I love First Choice. They were Disco before people used the term. Their music has been sampled so much in House music.
Hip Hop too
Ursula Herring is actually living in my hometown of Clinton, NC. We used to attend the same church and we sang in the choir together. She was the choir director. The last time I spoke with her, she and the group First Choice are back singing together and traveling to different cities for performances.
They are saaaaaangin! I’ve seen them several times in recent years. Ursula and I were from the same neighborhood in Philly, but I didn’t know that when she was with the group. I probably would have gone around there just to catch a glimpse of her!
Snitch😂😂
Smarty Pants reached No10 on the UK singles chart in 1973. Let No Man Put Asunder was remixed and was a major influence on the House Music scene- in fact that remix is considered to be the very first "House" record, a significant moment in the history of dance music culture that links directly to the current dance music scene.
We in Philly loved these ladies! Saw them many times. Our favorites homegirls!!!
The Salsoul Orchestra which was one of the best orchestras of the Disco Era led by Vincent Montana Jr. features First Choice in one of their albums with "Doctor Love" in 1977. This was the long play version. Oh ! Just great !
Listening to some of their songs it seems as though Salsoul could have provided the music also.
Trinidad & Tobago.
West Indies.
You’re absolutely right about that, and want to know why ? The Salsoul Orchestra is “ M.F.S.B. “ = Mother , Father , Sister , Brother , the in-house band of Philly International Records !!! Salsa & Soul = SalSoul !!!
Bought "smarty pants" and "armed and extremely dangerous" on the other side, double hit,and still got the vinyl, now "This is the house we're loved died" massive northern soul stomper. Brilliant songs and vocals came from First Choice, sadly my sister just passed, one of her songs is " Smarty Pants" what a blast we'll have coming out the church.
Doctor Love is one of the all time greats
I gotta say I'm a fan of First Choice...since 1973 when I was 12 and heard 'armed and extremely dangerous on the radio here in uk.also loved 'smarty pants'. Since then I've loved all their records.i really don't understand why they weren't mega popular, Roshell the lead has an amazing voice, and the 'Philly sound' production of their records is fantastic but their records didn't really do that well on the charts.
I was 12 in 73' also. And that song Armed and extremely dangerous scared the wits out me bc at the time I was in harlem n.y. and there were kids getting kidnapped and killed. As a kid I didn't understand the song was about a player, not a killer lol.
I don't think they influenced "techno" so much as disco and house. They probably inspired groups like The Emotions, Sister Sledge, Love Unlimited, and perhaps even the post-Diana Supremes. In the mid to late '70s they were sort of The Supremes of disco, a group beloved by dancers and DJs Several of their cuts are considered legendary: "The Player", "Dr. Love", "Armed and Extremely Dangerous", "Newsy Neighbors", "Love and Happiness" (one of the best dance music re-makes ever done in the '70s), and "Smarty Pants". The Philly Sound ruled on dance floors until Jonh Travolta started flaming it up in Saturday Night Fever. Then it was Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Village People, Sylvester,, Loleatta Holloway, and Chic, among many others.
First Choice is hands down my favorite act to come out of Philadelphia! Smarty Pants, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, The Player, Doctor Love, Let No Man Put Asunder, Love Thang, and Double Crossed are staples in my dance playlist. Rochelle’s voice is iconic, easily one of the most sampled in house music history. Underrated, but there influence is unmatched.
I agree! It's a shame they were never featured on TV ONE'S Unsung!
I wish Rochelle Fleming or Annette would release a book or something. I've always loved this group and wanted to know more. Thanks for making this video!
Another great video. I love this channel because I learn about new artists and interesting facts about them. Keep them videos coming.
This is the house where love died was also a floorpacker in the U.K in the 70s. A northern soul classic ❤
Thank you for posting !
My favorite female group. OMG they made some great jams that I still rock today. I know they were popular in NYC.
Didn't they sing "Doctor Love"?
Yes they did.
And they did " Aboy name junior" my favorite was " more than before".
don't know why it wasn't included in this video
Doctor love was a monster hit
Yes and it is still my favorite of all their tracks (the long club version).
Thank you for show casing this group. They're dance tunes use to be big hits in California clubs where I resided at the time.
First Choice merece mais reconhecimento público e na indústria musical, sou fã e me orgulho disso❤
I learn something new, with every video of yours. 👌
I graduated from high school in 1973 when Smarty Pants came out. I thought these were some sexy woman. I found their CD years ago at the Dollar Store in Durham, N.C. I still have this C.D. to this day living in New York City. Philly have produced a lot of black male and female artists.
My Aunt is Joyce Jones

The Tom Moulton remix of Armed and Extremely Dangerous is really good
