Christmas Elves being super mischievous with the video today... thanks for flagging the paused section in the comments. It's why we ALWAYS read the comments... you lot are so quick to help us out! Hopefully trimmed out and fixed now. Should update soon! *if you don't know what we're talking about... it's because it's fixed. Haha
I'm from Germany - The Feuerzangenbowle is more of an older tradition that isn't oftern practiced by today's generation. The main reason why it still is a thing is that there is an old and beloved movie from the 50s called Feuerzangenbowle which is still being broadcast today and which keeps on reminding us of the tradition.
But you find it on every Christmas market (at least here in the south?). At home, I guess, most people will stick to an easier and smaller„light“ version, usually using sugar cubes and a special small spoon as else you need to do a pretty large portion for the „real one“.
I have no idea what you mean by "today's generation" but regardless, that's not quite my experience. At work someone always suggests a Feuerzangenbowle event every year (and we usually do it). We also have quite a few renditions at the christmas markets - some do a big vat of wine with burning cones above, others do individual servings that use a sugar cube doused in something high proof then set alight. The residents of our building usually has a winter gathering and at least half the time someone brings a rig and we fire it up. And no one ever talks about that movie - I think it's still a thing because it's DELICIOUS and fun. Maybe it's a regional thing but in Munich, the Feuerzangenbowle seems to be alive and well among people of all ages.
I’m from North West Germany and its definitely still a thing here. Every Christmas market has it, as others pointed out either as a big pot with the big cone or as individual servings with a tiny cone. I’ve also done it with my friends and at Christmas parties. The film is a fond tradition in and of itself though, it was shown every year at my university, you take a sip every time someone says “Feuerzangenbowle” and some other rituals. I guess the reason it’s less popular than Glühwein is that it always requires a fair bit of preparation and enough people to drink a pot of it lol.
Anyone else noticing a weird editing glitch from 16:24 - 17:26?? I guess they really wanted to hit that 20 minute runtime. Edit: The error has been fixed yay
@@rolfs2165 Sadly most of the gags only work on german. 🥲 BUT both are part of the german christmas tradition! You can't have one without the other. Also Stroh Rum was chosen, especially because of its high percentage of alcohol.
Being portuguese myself, you don't have any idea how HAPPY I was when I saw that lampreia de ovos!! Glad to see my country represented. BTW anything with a lot of egg yolks and a lot of sugar, it's probably a portuguese sweet created in a monastery or convent
I'm loving the return of James Currie! I hope this isn't just a December thing. And a battle between the 3 chefs (Ben, Kush, and James) against the 3 normals would be epic!
I'd love that, I also think a Beat the Chef tournament type thing could work, with the top chef and top normal competing in the final. There's so many possibilities with an even number of chefs and normals. They could also pair up chef and normal into teams and have them compete across various formats. (A live weekend centring around that would be great.)
James was quite close too as we have something similar called "Putu Bambu" in Malaysia - rice flour cakes with palm sugar center steamed in bamboo and topped with slighly salted coconut shreds - eaten at any time of the day. I guess that they could similar origins as the "Puto Bumbong" given how similar the names are.
@@nickxandar7720yes! In Indonesia they also have something called Kue putu. What cinches it as a Filipino dish (besides it being purple) is the part about it being for Christmas. My family had a tradition when I was growing up. Every year we would pick a country, research their traditional holiday foods, and make that our Christmas dinner. It was always so much fun (even if the food wasn't always to our taste 😁). So this was kind of nostalgic. 😊
Yay! Feuerzangenbowle! Takes me back to the 1970s here in Germany. It's coming back into fashion again now. Fun fact: The German word for the cone of sugar is the Zuckerhut. The Zuckerhut is the German name for the mountain in Brazil with Christ the Redeemer on top. Also there is a famous book/film called the Feuerzangenbowle which is an absolute classic comedy from the 1930s.
Yeah, the movie was something of a German version of the Rocky Horror Picture show back when I was at university - the student union would organise a showing of the picture in the largest auditorium on campus and you would get the drink and people would bring flashlights and old fashioned alarm clocks to use during the scenes in the movies (flashlight when the main character has help with the map from somenone with a mirror). Good times :)
Slight correction: The famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio sits atop the Corcovado mountain, the Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar) mountain is the one with the cable cars going between it and the Morro da Urca besides it.
