  • 8th June 2011. Split Barge Corksand, IMO No. 8818958 - Discharging at sea. This ship literally splits in two to allow the dredge material to drop out of the ship's hold. This ship is being used together with sister ship Longsand and dredger Maricavor to complete the dredging operation on the river Tyne.

By 'eck! Pitty the poor bastard who's out on the dredge material when a misinformed
crew member pouches the lever to open the bottom hatches!

The Maricavor barge was good to watch during operations on the Tyne. I spent a couple of days just watching it from under the red lighthouse on the Groyne, no videos though. I'd love to see a drivers eye view on the Komatsu backhoe! How do they know what's been dredged already and what hasn't? Amazing stuff.

The project survey department does a daily multibeam survey that is used in the backhoe to show the progress of the dreding

How do they empty the resultant water after they close the bottom of the barge.? Or do they just leave it in there until it goes out when the next load is dumped?

I've dumped this type of "dump scow" several times. After the dump the two "halves" of the scow close up. There is "resultant water" in the bottom of the scow...not much...it is left there and the next load of sand/mud pushes it up to the top...and is dumped with the next load. It's a continuous cycle.
