Still love this sketch. What makes it for me is that they improvise it so that they're talking over each other a bit and making various points, exactly like this kind of conversation would go in real life. Given the ridiculous premise, that grounds it in a way that makes it all the funnier.
Pegg is an outstanding actor.. Must be said.. All of them really.. This is what makes this show so good.. You can't have absurb deadpan with out exceptional actors
Kevin Eldon too. Absolutely quality, both he and the boss I recognise from the greatest satire show of all time Brass Eye. The lady with the short hair was om that show too, super talented and super gorgeous.
@@andyc6542 I think the fact he's had a such a successful career in acting, in Hollywood without having the typical "swagger" kind of validates that doesn't it?
@@patavinity1262 This is fake. No workplace has wanking while working. When a secretary with a tight skirt walks by, you have to go to the toilet and pull one off there, and splatter it all over the walls and then wipe it up with toilet paper.
The best thing about this sketch, and so many of the Big Train sketches were that the actors were given the ideas and allowed to improvise the dialogue. This was all off-the-cuff, including the stuck together sheets of 'figures'. In the dvd commentary they assume Kevin Eldon had quickly glued them together for the joke. Just brilliant.
"I do not want to be sent to a little room to have a wank like a leper" is such a perfect line. What happened to the British sketch show? Can't think of any in recent memory that have rivalled the days of Big Train and the Fast Show.
Limmy's Show was fantastic, Armstrong & Miller had its moments, Horrible Histories is one of the most consistently good sketch shows I've seen, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle has flashes of genius if you can put up with Stewart Lee's confrontational style.
I kind of liked The Fast Show, but it was the total opposite of Big Train. By the 3rd Fast Show you knew the punch-line that was coming because it was literally the same sketch over and over. Big Train was incredibly original.
"I do not want to be sent to a little room, to have a wank, like a leper." Only at this point I realized this sketch is about smoking. I feel like an idiot now. XD
+Rob Fraser Nope. Watch the sketch again. Almost all the complaints they're making are the same complaints smokers make about not being allowed to smoke in public.
+GMovieSeeker Interesting, this. On the dvd commentary Graham Linnehan (writer) said how people thought it was about smoking after watching - but they had written it without thinking about that at all. Also the Kevin Eldon bit with the sheets stuck together was improvised!
The way I see it, the "rights" you mention, in this sketch, is the right to wank in the office - something that is obviously repulsive but it seen as a necessity by the office workers just because of the fact that the practice has been around for long. The "corporation" here is the boss, who's adopting the rule of not wanking in the office: a rule that seems ridiculously obvious; yet the workers disagree because it takes away their ability to do something they've always been able to do in the office. When I said that this sketch "makes fun of people like you," I meant no offence to you as a person; what I meant was this sketch makes fun of your approach to a situation like this: some people try hard to hold on to orthodox morals even when the progressive societies they live in deem the morals ridiculous. I hope that I got my point across. I'd also like to add that this is my own interpretation of the sketch, and there might be other interpretations all of whom will be correct in their own right.
@James Cook he was a crap Scotty and the Kelvin Timeline feels like a generic action film. It might be exciting for Pegg but it's boring for the rest of us.
