  • This accurate and delightful recreation of the Thompson Trophy racer flew gracefully at Akron, Colorado in 2008. There were 5 Mystery Ships built between 1928 and 1931. They had a top speed of 235 mph, which was faster than the miliary pursuit aircraft at the time. Hundreds of speed records fell to this little racer; piloted by Doolittle, Pancho Barnes and Frank Hawks.

Heck with the 'Like' button... They should have a 'LOVE' button for videos like this! The only thing better would be to fly this beauty! Thank you for sharing!

Walter Beech joined Clyde Cessna in co-founding Travel Air Manufacturing Company In 1924. Travel Air was sold to the Curtiss-Wright Corp in August 1929 but the Travel Air name continued. The name Travel Air brings to mind the A,B, BH and Speed Wing series biplanes.

Love the 'Harmonicats' music (playing "Twilight Time") that accompanies this great footage of an even greater classic plane. Thanks for posting!

Note the sliding windscreen which moves back to almost cover the pilot. This aircraft design dates from Lindberg's Ryan and it shows how much thinking went into streamlining. Thin non-cantilever wings required lots of wire bracing so that the racer could pull heavy G's going around pylons during a race. This Waco was designed to go fast, not for aerobatics so seeing it being looped and barrel-rolled was a real treat.

I just finished my screenplay where the rival to my hero pilot flies a "Mystery Ship". Man you just can't top that name!

Just learned this morning that a Travel Air Mystery 'S', probably Pancho Barnes' airplane, is flying again and has been transferred to the Shuttleworth Collection!

Wish EAA would do another golden age of air racing reunion! Get Mr. Mulligan, Kermit Weeks' Gee Bee Y Z and R2, the Caudron that was there last year and the Super Solution all together for a "race"!

It sounds to me like you may be referring to the Gee Bee.
