Those random explosions are puffball mushrooms. Starting in version 0.7 those explode randomly, apparently it's an exaggeration of how they really spread their spores. During actual gameplay it's just confusing to hear many, many explosions per day.
I am quite a big fan of Tomat, but it can be pretty grating when he goes on rants about backseating when he purposefully plays every game extremely suboptimally for The Bit. Like a lot of people who don't know this guy and just tune into the stream are naturally going to have that reaction
I don't know how Tomato makes this game look so easy when dialing in planets. I've tried to do this game so many times, and I find the interface so clunky. And on top of that, I find dialing in the planet coordinates completely impossible. One little teen motion of my mouse wheel and the frequencies just fly out of control and I can't stop them from moving. I've tried for hours to tune in a single signal and I can't figure it out, even following the instructions. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The other problem is that when you're near the controls, a big box appears on the controls but you can never figure out what control you're using. The number of times I had one dial clicked on only to see the other numbers fly out of control when moving my mouse wheel infuriates me. I want to love this game. It looks so interesting in so many ways, but I can't understand what I'm doing wrong.
You can set it to +/-1 (or other number) and just wait for it to get to, or close to, 100% and then click the green button to the left of the knobs to stop it. It might be easier than using the scroll-wheel? And if you get a big box, and it's round(?) then you might have the "action-wheel" toggled in the Experimental settings?

Pretty sure you can change by how much you tune the calibration, so that you can fine tune it
you can rebind it to another button if the scroll wheel is too awkward
Late reply, but you can also upgrade filter size. It makes the window to hit 100% larger.
