Thank you very much Stanley. I have a video that shows how I make my friction polish. I part shellac 1 part boiled linseed oil 1 part denatured alcohol
There is no price value for this level of expertise information. I am quite fortunate to view and learn from your videos. You and a few more mature woodturners are certainly a gift for the inquisitive minds. Thank you.
Oh yes for sure they love catio Byron. We got these 2 as kittens 3 years ago and we were about ready to let them be indoor outdoor cats. The adult cat we had was and they always watched him through the window. Sadly we lost Scooter to a coyote and that ended well over 40 years of indoor outdoor cats for us. There are just way to many coyotes around now. We live close to a nature area and golf course. So I finally broke down and made them this. That was a concern as well but I built it very strong. And do they love it!
Thank you so much for this video. I am a rookie turner with only one year under my belt. I have struggled mightily with high speed finishes and I very much appreciate the education on these alternatives and how beautiful they are. Thank you!
Thanks so much Michele very happy it was helpful. I hope this shows there is not mystery to getting a nice finish. I do know that it a big concern for many. I can hardy wait to get to this point but I do know that every step up to putting the finish on is very important and nothing can be skipped. Thanks for watching, Gary
I think the lacquer is always my favorite finish of yours, Gary. Just always has a nice warm glow to it. The Acks sure does a great job. This video is going to be very helpful to turners for years to come. Great job, buddy! My cat is sitting here watching with me, in between dozing off. I woke him up and replayed the Catio part a couple times. He made his usual, tiny sound he makes when he wants something and then looked up at me, quizzically, like, "hey, I need me one of those!" I wish I had time to build him one. In the mean time, if a box shows up and you hear this little meow coming from it, just consider him on vacation and put him up in the Catio suite! Phil
I also like the Lacquer finish as well. I think I am getting lazy because I seem to be using more Polycrylic. It just goes on so easy it is hard not to use. But today I went back to oil based wipe on poly. Perfect for what I turned giving it a very nice warm look. I was thinking of starting a CB&B...Cat Bed and Breakfast and we will have reasonable rates if he cares to stay. No promise I will send him back because we saw him and he is a cutie. We just do not feel safe letting ours out with all the coyotes around here. Golf course at the end of our dead end street and a huge nature area. We lost our Scooter to one 3 years ago and these guys were kittens so we have never let them out. I do hope more see the video as it seems a lot get a bit worried when it comes to putting the finish on. They should also be using shellac after seeing how great yours looks after you put it on. Take care, Gary
Very good information Gary. All three finishes have their own look. Good to see the differences now. I save this video in a playlist so that I have it at hand if needed. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Kandie, the finish is as important as any part of the project. This process is fairly easy to get a very nice finish. But sanding is very important part of getting that great finish. Best of luck, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 when I used the minwax finishes I like to use the high gloss on the first two coats then go to the semi gloss after, I think it gives a deeper finish. Very similar to the Deft finish.
This was a wonderful side-by-side demonstration of finishes. It will help many woodturners. I usually finish my pieces with shellac or satin wipe-on poly. I appreciate the water based poly dries faster than wipe-on, especially the first coat. I also use Ack's products; they're excellent. For a high gloss finish, I buff the finishes then wax. Your sanding advice is right on. The more time I spend on this, the better it will look. There's no short-cuts here. That's gorgeous walnut and it really deserves a fine finish.
Thank you very much Paul I think sanding is the number one most important thing to getting a good finish. There are a few tricks to making sure of that and I have been thinking on making a video of just that. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Gary for investing the time and energy in creating this informative video. Each finish has is own purpose and luster, all are great. Especially glad you will be using the “platters” in another project.
Thank you for posting this video. I've not been turning long and have been using 2 coats of Myland's Sanding sealer (sanding between coats), abrasive paste and T & T Original for my projects. Now, thanks to your video, I have more options. 👍🏾
Thank you for the through information......I've been using shoe polish and briwax and getting what I thought were good results but this is in another league.....I've still so much to learn.
Thank you Grace, happy it helped. You finish does sound interesting. Not sure if I have heard of using shoe polish. I think if you try any of what I showed you will really like it. Take care... Gary
Thank you Grace, happy it helped. You finish does sound interesting. Not sure if I have heard of using shoe polish. I think if you try any of what I showed you will really like it. Take care... Gary
Thank you so much for this video! I can't even say how grateful I am that you did this! I didn't realize that you need to use some kind of a sealer before the Ack's....Thank you so much Gary!
