I remember my father commenting to my mother that he thought she was pretty well tanked up or loaded on some of the segments. Years later I realized how frightening she truly was especially wielding a knife to cut the sandwich. I used to play some of the episodes around Halloween to frighten friends and family.
I love it when the older generations like you share your favorite kids shows from when you were kids. Reading you're happy memories brings me much joy. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
"I'm going to get warshed - whoa! I stumbled over that, didn't I? Yes, I bumped it, let's put it that way; I bumped it." I see a strong influence from Miss Frances onto Mister Rogers, in the tone of voice and delivery.
I remember watching Ding Dong School, the first thing i remember viewing when i was 2.5 years old (1952). Also The Lone Ranger. And Cheerios tv commercials, which is when i learned tv ads lie because even though i ate Cheerios, which i didn’t like, i was never able to form a muscle with a Cheerio in its center as promised by the tv ad. 2 year olds will believe anything. 72+ year olds don’t believe in much they haven’t already in our belief system. Got keep our sense of humor healthy.
I am eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich with lettuce right this minute, because I had to know what difference, if any, the lettuce made. I don’t hate it! The lettuce doesn’t really change the predominant PB taste and it adds a surprisingly satisfying crunch. I kind of dig it.
Wow, I loved her as a kid.....I turned it on for my 2 and a half year old granddaughter and she actually watched this! Kudos to Miss Frances, 60 years in. : )
Be nice you people. It was mostly all adlibed probably with no lines. She probably made each kid watching she ws talking to them. She did something right to live to 94.
This is agonizing. I showed this to my 6-year-old granddaughter, and she watched the first 2 minutes, her eyes glazed. "Not with the peel on! NOOOOO!" Finally she asked me, "What's wrong with her?"
i used to avoid this poor woman like the plague: even at five years old I could not abide her, or her voice. brrrr. i was more interested in Rootie Kazootie and Howdy Doody, lol.
I remember watching this show as a little kid with my mom. She seemed to enjoy it, whereas I found it condescending and boring. If you want to get the attention of a 4-5-year-old boy, don't talk to him like this. Instead, blow up a car or sic a tiger on somebody. Little boys are thugs.
OMG. I feel so old. Miss Francis was one of my favorites. I must say she does seem to have been hitting the bottle. She even trips This is truely hilarious!
How much "help" would you need to talk to preschoolers every day? I watched this too but was a bigger fan of Captain Kangaroo & "Froggie the Gremlin" (forget the name of that show).
Actually, not THAT outdated in a way. Watch again closely, and you'll see where Fred Rogers got a lot of his ideas for his award-winning "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," which first aired in 1968 and ran until 2001. The way Miss Frances talks to her little television viewers, asks them questions and encourages them sounds quite a bit like Mister Rogers would pattern his show not that much later.
yeah, I remember watching her when I was a toddler too. Looking back, it's kind of hard to imagine why I liked this, but I do have fond memories. She seems like she's high here...lol. My favorite was Capt. Kangaroo, especially when the Banana Man was on.
look i've been eat peanut butter sandwichs all my life --i never ever put lettuce in them --what is that some kind of jewish thing ---she sounds like she has just finished smoking a joint and has the munchies big time ----and another thing where the glass of milk too wash it down with
czar14617 I find it disturbing that you are so cruel. What is the matter with you. I suppose you pride yourself that you are of the social group who preaches tolerance and diversity.
Talk about a blast from the past! I watched her every day. Where is her bell???? If I recall, she use to ring a bell at the start of the program. I too became a teacher....in Special Ed. This was just great......thanks to the uploader!
When I make a peanut butter and banana sandwich, I always think of this video. And I start imitating her, and when she says "press the other piece of bread down GENTLY"....I take my fist and slam it down on the sandwich.
No, Romper Room was a poor version of this. Miss Frances is kind and sincere; the Romper Room teachers were the ones who got it all out of a book, by rote, who spoke unnaturally slow, as if we were stupid!