The moment they raised the cloche with a purple yam topped with cheese I automatically screamed "PUTO BUMBONG!". I was also ecstatic that Mike got it right!
Great video! Just letting you know that from 16:25 ish - 17:30 ish it just pauses (unsure if its just me but even refreshing the page it still happens) :)

I love that they show the gastronomy of my city, I am from Caracas, don't let James be sad, in fact he has the right idea, the vast majority of bakers and bakeries in Caracas are of Portuguese influence
As a Portuguese, im happy to see lampreia in here, it's actually really tradicional and i understand why it seems "weird". But at the same time any portuguese only looking by the color can tell that lampreia as not "good" the actual middle was not as the same as ours not even close, but i understand the limitations to recreate something from other country and etc, was still fun to watch the reactions :D But i would love for them to taste an actual Lampreia and Bolo Rei *.*
We have a big Feuerzangenbowle event at my university in Germany every year. Basically a big christmas party where it is served for "free" (paid for with tuition fees obviously). Always good fun.
I got the Philippines right. I was teally far away from Venezuela as I guessed Germany, and Sweden for Germany and Greece for Portugal. What fun! This month has been incredible. I hope guys have a super blessed Christmas!
THANK YOU SORTED FOR FEATURING MY FAVORITE DISH PUTO BUMBONG ❤ Nowadays it can be served year round but it is more featured during Xmas season because Ube crops are more prolific during this time.
Actually puto bumbong uses pirurutong or black/purple rice not ube traditionally and the reason it's featured during christmas is because it serves as the breakfast food of farmers after simbang gabi. A form of carbohydrate loading before working the day in the fields. This was done during the spanish colonial period. Using ube or purple food coloring was done in later years much later than when the tradition of serving it around Christmas so the ube crops being prolific are completely unrelated. 😊 (Edit: spelling)
Feuerzangenbowle! My grandpa used to make it on New Years Eve. The kitchen went dark and the only light source was the burning sugar cone. Too bad I was too small to taste it, but I always loved the spectacle
I love that James just randomly came back in two videos without explanation imagine being a subscriber that joined when James already left you would be like who is he? Why is he there? 😂
Really nice seeing you try something from Portugal! I spent most of the video thinking you could feature Bolo Rei or Bolo Rainha, both are very traditional Christmas treats in Portugal and I was really surprised and happy when you revealed the Lampreia de Ovos =) Merry Christmas to the entire SortedFood team!
Thank you for letting us play along! 2:36 I guessed Italian as well… 5:32 I don’t like mulled wine, but this is such a fun thing to have on a feast table 🤩 10:27 As an Indonesian, I knew right away where it’s from because we have something similar to that although we don’t necessarily relate it to Christmas. 18:39 These sweetened egg yolk threads can be found in Southeast Asia as well, so I thought it must be from an ex-Portuguese colony, but probably not in Southeast Asia since _puto bumbong_ was already there. The answer nevertheless kinda surprised me 😅
@@andieluke1366 IKR? While there are versions of _kue putu_ with purple yam as well, but the Filipino version is slightly different, the color deeper and the flavor heavier. I think it’s because they add butter in their _puto bumbong_ while ours is made without. Although I have seen _putu bambu_ with cheese topping as well.
Yeah, while it is a treat to have in Xmas in Philippines, it's not really something specific to that holiday here either. Often have it with butter rather than condensed milk on top. Different regions do top it differently though so you'll find some with and without cheese, come heavier because of using rice or just a powdered mix and so on. Though yeah, I'm sure many other SEA countries have a variation but the presentation of it is very Philippines, so it was easy to tell even on the thumbnail 😂
@@ulrickai yeah, I kinda understand. Most of the stuff we serve for Christmas and other festivals are the same stuff we eat in daily life, probably just different in serving size and variety.