Thank you Lori. I have always used a sealer first. I have seen others skip the sealer. I am sure the instructions says to use sealer. I have found it gets a better finish by using sealer first. But I also will use it after putting many coats of lacquer or other finishes and then use the abrasive paste and polishing paste. I did that on my last video and it is one of the nicest finishes I have done. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Mark and I have become very fond of the Polyacrylic finish. Although today I finished something with Minwax Wipe On Poly which is oil based. Thanks for watching, Garu
Great illustration of the differences. The Acks does look good without the under coats but the depth of the finishes under the Acks really shows through. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have used a sanding sealer, and then buffed it on the Beal buffing system. The projects turn out nice, but the finish doesn’t seem to last. I like the example you showed using the deft. Now the steps: you sand the finished product to 400 grit. Then how many coats of deft. Then you apply the abrasive, then the paste wax Thanks again
Thank you Tommy! I will use as many as 10 coats of Deft sprayed on. Depending on the wood mostly. If the wood is hard then 4 or coats will do the job. All depends how much I sand between coats. The finish might look very smooth after spraying but when you sand with 400 you will see if it is a little heavy in places. This will give you the most level finish and will show more depth. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, you’re my kinda guy! I painted car’s for almost 40 year’s before I retired. So the knowledge of finishing work is etched into my soul. But I always learn from you. You don’t know how much id really like to meet you someday sit down and talk about turning wood. I think we’d get along well.
Thank you Keith. Painting cats certainly needs attention to details. Pretty much in the prep work. Same as wood. Where are you located? Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks for making this video. I’m just getting starting with woodturning and I’m almost ready to finish a piece that I really like. I’ll try the polycrylic method on some scrap and see how that goes.
Thanks for watching and the information. I have never used brads so I can not speak for it. I know that if I keep buffing the polish with a clean cloth it does not leave a waxy feel. But you do have to make sure you get it polished off. Again I have not tired tung wax and appreciate your input. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Jane and I also like all 3 and depending on what it is going on I will use all 3. Today I am using the Minwax Wipe On Poly which is oil based. Looking at the piece of wood is why I chose the oil based. And I probably will not polish this finish out. I think you will love using the Acks. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Dave and I have a lot of things around here finished in Deft. As a matter of fact I have 2 Walnut boards glued up and made an all around 2 shelf stand in 1963 that are finished with Deft. That is what we used in high school shop class. And glued with good ol Elmers wood glue. Joints still good after all these years and have been in my garage for many years. I plan on making a segmented turning out of them one of these days. Thanks for watching, Gary
This is great stuff Gary. Good to see side by side comparisons of different finish methods. I really appreciate your patient thorough approach. Makes me want to get out there and go to work. And do some videos too. Can't wait for next week. See you soon.
Great video gary I love them all but I think I will try the lacquer one keep them coming have never used polycrylic so will try that in the future thanks again for your very informative videos
1st. Hi Gary, My favourite is the Sanding Sealer and Acks. It has a fantastic sheen to it not a shine. It's just my personal choice and nothing against the other two finishes. Great video Gary with lots of useful information. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw and to me all finishes have a place and that is why I use many different ones. I have not found a 1 size fits all when it comes to putting the finish on. Today I am using Wipe On Poly oil based and I will talk about why on the video. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Gary
Gary, my mind was swirling until you showed the 4th piece with the poly also and it convinced me to go with the Poly. It sure gives a deep finish and just highlights the grain beautifully. I want to give you a big thumbs up for doing this finishing lesson. Man, you used a lot of Acks Sanding Paste & Polish for this demonstration and I know that stuff is not cheap. So thanks for giving us three great choices. No more excuses now!😉
Thank you my friend, I do like my Polycrylic! It really does not take much of the Acks to do the job. I noticed after editing the video I put 4 times as much as is needed on the last piece. What I liked is all 3 finishes go on the same so you can decided on the look you are after. Take care buddy, Gary
Thank you Garth and I am a fan of what Phil does and mix it up with similar pieces. These pieces were perfect for showing the 3 finishes as they looked very much the same. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very beneficial, I've been struggling with the finish on my bowls and this is going to be a big big help. Thanks so much. OH yeah, the lacquer is my favorite.
