- I've had the Harbor Freight Motorcycle Trailer for 5 years and really like it. Harbor Freight no longer sells the trailer but Northern Tool sells it as item 57762. It is the same trailer with some upgrades.
I have some cosmetic issues with the Harbor Freight trailer and some extra money so I decided to get the Northern Tool Motorcycle Trailer.
In this video I unbox the Northern Tool Motorcycle Trailer, compare it to my Harbor Freight trailer and describe the differences.
A year ago I reviewed my Harbor Freight trailer and it is my most popular video. You can view that video at • We Love Our Harbor Fre...
Here is a video about repacking or replacing the wheel bearings • Replacing or Repacking...
Hope you enjoy the video.
I did an in depth video about our Harbor Freight trailer and modifications we made in this video: ruclips.net/video/zJyjQSob7DE/видео.html

All trailer tires were all traditionally rated at 55 mph. They were all marked ST for special trailer. The specal part is that they were never tested at more than 55. Even then, that rating is for max weight at I think 75% of max air pressure. Its been a while sense I had to keep up. Speed rating is based on weight flexing the sidewall creating heat at speed. An ST tire is fine at higher speeds at lower weights. The US just didn't test them for it until recently. The new system now allows testing trailer tires above 55, but a lot of manufacturers have not retested. Their main market does not require it. The rim sticker is probably a hold over from the older testing as well. Comparing speed rating today is a pain with both systems in circulation. As long I am not pushing that max rated weight on a tire, an its aired up properly, I don't worry about speed rating at legal speeds. For my bigger trailers that are pushing the weight limits of trailer tires, I just bought light truck tires. That upsets people to because they think ST tires are tested to be better on trailers, when in really thy are just tested to a lower standard, or were anyway.
I agree with everything you said. I've had two ST tires explode on me. Both times they were significantly under the weight rating and had good air pressure. On the 2nd one I had just weighed my rig at Flying J and had the receipt. I kept the shredded pieces and filed a warranty claim. The Chinese manufacturer paid me $3,000 for damages to my 5th wheel. Light Truck tires load range E is the only way to go with trailers and 5th wheels. Been doing it since my 1st ST tire exploded in 2002. The 2nd one was less than a year old and I thought I could get a few more months out of it. Nope. There is a reason we call then Chinese bombs.

Thank you for the review, I want one to pull behind my 2021 VW Tiguan for camping gear. It has terrible tow capacity, less than 1000lbs, but this looks like it will do what I need it to!
I want to get one of these to tow for my miata on local camping trips, would be perfect!
I added a flashing brake module to the back to my Goldwing. GS-100A is the part number and I wired it up to a third brake light. It’s cheap insurance to help keep from being rear-ended.👍
This was really informative and helpful!
Thanks for watching!
I would recommend a cargo net for inside the trailer and upgrade the tires to 14” high speed. I’m not sure I would want the trailer to stay attached with safety chains if it decided to part ways…
I have a large piece of luggage I use (with wheels) and it sits in such a way that it does not move around. I am happy with the tires. Regarding the chains, I think they are probably required in most states for safety. I connect the trailer to the tow hitch with a 3/4 inch bolt, large washers and clip pin. If that thing gives way I have bigger problems 🤣. Thanks for watching.
Yes in both the states I've lived in you are required by law to have two safety chains rated to hold the max gvw of the trailer. Also if a trailer gets away from you causing injury or death the driver of vehicle is held responsible.
Also I'm sure your correct that the speed limiting is a lawyer thing. That rim and hub are not going to give out at 75 or even 85mph, only real limiting factor is the tire and possibly cheap bearings. All U haul trailers also are limited to 45mph, though your not likely to see people actually driving that slow. I'm a mechanic from a family of mechanics, doesn't make me a trailer expert but that's my opinion on it.👍@@OurRetirementAntics
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching. I love our trailer and am on a 4,000+ mile trip with it right now.