Feuerzangenbowle is an absolute must have at our place every year! It's one of my favourite christmas traditions to get together with my brother, two of my cousins and one's boyfriend each year to make it and have a karaoke night😊 and one time many years ago my father almost burned down our table because he didn't stop adding rum 😂
I somehow expected Ebbers to correctly pronounce Feuerzangenbowle, which - well - he didn't 😂 I am German and absolutely LOVE your channel, you guys are so much fun, really great to see Germany in the "Around the world" series! Your content is awesome, especially considering you are uploading daily at the moment, thank you so much for this Advent calender fun this season, it must have been a ton of work (and fun^^) 😊
Try watching videos from Tasting History - he's American but pronounces all the words in other languages pretty much perfectly. I'm always super impressed by him! He even did Chinese words justice. You can tell he put a lot of time into researching not just the history and ingredients, but also all the pronunciations in various languages so that he says them correctly.
I don’t know why, but I’m doing very well with the Christmas version of these tasting videos. I got 3 out of 4 today and averaging 2. When I was young, my parents subscribed to a service that sent annual Christmas boxes. Each year a different country was featured and they sent a book, an ornament, etc and described how that country celebrated with traditions and FOOD. Your videos reminded me of a warm, fuzzy memory so thank you! Keep them coming.
Woohooooo, not only is my fav James back but the also had the pleasure of trying the Feuerzangenbowle with Mike. My lovely nan always made it for christmas, and now i took over the tradition. My welsh Husband loves it :) Thank you guys, and have a happy Christmas 🎉
We make Feuerzangenbowle each year, and it's a big tradition in my family. As a kid, I remember sitting in the dark room with the whole family talking, enjoying the time together watching the Zucker burn. Frohe Weihnachten /Merry Christmas from Schwabia Germany.
Pan de Jamon - I like the idea. I can also see where it reflects in my Christmas Turkey/Stuffing/Cranberry Chelsea buns a la Paul Hollywood. I've made them every year for nearly a decade and my family have declared them as almost as non-optional as the previous day's turkey and trimmings.
Glad to see Portugal here, even if it's with a dish I don't like at all 😅 Funnily enough, James was not that far off when he thought that pan de jamón was Portuguese, was we have a somewhat similar dish (enriched bread with meats and cold cuts) called Bôla de Carne, which can also be made to use leftover meat and cold cuts.
Thank you so much guys, I have been following you since the breakfast video from the wild. Me and my wife both love you. I am sorry I could only thank you with this less of an amount, but you guys have got us both through some difficult times. You guys rock, and if ever if you feel like name dropping us, it is - Parth and Madhurima. All the best pronouncing those Indian names 😂. Also, if you ever come to Mumbai do contact us. We will take you to the best places here and cook you up some delicious homemade Indian food.
Ooh, so nice to see Feuerzangenbowle!! It is very much a tradition in our household! Just a pity that you couldn’t film how beautiful it looks, because the flames are blue. We always use Stroh 80 (80% alcohol rum) because it is the only rum strong enough to burn long enough. One cup of the resulting drink is enough for everyone though… 😂
The Feuerzangenbowle is a cultive thing. You never drink it without: 1. someone mentioning how a steamengine works. 2. mentioning the need for valerian in the family. 3. remembering how to be a "great student"
This series is amazing and so informative. I love seeing all of the dishes, and especially in the lore and history behind them. I hope it doesn't ever stop!
Love these videos and the playing along taking guesses! Feuerzangenbowle is a great tradition where I live and a nice opportunity to visit and discover the real Munich aside from the overly crowded Oktoberfest. On the same cite the Oktober takes place there is a huge christmas market festival every year (tollwood) that even sells Feuerzangenbowle in special cups with a little plateau on the side for a burning miniature sugar cone that drips into your cup directly (better wait for it to burn down if you want to keep your eyebrows 😅)!
Feuerzangenbowle is actually a really common christmas movie too! Mostly the older generation since its from 1944 but still, very liked by older folks! Also I just learned that Stroh 80 is Austrian. No one drinks it here, it's more of a challenge because of its 80% alcohol and _not good_ taste
This is series is the hardest to see without feeling so jealous of you guys! lol. every dishes looks amazing! thanks for taking such good care of describing them for us !
As a Filipino, it made me happy that Mike got it spot on. Ube-cheese flavor combination has gotten famous in the Philippines a few years ago. You'd find it in breads, cake flavors or just plain jam with cheese. The way Kush made the Puto bumbong is how most Filipinos cook them now. Kudos to Kush!