I remember an episode where she was showing a begonia... I begged to get one at the dime store! 🪴 Then, I got her book “My Goldfish”. Guess what I begged for next??? 🐡 I loved her record, “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas”. I can still hear her say “Now, I’ll wait while you turn the record over.” 📀
This just fills my heart with love. This wasn't a peice of my childhood, but I wish it was. I'm sitting here smiling "peanut butter, lettuce.. bread. Wait! Forgot BANANA! " and I'm not mad at her like I would be at all of the characters in shows now.
OMG - this looks like it back in the 50s or early 60s - doctors used to hand out Miltown like it was candy - I can see she has been going for routine checkups.
Was going threw old radio and record player website once, and saw something strange , a record player with the name Ding Dong School, so I researched it a little. Talked to a friend about it and he remembered watching it as a child. I was born 15-20 years later, so I missed watching this tv series. I remember watching Micky Mouse club in the morning.
I was mesmerized by Miss Frances. She had dolls! She did girl things! The other shows for kids, Howdy Doody, Pinky Lee, etc. were comparatively rowdy and boy-centric.
@stewballmax3 OMG......inebriated!! Funny! She looked a bit like my kindergarten teacher. BUT...my teacher was as tall as her students. She was a dwarf with an hunch back (truth!).We all loved her dearly. Her name was Miss Moffat.
i remember this. i was probaby 3 or 4. boring but i watched. romper room and capt kangaroo too. cartoons betty boop, popeye, scrappy, tom and jerry. etc. good old days.
I think Sandra Lee has taken a few lessons from Miss Francis. I am sad to admit- I remember Miss francis and her Ding- Dong school. So appropriateley named......but she never taught me to spell....sorry. NEVER GO NEAR A SHARP KNIFE children--ignore all the sharp knives in front of me!!!!!
LOVED Miss Frances when I was a kid!
Distinctly remember my parents discussing whether or not Miss Frances was clinically insane.
HAHAHAHA!!!!
I remember my father commenting to my mother that he thought she was pretty well tanked up or loaded on some of the segments. Years later I realized how frightening she truly was especially wielding a knife to cut the sandwich. I used to play some of the episodes around Halloween to frighten friends and family.
It's a shame you view this with modern-day cynicism. Remember, this was 1952.The world was obviously much different.
For heavens sake the woman had a doctorate in early child education. You don't get a doctorate by being hammered.
I'm 62 and my earliest memories were of Ding Dong school and the wonderful Miss Francis......absolutely loved her
I love it when the older generations like you share your favorite kids shows from when you were kids. Reading you're happy memories brings me much joy. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
I only found out about this show a few days ago while reading the complete Peanuts 1955/1956. Its referenced several times in the comic strip.
Anyone who puts lettuce in that sandwich must be tripping.
Lettuce in a peanut butter sandwich??? Never!!!
How about in a Thai lettuce wrap?
I totally have that very same rooster plate. Four of them, actually...vintage Melamine.
I have to say this is better than what the kids watch now.
Miss Frances looks and sounds like she has more than just sandwiches hidden away in the cupboards...
"I'm going to get warshed - whoa! I stumbled over that, didn't I? Yes, I bumped it, let's put it that way; I bumped it."
I see a strong influence from Miss Frances onto Mister Rogers, in the tone of voice and delivery.
" . . let's put it that way; I bumped it. "
. . but thirty seconds later she's back to saying she
'Stumbled' over it ! ( 1:46 )
@dancingbutrfli
Frances Horwich died in Scottsdale, Az in 2001 at the age of 94
I remember watching Ding Dong School, the first thing i remember viewing when i was 2.5 years old (1952).
Whoever uploaded this got it wrong. She uses PB, Banana and lettuce; not jam.
We get it; we have had thousands of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. But who puts lettuce on that? Seriously?
This sammich needs bacon!
Bacon improves everything!
Listening to her reminds me of Hillary Clinton , and all the rest of the 119th Minions.
Caution : Too much Ding Dong school causes softening of the brain.
mark brandum You are a glowing example of modern tolerance and acceptance, full of criticism and cutting remarks.
