Grouw is a village that resides under the town of Leeuwarden, the capital of the Dutch province of Friesland.
This report starts with a procession of the local Frisian population, who march behind the harmony band. Traditional Dutch Oliebollen are sold at the fair and we see a merry-go-round. From the harbour, the camera takes a picture of the Pikmeer.
Later on in this film we also see a procession of the local population with the harmony in a crowded street. There are detailed shots of its conductor and the musicians as well as children with castanets.
Later on we see typical Dutch sailing boats as they leave the harbour for the Pikmeer lake where a sailing competition takes place.
Spectators observe the spectacle in rowing boats and from various other ships like the "Grouw" and the "Piet Hein" as well as by crowds along the shore,
Folk games include boys who climb through hanging barrels and girls who crawl through all sorts of obstacles.
Towards the end of the film we see a street shot with a parade by the harmony band and among other the local "Gymnastics association".
Many passers-by wave to the camera, Children cycle on the quay and the film ends with a pan past elderly gentlemen on a bench.
This film has been meticulously restored, speed-corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of the latest video software that uses Artificial Intelligence to reconstruct facial features, object contours, details and much more!

Nearly 100 years ago! WoW! Two generations have passed since then, the boys long gone as old men.
Easily some of the best film preservation work any of us have had the pleasure of viewing. Congratulations on another masterpiece.

When I watch old film footage like this, or even old stills, I can’t help but think of them as ghosts. They came before us, walked the same streets, once lived, breathed, had similar dreams, similar hopes. And, through the magic of film, they are immortal.

Whoever the filmmaker was, he certainly had an eye for interesting and beautiful views, my favorite being the sailboats passing by, viewed through the large windows of the restaurant. The people at table don’t seem to be aware of them at all, even though the boats look so close to the windows that food and drink could have been passed through them, had they been open! I wonder if some of this illusion could be from the 3-D process or the colorization, or if the restaurant was really so close to the water! Anyway, this is such a wonderful film, and I’m so grateful you did the work to bring the people alive for us, for free! Yours is one of the few monetized channels that, when ads appear at any time in your videos, I let them run all the way through. It’s a pittance, I know, but you have no idea how much I hate ads!! Thank you again and again!

Eendracht en tevredenheid. Een heerlijke vrije dag temidden van wat anders een volle werkweek was. Geen wasmachine, geen koelkast, geen stofzuiger en geen tv. Velen nog geen radio, telefoon of elektriciteit, al zou dat snel veranderen.
Grotere gezinnen waren de norm, sterfgevallen door tbc hoorden nog bij het dagelijkse leven. Maar toch, als je die eendracht ziet, krijg je er een apart gevoel van.
Mijn oude moeder (die uit een gezin van 15 komt) zegt dat het vroeger beter was. Dat kan ook liggen aan het feit dat mensen de neiging hebben hun jonge jaren positiever te herinneren omdat ze toen jong waren. Ze zegt "nu moeten we allemaal meer. Vroeger was het wel hard werken, dat doen mensen nu trouwens ook maar een beetje anders, maar dingen leken simpeler en duidelijker. Tegenwoordig word er veel teveel verwacht van mensen, dat ze honderden rollen moeten vervullen." En ze zegt dat ze te doen heeft met de huidige jeugd, het effect van social media, onhaalbare schoonheidsidealen, huizenprijzen voor starters, onduidelijkheid voor jongeren wat betreft opleiding en werk, etc.
Ze houd het goed bij met de technologische ontwikkelingen. Ze zit vaak op haar smartphone. Terwijl zij vroeger geen tv, geen vriezer (of ze wel of geen koelkast had weet ik niet meer, waarschijnlijk niet want ze had het over vlees wecken), geen stofzuiger en geen wasmachine hadden.
Ik vroeg aan haar of het echt zo was dat ze het vroeger beter was, ze had namelijk polio gehad en daar erg onder geleden en haar moeder verloren toen ze 14 was. Maar ze was serieus dat haar jonge jaren toen ze nog bij haar ouders woonde haar meest gelukkige jaren waren.
Ik krijg het gevoel dat ik hier elk moment Hielke en Sietse voorbij kan zien varen.

Groeten uit Nederland! The boys seem to be handling "kleppers", a primitive musical instrument, mainly two peaces of wood that are slapped togethers, a bit like castagnettes.
@@Rick88888888 Bedankt! Heel interessant! Ik vindt het mooi hoe enthusiast deze jongens bij de zaak zijn. Het lijkt zelfs als of deze kleppers verschillend groot zijn, dus verschillende geluiden maken. Weet je of deze kleppers nog ergens gebruikt worden?

@@Rick88888888 Ja, die met dat bordje ken ik! Er was een op zolder in mijn geboortehuis. Mijn Vader vertelde mij dat de Messdiener (choirboys) daarmee op Goede Vrijdag door het dorp liepen en de mensen naar de kerk riepen. Want de klokken van de kerk waren natuurlijk in Jeruzalem 😁