Oh man! Since James is around for a few videos, I am really hoping we get a kitchen gadget or ingredient review. His review/reaction was always great to watch.
Feuerzangenbowle is a yearly tradition in my family. My parents invite friends over. The event of the Feuerzangenbowle usually happens after a small food intake, nothing special, for january my mother has planned an onion tart. After the food, we switch off all the lights and do the Feuerzangenbowle in darkness, then you can see the blue flames from the alcohol burning. Than of course is a lovely memory of my childhood. Have a look into one of Germanys classic black and white movies called "Feuerzangenbowle", where friends come together and think about the hypothetical idea of one of them going to college (he was schooled privatly) and playing fast and loose with the professors.
This video a day Christmas special has been honestly so lovely thank you guys for bringing good laughs and that festive spirit to the world it really helps getting into the Christmas vibe! All the best and keep up the great work it’s certainly appreciated!
My family's puto doesn't have cheese on it but we've absolutely seen other families who do use cheese on theirs! So awesome to finally get to see one of my family favourites on the show!
Feuerzangenbowle is a blast from the past. I remember my family having it, when I was a kid, during Christmas get-togethers. But it hasn't been a big thing in the last decades. It only now has a comeback on Christmas markets. The traditional way has a special pot and a special frame/shelf above it for the sugar cone. This shelf let the molten sugar drop down at one specific place, rather than from the whole cone like yours.
Puto bumbong is my favourite esp around the holidays! I don’t live in the philippines anymore and they’re hard to find where i live, but i was all smiles and very much kilig when mike got it right
I only managed to guess the last dish coming from Portugal because Max Miller of tasting history did a video making the sugar egg noodles a few months ago!
@@SortedFood I know! So far the only one I’ve been able to guess in the entire series was a Dutch dish (sandwich with hagelslag). So it must be a great feeling when you get one right!
I used to work with alot of Filipinos which has given me several chances to try their food and as soon as I saw the ube and cheese I KNEW it was puto and it's one of my favorites! Nothing will ever beat pancit in my eyes though!
i recognized it in a split second. we were on a campsite 60+ years ago in bavaria and some very nice people made feuerzangenbowl and invited my parents. i’ve never seen my father more drunken than at that occasion 😂
Lovely to see James, and he seems happier and more easy going - but still with a soupçon of snark 😅 These dishes are all great choices! Edited to add: The biggest surprise to me was that Italy and Portugal are only a thousand miles apart, I'm sure I would have figured out but it just seems so close.... Yeah, I live in North America lol

Always nice to see James back and having fun with y'all!
Thank you for letting us play along!
2:36 I guessed Italian as well…
5:32 I don’t like mulled wine, but this is such a fun thing to have on a feast table 🤩
10:27 As an Indonesian, I knew right away where it’s from because we have something similar to that although we don’t necessarily relate it to Christmas.
18:39 These sweetened egg yolk threads can be found in Southeast Asia as well, so I thought it must be from an ex-Portuguese colony, but probably not in Southeast Asia since _puto bumbong_ was already there. The answer nevertheless kinda surprised me 😅
I immediately thought of _kue putu_ as well! And since it's purple in this version, also thought of the Phillipines 😂
YEP - my guesses for the purpley rice-cake dish definitely included Indonesia, though I've not been there (yet?).
We usually eat mostly fish and chicken for the holidays in Portugal, we basically eat pork every other day...
A video every day is SO awesome!!! Been loving it since day 1.
James the best looking and smelling. 😂😂
So nice to have see so much of james again.
Thank you for gracing us with your presence.
Great work guys and Sorted team! Always a pleasure to welcome James back to the channel! ❤❤❤
You guys should totally do a budget Christmas snack episode, nothing fancy, just the pure basics that any normal would have in their pantry.
I somehow expected Ebbers to correctly pronounce Feuerzangenbowle, which - well - he didn't 😂
I am German and absolutely LOVE your channel, you guys are so much fun, really great to see Germany in the "Around the world" series! Your content is awesome, especially considering you are uploading daily at the moment, thank you so much for this Advent calender fun this season, it must have been a ton of work (and fun^^) 😊
That was Simon Whistler level pronunciation.