Precursor to Mr. Rogers
LMFAO....some of these comments are too funny...😂😂😂
Be nice you people. It was mostly all adlibed probably with no lines. She probably made each kid watching she ws talking to them. She did something right to live to 94.
I loved Miss Frances but it sounded like she was on seconal
ok yuck..who would eat that ? "let us" skip the Lettuce ! lol
Elvis was watching this episode
This is agonizing.
I showed this to my 6-year-old granddaughter, and she watched the first 2 minutes, her eyes glazed. "Not with the peel on! NOOOOO!" Finally she asked me, "What's wrong with her?"
The peel is not on it.
Your granddaughter seems joyless lol.
Well Miss Francis audience is preschoolers so a six year old would probably be bored.
i used to avoid this poor woman like the plague: even at five years old I could not abide her, or her voice. brrrr. i was more interested in Rootie Kazootie and Howdy Doody, lol.
She always reminded me of a weird lady wrestler.
OMG. I feel so old. Miss Francis was one of my favorites. I must say she does seem to have been hitting the bottle. She even trips This is truely hilarious!
She trips, alright. Orange Sunshine. . . . .
How much "help" would you need to talk to preschoolers every day? I watched this too but was a bigger fan of Captain Kangaroo & "Froggie the Gremlin" (forget the name of that show).
Da yoo lawk santwitch-hss.....Aw lawk santwitch-hss...
An early influence on Julia Child.

On seeing this today for the first time since 1954, I had the same thought. Mr. Rogers was the male version of Miss Frances!
That broad must have been high when she thought up that godawful mess of a sammich!!!! Almost as bad as liver and yogurt!!!!!
Wasn't Elvis's fav. Sandwich peanut butter, banana AND bacon?
Brought back how tv USED to be. I am 75 yrs old.
yeah, I remember watching her when I was a toddler too. Looking back, it's kind of hard to imagine why I liked this, but I do have fond memories. She seems like she's high here...lol. My favorite was Capt. Kangaroo, especially when the Banana Man was on.
Thumbs up if you came here after watching Oddity Archive: Episode 13
Ding Dong School: all the smart kids go there.
I thought she was perfect as a kid, but she sliced the banana the wrong way and what's up with that lettuce? She ruined that sandwich.
"Now, I have to get the cat out of the oven...it's almost done!"
By the way, this woman had a Ph.D - "Piled Highly & Deeply."
can't believe all the sarcastic remarks
Lettuce with peanut and banana. Ugh! Who puts lettuce on peanut butter. I'm 68 and I remember watching this show.
Only 1950s kids will remember.
found this on tiktok- absolutely one of the most soothing things I've seen in a minute.
thank you! Perfect thing to get me through finals season
look i've been eat peanut butter sandwichs all my life --i never ever put lettuce in them --what is that some kind of jewish thing ---she sounds like she has just finished smoking a joint and has the munchies big time ----and another thing where the glass of milk too wash it down with
We all put lettuce on our peanut and butter and banana sandwiches in the kibbutz.
czar14617 I find it disturbing that you are so cruel. What is the matter with you. I suppose you pride yourself that you are of the social group who preaches tolerance and diversity.
Hahahah! You made my day!
Talk about a blast from the past! I watched her every day. Where is her bell???? If I recall, she use to ring a bell at the start of the program. I too became a teacher....in Special Ed. This was just great......thanks to the uploader!
She did ring the bell in the beginning
A high sandwich made of good clean food. Will never have that again in our lifetime
Needs Miracle Whip
She's completely hammered.
Thanks for the memory
Where you at? Where you at? There you go! There you go! Lmfao!!!!
I was young to remember but I do recall Miss Francis ringing the bell. That got my attention! I remember Soupy Sail (?)
Soupy Sales with Black Tooth, White Fang, and Hippy!
There was something vaguely creepy about Miss Frances, as I recall... early 1950's - nuclear radiation everywhere...
This is from the later syndicated edition of the program (produced on videotape, and shown on most local stations via kinescope film), circa 1958-'59.
1:50 yea i saw that you got washed.... and what ya stumbled over lmao
As a little girl in the 50’s, I just adored Miss Frances.
loose the lettuce.
