That's exactly why I hate the Stelvio. Drove it once with a K1600 (GTL!) under heavy rain and almost icy conditions and it wasn't fun AT ALL (although I managed to go up without any serious problem... except for the catastrophic weather). Cyclists by the hundreds, buses, vintage and sports cars driven by people who really shouldn't be there judging by their incompetence, tourists who would be well advised to do the same, you name it. There are so many inspiring and scenic roads in the Alps and elsewhere in Europe where you don't have to go through all this ridiculous drama!

stelvio for me will remain something unique, beautiful, a "conquest" like Everest for climbers, but I do not think I would do this route again considering the difficult traffic conditions and the risks that may occur.

Was there 3 years ago, rode up on a rented Honda NC750. Must have been my lucky day since there was very little traffic. The Honda though not having a lot of power was still the prefect bike for this road . It was light and nimble enough to take the switchbacks with ease. As for riding the Stelio on a K1600 or any heavy cruiser bike, that isn’t a good choice. In the video the rider who fell off was being a dick trying to thread though the stopped traffic.

Yeah, I didn't liked it too when I went to the Nürburgring Nordschleife on my '79 XT 500. Or when I drove USA coast-to-coast on my GasGas-Trial...
For everyone who is not fluent in irony: It's a stupid idea to drive the Stelvio with a two-wheeled compact car. (aka K1600)

The guy on the 1600, wasn’t confident at all. He wasn’t balancing clutch, rear brake and throttle, and had both legs down, he couldn’t touch the ground. The main problem was, because of his high vis’ vest, he thought he could jump the queue. He should learn to be patient when all the other bikers are being patient.

If you know what you are doing these switchbacks are super fun. I have been at the Stelvio several times having loads of fun if you avoid the busys times. Many riders have very little experience and never train switchbacks properly - trying to just get through them. Train, make it an „art form“ and you will see how much satisfaction can come out of passing through them swift- and elegantly.

Stelvio seems to be a challenge too difficult for quite some BMW 'pilots'.
Why? Age (of the biker, not the bike)? Weight (of the scrap metal, not the pillion)? Riding skills? I tend to favour the 3rd option.
And I'd like to quote Greg Widmar running the MotoJitsu channel on RUclips: "(riding) Technique over Technology (the bike)".
If you invest (one time) just a little share of your initial cost (to buy the bike) or definitely less than you spend on a yearly basis for insurance, tax, gas, consumables (like tires), service/maintenance... to improve your riding/cornering skills then you'll have much more fun, you will feel safer, and, if you want, you're much faster (in bends/hairpins - not on a straight stretch of the road every noob could go full throttle).
      Happy riding!

Stelvio - overrated, as you see in this video: often crowded (esp on weekend/holiday), nice view back from the top though.
Pretty manageable if you don't try to filter through jams like this guy.
I think his main fault was to not consider the sloping profile of the road which gave ground to his right foot too late to hold the bike. Stopping in the middle of pin curve is super tricky and you must definitely be prepared and stear to lean to the uphill side!

    • @micromymario23
      @micromymario23 6 месяцев назад

I did the Stelvio in 2018 and was amazed at the amount of traffic. Ok, it was the weekend, but it was ridiculous. There were cars, motorbikes, pushbikes, coaches, and minibuses. And clearly also a lot of people that were clueless when it came to navgating such a road. The traffic was constantly coming to a halt. The problem with this as a motorcyclist is when you are going around a very sharp right hand bend, the camber of the road on your inside, completely falls away. The guy in this video should have waited behind the other bike. With such a massive bike, there was no way that he was going to keep it up once he'd stopped.
In my opinion, the pass should be one way only at peak times. There is no fun in riding it the way it is.
