This is the best example of what elektron intended when they named the octatrack a "performance" sampler. Great video Matthew, so informative and inspiring.
Ok, wow. This is exactly the kind of thing I've been trying to do for a few years now, I had no idea the Octatrack could do it. I have a lot to think about now. Thanks!
i wish i never came across this video... i been training hard core with my MPC One, SP404 MkII and MicroFreak. Now i wanna throw these out the window and go all elektron... damn that octatrack really kills it. i realize more and more that my soul has much stronger appetite for BUILDING live music.. that could go on without stopping for a long time. you just demonstrated a quick masterclass. genius stuff. i think im eventually going to follow your footsteps. this looks too fun AND a solid way of doing cool gigs and earn some money too. subbed
Thanks for the reliably excellent content! I always learn something from your videos, but I must have learned a DOZEN hyper useful things from this one. Love it man! Thank you!
When you look for a tutorial your expecting fundamentals but here you get the feel of. "hey, do you want to play like me? Well, I do it this way." Well, yes. Yes as a matter of fact, I do want to play like you. This is why I like this tutorial :)
If you want to record one handed from any of the 3 inputs without record trigs in this setup, just set REC1 setup to AB, CD, and SRC3, then setup REC2 for quantized recording to PLEN, then make sure you have quick record mode enabled. Now you just select the track on which you wish to record then press one or more of the REC buttons, just before the end of your pattern loop, and bam it records it on the next “1”. Anyway Matthew, great video as usual, and nice jam too! 💯
@@EZBOT_ Ah, I thought you were only using 1 shot rec trigs when I wrote that. QREC is so handy isn’t it? BTW OT is by far my fave piece of gear too ❤️🤘

Oh. Damn. I've been on the fence about the octotrack because I hear people say things like "it's it most uninspiring gear I've ever owned" but those effects plus the mixer function, I can see why people also love it. And why the price tag. You should be sponsored by electron, I'm sold. Now I just need to rob a bank or something.
Brilliant Matthew! Demystifying the OT again and again..AND a banger tune! Very inspiring. learning something new every 10 seconds here and I look forward to watching over and over..
This is the inspiration I need. I'm using the exact setup. Bought the OT anniversary when it dropped and it was so daunting to learn I've put it on the backburner for a year now. Finally going to get motivated to learn it in this format.
The OT is packed with functions on purpose due to its multi-purpose capabilities. It is not necessarily meant to be used as all it can do all of the time, you can start using it for what you need NOW, it is NOT overwhelming this way. Start easy, you don't need to use the resampling features, midi tracks and parts all together.make a little music using a few sampler tracks and some effects. you will find you can make some great music and expand your knowledge as you go. I have personally explored it completely when I first got it, and tried to learn 99% immediately. I have never again used the arranger, I never used pick up machines, hell I never really used on the fly resampling like in this video, yet the OT is where most of my live is based and I really could not do without right now.
i came here looking how i can use my octatrack to feed my guitar through so i can have one output to feed into a line out input to a camera for recording videos. brilliant video. THANK YOU
Probably the best explanation I've seen on this. Still trying to wrap my head around loop based music since I'm into performing on an instrument, but this looks like a nice middle ground between DJ -style loop playback and musicianship.

Have watched a bunch of vids on the Octatrack and read a good amount of the manual and this is the first video that really made its use click for me. Many thanks. Will Patreon the fuck out of the template if I get the unit… but I’m gonna hold out for a MK3. They’ll do it. Too many people love this machine but have gripes about it which are easy to fix. 🤘
Awesome video Matt on all levels. Your video quality game has gone next level 🔥. This has given me some fresh ideas which is awesome 😎 and I thank you for that 🙏
this is crazy good! Was always overwhelmed / lazy with all the gain staging and "lofi" fx to build cool sets. This seems to help a lot! As I'm not a DJ this will kickstart my not existing career! 😀
I just use mine for production so far, but this Jedi level performance stuff fascinates me and looks fun. Seems like this mode of operation would be excellent for preventing dementia too! 😉 I'd be really keen to see what territory you could cover if you uploaded a long (~30 to 60min) mix using this template. Def feeling the vibe on this tune
Nice. This would also solve that problem of, oh i need to stop the music to load a new project into my (mpc/mc707/etc). You could use the Octatrack as your master tempo, be playing back your flux track master loop, and be quickly loading in an entirely new project. Which you could then mix in bit by bit using the crossfader. Very cool concept thanks for this video.
yeah i felt this comment as a MPC One owner. 100% facts! transition is so key... this video shows how to execute it very nice and seamlessly. one of the pain points of MPC for live performances. but this video gave me new inspiration so I'm gonna come up with a workaround on my MPC until i have enough luxury to buy new gears like Octatrack

This is exactly why I bought an OT. I have a mk1 which seems to be a bit more convoluted but they are much cheaper and can do most of what you're demonstrating.
A second OT Mk1 is probably one of the best value for money pieces of gear you can get your hands on. Insanely powerful. Same goes for the A4 Mk1 if your not worried about using Overbridge
I usually turn my Flex and Recorder Formats from 44.1/16-bit to 44.1/24-bit (PROJ>CONTROL>Memory) and that seems to make a significant quality difference to my ears. The only sacrifice is a smaller flex mem buffer.
Very helpful video. Have been looking for a creative performance submixer option since I'm running out of inputs in my Model 12 and seemed boring just to plug another standard mixer into it. Thank you kindly for this walkthrough!
This is great! I’m looking to add an OT to my DT/DN setup as a performance mixer. I’ve been back and forth with the idea due to the learning curve and that it’s 44.1khz 16 bit. I already wrote a max patch that lets me control scenes in bitwig using the midi from the OT crossfader and scene buttons, adding the looping would knock this out of the park though
How much do you have to look at those screens when live? Do you feel you can muscle memory the interfaces so when its really dark and in the heat of the moment, you can do all these things? Thanks for making this video!
The looper functionality is why I got thé Octatrack, but it doesn’t always seem to record when I want it to. Probably am doing something wrong or I am not understanding everything about it. There are some more steps involved then are logical to me. Which probably also gives it more options. I guess getting the template is also a good option 😀
It will wait for the beginning of whatever you're trying to record. I believe it depends on your settings, when looping. It won't matter that you pressed the record button on time, It will wait.
@@whendoesthisend yes, you have to set a record trigger that can be set to armed, or unarmed. This to make sure that you don’t constantly overwrite the buffer.