@@OurRetirementAntics I am picking up my trailer today, from my local Northern Tool store.
Id recommend removing the leafs. I have the 40"x40" trailer that i set up to haul my motocross bike. The whole thing total goes to about 400-450lbs including trailer and bike weight and it had no movement out of 2 leafs. So I removed one and now it only has the leaf with the eyelet and slipper and now the trailer doesn't bounce all over the place as I tow it. You move less weight so youd be even safer doing that I'd imagine.
I know people do that and I have thought about it. But I don't have any problem with bouncing so I just left it. Thanks for watching.
@OurRetirementAntics if no issues then yea, leaving it's the smart move... my trailer was going skyward on every expansion joint on the highway
Congrats on the new trailer Bobby! I'm finally flying to Houston to pickup my Silvia next week after being in storage since December and having my knee operation. I can't wait to ride her thru north western Louisiana and the beautiful Ozarks in Arkansas all the way home to Montreal taking nothing but backroads. Are you planning any trips soon? Take care.
Great news. Hope the weather cooperates. I hate to ride in hot weather and humidity. We will do some riding in the mountains of NC this fall. I am also planning to take another long cross country ride next spring to finish my Oregon Trail ride. Be careful.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I was wondering about the trailer tongue. What size tubing is it? I would like to get a longer one so I can stretch the trailer and build a kayak rack on it. Thanks!!
Its about 2 inches by 2.5 inches. It is made in China so the actual precise measurement is probably metric. But my numbers are close. It is not round. Thanks for watching!
The new trailer seems to be higher. Any concerns about higher center of gravity?
If it is higher, it is not much. I should have compared the heights. However it still tracks solid and I have had no problems with it.
Nice video. Think I'm going to go the same route. However, I was wondering with the taller trailer wheels if you'll be able to pull the trailer level. Seems like the trailer would be at a downward angle to reach the Goldwing trailer hitch. Also, wish someone would approve my 40 to phoenix request. I live in NC as well. Cheers
I didn't really notice. It handles fine. Regarding 40 to Phoenix, did you submit a request on Facebook? I really don't know if there will be another organized ride again. With GWRRA no longer around, there is nothing in Phoenix to go see. There was talk about an Alaska trip but then COVID hit and I have heard nothing since them. Thanks for watching.
I did submit it via FB. I read that the GWRRA isn't around any more, but figured the folks in NC still got together for other rides. Maybe the group needs to be renamed, "40 to AnyWhere", LOL. Regarding the trailer, I've been holding off hoping that it goes on sale. You had mentioned that you got it at a discounted rate. I may have to bite the bullet and spend the $699.@@OurRetirementAntics
55 gallon drum, steel or plastic is a thought.
So, if the "rims" and not the tires are only rated for 55mph, are you going to replace the rims? A lot of our NC interstates have 70mph speed limits.
Steel is steel. I can't see how speed would have any impact. I have replaced wheels on a RV because they were rated for a lower pressure than I needed. Maybe I am wrong, but I've had no issue. I am more worried about the speed rating on the tire.
When you mention upgrading the tires and bearings, where do you get them and do you need any special tools for the bearings, like a puller of some kind ? Thanks !
You can get tires from Northern Tool. I get the bearings from Amazon. No special tools required. I did another video where I replace and pack the bearings with grease. Check it out and thanks for watching.
what year is the harbor freight trailer?
I bought the one from Harbor Freight around 2019. The one I have now and in this video was purchased in the summer of 2023. Thanks for watching.
was that thing road rated?
Yes for car tow or motorcycle tow. Thanks for watching
What is the width between the two fenders?
32 inches to the inside of each fender. 45.5 inches to the outside of each fender.
if the rim cant hold the tire on at 75 mph the result is the same as the tire not being able to run at 75 mph
That rim will hold up way higher then the tire as long as it doesn't get all rusted up in 20 years time
