Lasted nearly 120 years with very little maintenance. I would say that is a pretty good reference for whoever built it. The idiot trying to say otherwise glossed over the fact that it as the lack of maintenance that caused this
It was a very small dam, maybe ten feet tall, basically an earthen dam reinforced with wood and stone, holding back a six foot deep reservoir. It's in such a remote location, that it was only inspected every ten years or so, because its failure was considered such a low hazard.
The lake is just being reborn into a river again! Water is very lucky, next thing it will evaporate and fall as a thunderstorm over the ocean, float north and become an iceberg!!
Sadly only 1 republican voted for the last infrastructure bill (25 abstained). No money was sent anywhere, only equipment/aid paid for under the military budget. Perhaps reinstate the taxes on wealthiest Americans would be a good place to start. BAH SHEEP BAAH you people just bleat the same nonsense.
Even if all overseas spending ended right now, do you seriously believe Congress would actually spend money on this? Or just give corporate executive even more tax breaks?
The same thing happened at Lake Delton in Wisconsin Dells. The dam broke taking houses near the damn for a ride down the Wisconsin River. Lake Delton was completely empty except for a small stream flowing down the middle of it. The bottom was packed with decades of silt. I walked out on it and got stuck waist deep in the muck. Was lucky to crawl out of it, but covered head to toe looking and smelling like I took a dip in a septic tank. I wasn’t the only one though. Saw several others crawling too.
It wasn't designed by an engineer, but it stood virtually untouched for 120 years. The engineers today can't design a dam, bridge, or roof that will stand for mor than 10 years or at least struggle to
The I-35 bridge was designed by an engineer. How long did that last before falling into the river? Sometimes, people who actually build things know how to do it better. Hence why it lasted this long.
Yeah, totally not important to upkeep the integrity of the dam; let's just be like, "omg, so historic, a hundred years," and then be like, "oh, yeah -- not even on our property soooo not our problem 🤷." Thanks for sharing. This is annoying. P.S. Fix the DAM thing.
This is what happens when we don't take care of things in America first. Wait until all the bridges and and tunnels start collapsing. You have to do maintenance on everything if you want it to function properly. Instead the county just blames someone else.
ah.. the gullible red hat's have came out from their J6 SHAME to believe more dumb crap... I remember when Men never idolized other men.. but you MAGATS would eat corn out of trumps turds while he shat upon the Constitution. Vets against Dump
People commenting about how crappy the dam is / was and they fail to notice the dam hasn’t failed yet. The electric company dropped the ball here in my opinion. When heavy rains come dam operators need to open the flood gates to release the excess water. This dam held and the excess water had to go somewhere so it went around the dam. The people that lost structures should sue or be compensated for the power companies ignorance. This didn’t have to happen at all.
So they knew about it but didn't put the time into fix it, I feel people in charge of these Forest Services should either get more help or actually do some improvement projects. Thankfully the Dam was more like a beaver dam so not too much damage from the new flow
Those complaining about foreign aid, that really is a small amount compared to what is spent in the US. If you want to complain about something that sucks up a s-ton of money, how about subsidizing single mothers.
So instead of doing an engineering study on this dam and realizing that it is unstable, they decided to ignore the problem and push it on a different government body. I guarantee you that nobody will ever claim full responsibility here.
Wasn’t designed by an engineer, almost 100 years old , built of earth , had very little maintenance, probably built by hand ! Seems to me it was very well constructed then ! Just sayin them old timers had it going 👍🏻
I was told those Earthin' Dams were built during the Great Depression, part of the Government Work Programs to get people "working". The Dams were built, I wasn't told what the Dams were made with, BUT the Counties were to Budget $ $ $ for FUTURE improvements/ replacements. These Dams were supposed to last about 25 YEARS NOT to last 75 to 100 YEARS!
Nature doing what Nature does best, redesigning mother earth . Unfortunately someone put a small speed-bump in the path. No problem Nature took care it !! Its on federal forest land - Nature happens !!
One small low lying area was flooded several years :) So, the COUNTY decided to move an old, narrow, cement bridge to where the flood waters went into area farmer's fields so they can't plant crops. It wasn't more than a YEAR {chuckling}, the small "brook" decided to MOVE BACK. . .to it's original place where it had been for hundreds of years. :) :) :) BOY! Was the COUNTY Father's "M A D"! ! ! The farmer's effected could "tile" their low lying fields and they'd be "fine" IF THE "BROOK" DECIDES TO MOVE AGAIN :) :) :)
Didn't these genius politicians ever think about preventive maintenance budgets for this old dam and the people that would be impacted by the dam failure? Typical bureaucratic excuses of "no, we're not the ones responsible" type of game when things go bad.
How about looking into repairing or even better replacing hundred year old anything. You don't live in hundred year old house without repairs. Your body won't last a hundred years without repairs. Spend some money to help Americans first.

*Sounds like it's been nothing but luck up to now, if it can't handle a 100yr flood.*
The 'luck' obv being... this is the first 100 year flood it saw.
The dam never failed, the discharge gates got clogged by debris from heavy rain, this caused water to flow around the dam.
@@m4rvinmartian do you have a cite that it is only a 100 year flood?

Not sure what he means - engineers were building dams, bridges and canals since the beginning of history. Army Corps of Engineers was formed in 1775.
And the dam never failed, water went around it due to the discharge gates becoming clogged with debris from heavy rains.
@watermelonlalala, he meant the Beavers 🦫 🤣
You mean to tell me when a dam breaks, a lake drains? 🤯
It’s not disappearing…. it’s just going somewhere else
just like dear old dad
i can relate after these past 4 years i there are times i would like to go somewhere else

Maybe sending more money to other countries will help fix and maintain our own infrastructure.........😮
We’ll be importing dams from Ukraine soon
Gaza, Ukraine, Israel, and Russia have way more than us.. the so called people.
Blame your state reps lmao

Yes, lakes drain when dams break.....
And it gets colder when it's nighttime... You are purposely trying to undersell the real problem.

dam!

Reservoirs tend to do that when the dam that created them is gone.

michigan had the same thing happen 4 years ago. the dams were 100 years old.
When I lived in Minnesota, Mankato was in the southern part of the state. Did flooding move that dam to northeast Minnesota?
This is a different incident than your thinking of. There has been a lot of flooding in the northern part of the state also.
@@jbkid5706 The headline of this video said "Lake disappearing after dam breaks in Northeastern Minnesota..."
@@kenbobwrites 2 dams broke. 1 in southern MN by Mankato and one in the north.

Look how quickly various Depatments get into buck passing mode!!!! seems instinctual
