I think part of the reason he can switch styles so effortlessly is because not only is he super talented, but he doesn’t seek approval to do it. You either take it or leave it. Plus, he’s so mysterious. He keeps us guessing.
No, it's because of good producers. He's a great singer but a music "style" is all about production. Even the vocals are processed here and if you listen closely there's a backup vocal at certain parts to set the tone right.
@@KaluGaucho10 i don't think that's what @obi was here was talking about tho. i think he talks about the artistry where the weeknd switches "style" in his music, just like kanye. none of them seeks approval from their fans to change "sound/style" and eventually throws people off with the sudden change in character, because that's what great artists do. they seek their own vision and not peoples approval.

But at the end of the day it's pop music, made to appeal, and the Weeknd didn't invent hot water, he just recognised the potential of the whole synthwave thing and I give him major props for that.

Pay attention to 1:19 - 1:23; 1:38 (The way he says tiiiiiiiime); 2:13 the way he flows over those notes is not natural, there is 100% auto tune on that. Autotune can´t be noticed if done right.