If someone wants to try to pronounce it, it should sound a bit like this: "foy-err-tsung-en-bo-le". :-)
Feuerzangenbowle can also often be found at medieval themed christmas markets. You are often able to watch it being made in the back of the stall.
The channel is giving madd love to the Philippines and I am here for it. 😍
I mean, what other country starts Christmas in September
@@MuriKakari hahaha truuuuuue
As Austrians we would say the Feuerzangenbowle originated over here. But you used the perfect rum for this drink :D
Does the video totally freeze for anyone else from 16:24 to 17:26?
Yes
Glad to see Portugal here, even if it's with a dish I don't like at all 😅 Funnily enough, James was not that far off when he thought that pan de jamón was Portuguese, was we have a somewhat similar dish (enriched bread with meats and cold cuts) called Bôla de Carne, which can also be made to use leftover meat and cold cuts.
James episodes are the best Christmas gifs by Sorted🎉
Thank you so much guys, I have been following you since the breakfast video from the wild. Me and my wife both love you. I am sorry I could only thank you with this less of an amount, but you guys have got us both through some difficult times. You guys rock, and if ever if you feel like name dropping us, it is - Parth and Madhurima. All the best pronouncing those Indian names 😂.
Also, if you ever come to Mumbai do contact us. We will take you to the best places here and cook you up some delicious homemade Indian food.
Thank you so much 💛
Ooh, so nice to see Feuerzangenbowle!!
You never drink it without:
1. someone mentioning how a steamengine works.
2. mentioning the need for valerian in the family.
3. remembering how to be a "great student"
This series is amazing and so informative. I love seeing all of the dishes, and especially in the lore and history behind them. I hope it doesn't ever stop!
It’s always good times when James is back. I’d love to see him come back full time. 3 chefs and 3 normals full time would be amazing
Hiya James, so great to see your smile! Great fun!
What a great Christmas pressie....Another James video!
So good to have James back! Always love the confidence (even if very rarely wrong :P)
For the Feuerzangenbowle there's also a version, where you use a special slotted spoon and a sugar cube to just make one cup of feuerzangenbowle
Love it how sorted videos always come out around the time I get hungry. Meaning I get to eat tasty food while watching videos about tasty food
Well done to Mike, what a fantastic round! So good to see James too.
Oh man! Since James is around for a few videos, I am really hoping we get a kitchen gadget or ingredient review. His review/reaction was always great to watch.
100% I hope so!
So lovely to have James visiting! 🎉
“It might not need butts” such wisdom from James, as always
@8:30 Get it right! @8:53 Their EXACT reaction haha. Love this channel!
The video freezes at 16:23 and the timer continues running.
My family's puto doesn't have cheese on it but we've absolutely seen other families who do use cheese on theirs! So awesome to finally get to see one of my family favourites on the show!
17:25 between 16:20 and 17:20 the video plays but it’s just a still image. Might want to take a look at your edit
Thank you for featuring puto bumbong!
There is another Christmas food item we call it Bibingka.
It’s great to see how seriously you guys take this game. Mike being happy he got one right is just 10/10.
Getting it spot on is tough!
@@SortedFood I know! So far the only one I’ve been able to guess in the entire series was a Dutch dish (sandwich with hagelslag). So it must be a great feeling when you get one right!
It's always great seeing James back. I bet Janice misses him too. 😂
Merry Christmas to the most wholesome channel on RUclips 🎉
Here for Sorted’s love of Philippine food ❤
Love playing along at home, so far I have 3 points from the first round. Geography and food combined, amazing
Win!
Yea, it's that sugar! It makes you underestimate the amount of alcohol you're actually imbibing
The way Ben pronounced Feuerzangenbowle is just amazing, I didn't know it could be pronounced that wrong, so good job. xD
JAMES CURRIE! Glad to see you on the Channel again ❤ Big up the OG's 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Mr. Currie is back! Great vid to wake up to after working third shift. Cheers gents!
Yay James is back for a video, Always happy to see him!
Heads up SORTED team! On Android Mobile RUclips the video freezes from 16:25-17:25!
It is James after James after James after James, such a treat. Thanks guys! 😀
Love getting these awesome videos everyday!
Maybe in the future you can do a hot chocolate from around the world video!
Ooooo! That’s a great idea!
Yes great idea 😊