Thanks so much PJ I am happy to hear that you feel better about the finish process now. The finishing part is very important and getting it right can make or break a turning. But I hope you see it is not all that hard to achieve. Take care, Gary
Thanks so much Garry I am happy it has helped. I think putting the finish on can be a struggle but this is a very easy way to get a great looking finish. Today I am using Wipe On Poly oil based. It works just like the water based and I like it for other reasons as well. I plan on mentioning that in the video I am doing on this bowl. Take care, Gary
I never thought to use Ack's pastes on lacquer base. It really makes lacquer more smooth and shiny. A lot of new tips I have seen in Your video, Gary and I will test them on my next projects. Thank You for this video 👌 It's great. Stay safe my friend. Rav
The fact is, I had a woodshop class in high school in 1950 and learned to use the wood lathe. I still have lamps and bowls I made. Seeing you cutup the shelving boards and make a beautiful bowl was interesting. I continued in woodworking while in the Air Force and beyond. Not until about two years ago did the lathe-bug hit me. I only have a mini, so limited on what I can turn, but have enjoyed segment bowls and much more. Did I email with you a year or so ago about making the stars? That was a great help and I now put stars in the bottom of most bowls as my "signature". I too have used Deft for many years and it's my go-to finish, except for where I use mineral oil and bees wax for a food-safe finish. Thanks for your response.
Thank you very much Norm. Nothing wrong with having a mini lathe. Good to hear you are still turning. Deft lacquer is certainly one of if not my most favorite finish. I do recall an email about the starts and they are easy and fun to make. Nice to hear from you and keep up the great work. Gary
Thanks Jon! They all are my favorites and for certain places and wood. I finish a lot of natural turnings with shellac. Most segmented things get lacquer or Polycrylic. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hard to pick a favorite. Nice work! I'm going to "borrow" your method of using repurposed plastic containers for the water based stuff. No more rusty cans!
Thank you Stuart and I get lots of those little containers as we like yogurt. Some are perfect but some do not stack well. That is how I pick which brand I like LOL Take care, Gary
Thank you John, happy you are liking my work. I like all of the finishes and feel there is a place for each one. I also use other finishes but most of those I do not use the paste on. Take care, Gary
Thanks Gary, great finishing tips buddy! I’ll pick the sanding sealer with acks pastes! Just the right sheen! Great catio!! Well done , take care my friend !
Thank you Bruce, I do like the finish with the sealer and Acks but for segmented turning I choose the other. And I enjoyed making the Catio. These 2 guys have waited 3 years to taste the fresh air. They were kittens when we lost our indoor outdoor cat to a cayote so we never let them go out. So I gave in and built them this even though I was still concerned. They really love it! Take care, Gary
Thank you for the great presentation! I'm still fairly new to turning and struggle with the finishing! I'm a "lacquer" guy with an auto body background, but am going to try the polycrylics.
Thanks Ray, very happy you enjoyed the video. I have repainted sections of cars with spray lacquer. By no means would I call myself and expert in it but I did alright. I am sure you could do a great job with spray lacquer but by all means try the Polycrylic and just wipe it on. After about the 3d coat you will see the rewards in doing so. You may think after the first 1 or 2 coats it is not going to work. But it will! Even did some body work but I used bondo a lot on some of the large patterns I built. It was the fastest way to put in large fillets and create shapes as well. Matter of fact I made a full sized model of the right fender of a Kenworth big rig. It was part of a mold to make a fiberglass prototype before going into production. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Wanda and I got hooked on Deft in a high school shop class. I still have a half gallon of it I have not used because it is easier to buy a spray can than to clean my sprayer LOL. I did buy a sprayer meant for using lacquer and just have not tried it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks for the video Gary, it is filled with a ton of information the will be useful to me and I am sure a lot of others, I have been a lacquer user for years and just need some other methods and this video will certainly be one to refer back on! Cheers Al
Thank you Al and there are so many options for finishes. Today I am finishing a piece up with another one of my favorites. Oil based Wipe On Poly. It gives another look to the piece that I like as well. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks again
Stanley Langford Beaver Creek Creations
Thank you very much Stanley. I have a video that shows how I make my friction polish.
I part shellac
1 part boiled linseed oil
1 part denatured alcohol
There is no price value for this level of expertise information. I am quite fortunate to view and learn from your videos. You and a few more mature woodturners are certainly a gift for the inquisitive minds. Thank you.
Thank you very much Sylive for your very kind words. Much appreicated.
Have fun wood turning and thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks so much for the great info.
Thank you Dean I appreciate you watching,

