- Uninvited guests at Summer BBQs can cause serious issues. Creeping insects like ants or flying insects like bees and wasps can inject venom when they bite or sting, causing a serious allergic reaction.
“Hymenoptera belong to the class of insects that have 3 pairs of legs, which can be creeping or flying and some have a sting with venom to defend themselves or attack their prey. These include bees, wasps, ants, hornets, bumblebees,” informs Dr Habib Chabane, Allergist in Paris
The reaction can be moderate: the person most often has urticaria (appearance of red welts that itch). This is a normal reaction that does not extend beyond the joint above the bite area. The reaction can also be generalized and severe, such as anaphylactic shock.
A consultation with an allergist will make it possible to test and to implement symptomatic and / or background treatment, but there can be difficulties in testing reliably for insect venom.