Miss Frances was very cool and enjoyable to spend tv time with. I bought the lunch box with her picture, or that is, my parents bought it for me.
I'm sure kids were lining up to get a piece of this yummy sandwich!!!
It would be tasty if she added bacon to that sandwich ;)
Miss Frances is hitting her special sauce between takes.
😂😂😂
I suspect that you are older than I am--I remember Ding Dong School as if it were yesterday. Do you also remember Romper Room?
Does anyone know whatever happened to Miss Frances
She died July 22 2001 of congestive heart failure
I remember watching this show as a little kid with my mom. She seemed to enjoy it, whereas I found it condescending and boring.
If you want to get the attention of a 4-5-year-old boy, don't talk to him like this. Instead, blow up a car or sic a tiger on somebody. Little boys are thugs.
Oh my, we've come a long way!! Hard to believe people watched this...
I just found a lunch box from this show in a thrift store for 2 dollars in good condition to
Made in 1952,without parody or irony.Refreshing!
When I make a peanut butter and banana sandwich, I always think of this video. And I start imitating her, and when she says "press the other piece of bread down GENTLY"....I take my fist and slam it down on the sandwich.
Is it true that this show was actually replaced by The Price Is Right? That just seems odd.
She was the Julia Child of early childhood education.
Who's Harvey?
Was this a Poor Man's Version of Romper Room or something?
Years before Romper Room.
Then, I got her book “My Goldfish”. Guess what I begged for next??? 🐡
I loved her record, “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas”. I can still hear her say “Now, I’ll wait while you turn the record over.” 📀
You have a great memory ... thanks for refreshing mine. 😃
This just fills my heart with love. This wasn't a peice of my childhood, but I wish it was.
I'm sitting here smiling "peanut butter, lettuce.. bread. Wait! Forgot BANANA! " and I'm not mad at her like I would be at all of the characters in shows now.
I think the term ding dong directly relates to the buzz Miss Francis gets when she's polishing off a bottle of brandy.
OMG - this looks like it back in the 50s or early 60s - doctors used to hand out Miltown like it was candy - I can see she has been going for routine checkups.
I watched this as a kid. But watching her now, I realize she must have been on drugs.
I watched her all the time when I was little.
i never went near sharp knives till i watched this
What the hell is "woished"?
This has a different theme song from the one I remember.
this is awesome!!! :)
Never had the lettuce.
Lettuce? 🧐🤔
Peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time
Loved Miss Frances, when is her bio pic coming out. She influenced later children's programming. at 2 or 3 she's moving at lightning speed.
I'm in 2021😳
I was mesmerized by Miss Frances. She had dolls! She did girl things! The other shows for kids, Howdy Doody, Pinky Lee, etc. were comparatively rowdy and boy-centric.
Interesting
OMG
why does it say peanut butter jam + lettuce up in the title when she does not put any jam on it??? only peanut butter and banana and lettuce!!!!!!
@stewballmax3 OMG......inebriated!! Funny!
She looked a bit like my kindergarten teacher. BUT...my teacher was as tall as her students. She was a dwarf with an hunch back (truth!).We all loved her dearly. Her name was Miss Moffat.
What a weirdo.
@tpitman
I think she was loaded, She seemed a bit clumsy.
I think I have the hots for Miss Frances, she's so nurturing
+J. Dovales Therapy will cure you of that . . .
i remember this. i was probaby 3 or 4. boring but i watched. romper room and capt kangaroo too. cartoons betty boop, popeye, scrappy, tom and jerry. etc. good old days.
4:43 “Look what a high sandwich it makes!” I’ll say. 🥪
@phoebecatgirl I remember making fun of it when I was 7 or 8, but I also remember watching it. She was only a bit patronizing...
quoi
Next episode, she makes a "Wish Sandwich" for The Chips !!!!
Salut
@hollyhilton13 Miss Frances did say that a grown up uses the knife.
Miss Frances was so cheerful. I was a little girl then
Bearlyrufus, I want a refund! NO JAM!
Now that is a different kind of sandwich!!!
i was so scared she was gonna cut herself