Lacquer is my favorite for durability.
Yes I also like lacquer as well for that.
Thanks for watching
Oh and I am sure the cats will love being able to partial go outside on the little enclosure. Our get to go out in the enclosed porch.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for all this information. as i am new to turning and want ease of use!
Thank you for watching Cathy and this is real easy for sure.
Gary
Thank you, Gary, for a very informative video!!
Thank you Clayton for watching and commenting. Happy you liked the video.
Gary
I've watched this several times. Good stuff!
Thank you Jim. Happy you enjoyed the video.

Thanks Gary, great finishing tips Great video
Thanks again. Dave
Thanks so much Dave and you can use your favorite sanding paste in place of what I used and it will work as good.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you for the finishing tutorial
Thanks Dave and thanks for watching,
Gary
your finishes are great. I liked the lacquer finish the best.
Thank you Paul and I think this time the lacquer was the king.

Nice finishing tips
Thank you 😊
I think the lacquer is always my favorite finish of yours, Gary. Just always has a nice warm glow to it. The Acks sure does a great job. This video is going to be very helpful to turners for years to come. Great job, buddy!
My cat is sitting here watching with me, in between dozing off. I woke him up and replayed the Catio part a couple times. He made his usual, tiny sound he makes when he wants something and then looked up at me, quizzically, like, "hey, I need me one of those!"
I wish I had time to build him one.
Take care,
Gary
Very good information Gary. All three finishes have their own look. Good to see the differences now.
I save this video in a playlist so that I have it at hand if needed.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Frank and for sure there is a use for each one.

Gary
Thanks for sharing your tips , take care stay safe god bless
Thank you Donald and thanks for watching.
God bless you as well my friend,
Gary
Great info! Thank you for sharing. I never think my finish is nice enough
Thanks Kandie, the finish is as important as any part of the project. This process is fairly easy to get a very nice finish. But sanding is very important part of getting that great finish.
Best of luck,
Gary
They all look good. Matt finish, sanding sealer. If I go by the reflection of the light, polyacrylic.
Thank you Khan, I think they all have a place and it all depends on the wood and the shape created.
Take care,
Gary
Great information Gary, I think I preferred the one done with Deft and Acks.
Thank you and for sure I have to agree with your choice.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 when I used the minwax finishes I like to use the high gloss on the first two coats then go to the semi gloss after, I think it gives a deeper finish. Very similar to the Deft finish.
Thanks, Gary! This was very helpful!
Thank you Billy happy it helped.
Take care,
Gary
This is very good information that I wanted. Thanks a lot, Gray.
Thank you very much Pat, happy it helped.
Take care,

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you Gary for investing the time and energy in creating this informative video. Each finish has is own purpose and luster, all are great. Especially glad you will be using the “platters” in another project.
Thank you very much. There is always a use for little pieces like these.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for posting this video. I've not been turning long and have been using 2 coats of Myland's Sanding sealer (sanding between coats), abrasive paste and T & T Original for my projects. Now, thanks to your video, I have more options. 👍🏾
Thank you Greg. Sounds like what you have been using is a good option as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, Gary, they are all so gorgeous...I love Ack's Abrasive Paste!
Thank you Carol and it sure does the trick!
I like the first one best, then the third, and finally the second.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. On these that is the same choice for me as well.
Thanks again,
Gary
Thank you for the through information......I've been using shoe polish and briwax and getting what I thought were good results but this is in another league.....I've still so much to learn.
Thank you Grace, happy it helped. You finish does sound interesting. Not sure if I have heard of using shoe polish.
I think if you try any of what I showed you will really like it.
Take care...

Thanks for watching,
Gary
They all look great Gary but I do like the Polycrilic finish. Thank you for the informative video.
Thank you Mark and I have become very fond of the Polyacrylic finish. Although today I finished something with Minwax Wipe On Poly which is oil based.
Thanks for watching,
Garu
Great illustration of the differences. The Acks does look good without the under coats but the depth of the finishes under the Acks really shows through. Thank you
Thank you and yes it does look good. I feel there is a place for all kinds of finishes and they all can look good.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have used a sanding sealer, and then buffed it on the Beal buffing system. The projects turn out nice, but the finish doesn’t seem to last. I like the example you showed using the deft. Now the steps: you sand the finished product to 400 grit. Then how many coats of deft. Then you apply the abrasive, then the paste wax
Thanks again
Thank you Tommy! I will use as many as 10 coats of Deft sprayed on. Depending on the wood mostly. If the wood is hard then 4 or coats will do the job. All depends how much I sand between coats. The finish might look very smooth after spraying but when you sand with 400 you will see if it is a little heavy in places. This will give you the most level finish and will show more depth.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for the help great stuff
Thank you Ken and thanks for watching.

Lacquer, Acks paste. Thank you.
Thank you Tom and I think it did come out the best as well.

