This is also how I set the ignition timing on my 1988 B2200 with Weber carb. Since I have AC as well, for better visualization of the timing mark I've loosened the AC belt and just let it hang free while setting the timing. Ignition timing won't need to be checked or adjusted until you next remove your distributor or do more-involved engine work.
I will try rephrasing myself. sorry, english is my second language.. so to turn the engine manually from the crank. do i have to take the belt off? its on my truck. there is a belt on that pulley. to turn the crank to top dead center do i have to take the belt off? + can i spin it by hand or use breaker bar to turn the engine over manually to top dead center? and there is that big fan in between the crank n the radiator. do i have to remove that to turn it or will i be able to get breaker bar in there to the bolt to turn it? i am very sorry if i am not making sense. Hey Mitch first off thanks for the videos you post. Helped a lot w carb. Can ya do a video bout coil ignition? 88 b2200 new cap, rotor, wires and coil. Still no spark?
Great video, thanks. These engines are still in use in the UK in the Mazda Bongo (12 valve version of the FE). Timing is 6 +-1 from the factory but I've tried it at 8 and there is a difference. Would you recommend going further than that on pump E10 (95) octane?
@@MazdaMitch Thanks, I'll try it at that. We only have 2 grades here, 95 and 99. The 12v runs 9.5:1 CR in the Bongo. Also, on your website you have a file on the camshaft oiling problem where you mention adding some epoxy to help the cylinder 2 starvation issue. Can you add a picture of that or do a vid?
Mitch I need to ask, do you know of any starter “upgrades” for these trucks? I need to check timing on mine as I didn’t set it, the trucks bored 40 over and I know the timings been advanced, but I think it’s been advanced too far, as the starter just is not happy. It runs really well and idles at a smooth 1000, but as stated the starter is just having a really hard time with it
I just bought an 86 B2000 (I'm so stoked), and it's had the Weber swap already done. I am trying to verify the timing on mine, but I don't have the same marks or anything like you've pointed out. My ONE mark is on the driver side of the timing cover, and there's no numbers - just an arrow. There are two marks, very close together, on the crank pulley. I need to buy a digital timing light, but sheesh - any idea how to tell where it's at with an old skool timing light?
@@MazdaMitch yeah I can see those. The only problem is that I can't tell what the timing is at. If I decided to bump it up, I can't tell what that is. I'm gonna get a digital timing light so I can do this and get it right on. TY man - love your videos and the website is awesome!
Well, i had bought a 1986 mazda b2000. Ive had a b2200 before and know that they are fairly similar. I put a weber on it for a number of reasons. Ive been following the steps you've done but my truck runs like garbage. Some days are better than others. The most i could get out of it is 15mpg. Im thinking there is still something else wrong that i havent found
so these trucks dont come with some kind of sensor to adjust the idle when the AC comes on? I always wondered if I was missing something on my truck because I turned the idle up a little on my truck as well so when I turn on the AC the idle doesnt drop that much
I lioke all your videos it looks like your number 2 spark plug is loose mine got loose and now i had to put 2 alum washers un the plug and it still leaks pressure out. How can i fix the leak ? Thank You
I have an ‘89 5 speed. I noticed the dash is different. I do not have a tachometer. Does that mean my truck was originally automatic or do some of them just not come with a tach?
Thank you, I tried that and it help but it looks like the governor cam or weight is malfunctioning. With the vacuum hose plugged the timing light shows retarding on acceleration.
Great video man. Any chance you know how much gap we need for the points? and when you set the points to the high point of the distributor shaft do you need to set the engine to TDC?
@@MazdaMitch Some of the trucks from those years did come with points. My B2000 for example. It may however be the case that in the u.s. market they were all electronic ignition. I'm based in new zealand and ive seen three of four of these b2000s and b2200s that have points ignition.
I have a 86 b2600. I put a new weber carb on it, got it running and drove it around a little. It sounded like it was running really rough then it died. And I haven't been able to get it running since. I have good fuel supply good spark air and even good compression. Any ideas on what I should do?
Great information as usual also I noticed this truck has a different hood strut setup. Is this strut setup better than the one you covered in another video? Thanks
Plan on doing a good shocks soon, but to answer your real question, the shocks in this video are not as good. I'll explain the difference in the new hood shocks video coming soon.

I think I destroyed my new head yesterday. 3 broken camshaft bolts, one valve cover bolt, the camshaft pin from the main timing sprocket and the bolt holding the main timing sprocket. I think I'm going to have to leave the truck in the back 40 for another winter. I'm not sure where to go from here. I am thinking of doing the FE3 swap for my main mini truck project and that will give me another set of parts for the cab plus that broke yesterday. TBD. Sigh. Thanks for the video Mitch!

The engines do not produce enough compression for anything over 87 octane, so you are wasting your money. Run it at 12 degrees.

You only set degrees when the engine is running with a timing light. Not beforehand

The gear

The stock carb does when equipped with AC. If you swap to a Weber carb, that goes away.
wat if your timing is everytime not accurate ? Its always somethin diffrent. But it does 1 degree front middle 1 degree back, and switches constant.
The woodruff key on the crank may be wearing and causing this

It shouldn't be loose. Maybe yours is stripped out. You need to check. If it's, you can repair with a helicoil.
I have an ‘89 5 speed. I noticed the dash is different. I do not have a tachometer. Does that mean my truck was originally automatic or do some of them just not come with a tach?
It was an LX option and possibly SE-5 option.
Would this work for setting the timing on my fuel injected b2200 with the 2.2 becuse the distributors are different ?
It's different and that's covered in the shop manual at Mazdaminitruckin.com
I cannot advance distributor enough to achieve correct timing? Do you know what is happening?
Your distributor is not in correct, it's stabbed a tooth off. That's my guess.

No points in the distributor on this engine. 86-93 electronic distributor.
But on older vehicles like motorcycles or things that had points we always used to use the a business card the width of a business card
