat.
Such Professionalism in so little time
Huge hug! You may have just saved my life. GOD bless you.
Oh yes, subscribing too. Very helpful and very clearly explained. Thanks.
Amazing video, great presentation...Thank you Master Chief.
Excellent explanation. Thank you

Very clear and informative video. Thank you :)
Very good. Thanks for sharing.
Can i ask what kind of rulers is used in that video, I am a new Maritime student I need this badly
2:15 when you just write on the chart - do you need to rubber it every time you use it again?
Plotting rule number 1: erase everything you dont need so it wont confuse you in the future.

point your index finger to the wind and feel your position, then you'll be able to fix it on a map