Very informative and thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏
Thank you and thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I’m in Upstate Ny
Thanks for making this video. I’m just getting starting with woodturning and I’m almost ready to finish a piece that I really like. I’ll try the polycrylic method on some scrap and see how that goes.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. I love using the Polyacrylic. It is easy to use and does a great job.
Gary
I like them all! Ordered some Ack's I can't wait to try it. I use shellac and paste wax right now. I'm excited to try the Ack's pastes.
Thanks for watching and the information. I have never used brads so I can not speak for it. I know that if I keep buffing the polish with a clean cloth it does not leave a waxy feel. But you do have to make sure you get it polished off.
Again I have not tired tung wax and appreciate your input.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you Jane and I also like all 3 and depending on what it is going on I will use all 3.
Today I am using the Minwax Wipe On Poly which is oil based. Looking at the piece of wood is why I chose the oil based. And I probably will not polish this finish out.
I think you will love using the Acks.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great video, informative
Thank you Vern i appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Nice information about wood finishing touches take care.
Thank you Sagar I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Great video Gary. All of your examples look great. I am a big fan of Deft lacquer also. Thanks for taking the time to do a video like this. 👍
Thanks for watching,
Gary
This is great stuff Gary. Good to see side by side comparisons of different finish methods. I really appreciate your patient thorough approach. Makes me want to get out there and go to work. And do some videos too. Can't wait for next week. See you soon.
Thank you Mark and have fun in the shop. Love to see some videos if you do make them.
Take care,
Gary
Great video gary I love them all but I think I will try the lacquer one keep them coming have never used polycrylic so will try that in the future thanks again for your very informative videos
Thank you Daemon and I like both of those finishes about the same. For sure the Polycrylic is worth trying.
Take care,
Gary
Great video Gary! Thank you for these different finishes. They all seem pretty easy!
Thank you Gil and I think they all make very nice finishes.

Gary
Very interesting to see your method and choice of products, all of which gave a good finish :-)
Thank you Brian happy you liked it.

Cheers,
Gary
Take care buddy,
Gary
I think each of these finishes has its place. Hard to pick one. I'm a fan of natural log turning like Phil does. The funkier the better
Thank you Garth and I am a fan of what Phil does and mix it up with similar pieces. These pieces were perfect for showing the 3 finishes as they looked very much the same.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very beneficial, I've been struggling with the finish on my bowls and this is going to be a big big help. Thanks so much. OH yeah, the lacquer is my favorite.
Thanks so much PJ I am happy to hear that you feel better about the finish process now. The finishing part is very important and getting it right can make or break a turning. But I hope you see it is not all that hard to achieve.
Take care,
Gary
Great video! Lots of good information. Thanks for all you do, I've learned a lot!
Take care,
Gary
I never thought to use Ack's pastes on lacquer base. It really makes lacquer more smooth and shiny. A lot of new tips I have seen in Your video, Gary and I will test them on my next projects. Thank You for this video 👌 It's great.
Stay safe my friend.
Rav
Thank you Rav it is sort of like using abrasive paste on epoxy to get the shine. To me it gives it that little bit extra.
Take care buddy,
Gary
Gary
A great video Gary . In some cases I would choose the Lacquer but my favorite right now is Shellac so I would have to go with the Shellac disc .
Thanks Jon! They all are my favorites and for certain places and wood. I finish a lot of natural turnings with shellac. Most segmented things get lacquer or Polycrylic.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hard to pick a favorite. Nice work! I'm going to "borrow" your method of using repurposed plastic containers for the water based stuff. No more rusty cans!
Thank you Stuart and I get lots of those little containers as we like yogurt. Some are perfect but some do not stack well. That is how I pick which brand I like LOL
Take care,
Gary
Thank you! Also just beginning and love your work. I like the sealer and Acks …
Thank you John, happy you are liking my work. I like all of the finishes and feel there is a place for each one. I also use other finishes but most of those I do not use the paste on.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 thank you, Gary! You are a good teacher and I like your demeanor!
Thanks Gary, a great and saveable piece of info. Well presented . :-)
Thanks so much Bryan, happy it helped.

Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great video!👏🏻👏🏻 I always used DEFT I love it.👍❤️
Thank you Wanda and I got hooked on Deft in a high school shop class. I still have a half gallon of it I have not used because it is easier to buy a spray can than to clean my sprayer LOL. I did buy a sprayer meant for using lacquer and just have not tried it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for the video Gary, it is filled with a ton of information the will be useful to me and I am sure a lot of others, I have been a lacquer user for years and just need some other methods and this video will certainly be one to refer back on!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al and there are so many options for finishes. Today I am finishing a piece up with another one of my favorites. Oil based Wipe On Poly. It gives another look to the piece that I like as well.
