I was/am in a union as a aviation mechanic. I retired out two years ago and on the retired roll of my local union. Some information you stated is incorrect, strike pay is not full wages but in the IAM it is $175.00 a week and it was raised from $125.00 after the last strike ten years ago. Also as you know benefits are negotiable by the union and the company. Union dues are normally about the cost of two hours pay due every month so if you make $25.00 a hour the dues would be $50.00 a month. The IAM is in a lot of the automotive shops and the one I was in aviation and you can get more information at the IAM website. The biggest thing is should you join a union and that all depends on the person and what they desire. Most places can fire you at will meaning for no reason stated, if you fired from a union shop they have to follow a precise procedure and process. Advantages of union shops is the pay is generally higher and for the most part the benefits packages are set by the union contract which are generally much more generous then in a open shop. Being in or not in a union all depends on the person. I was union as I worked in a union shop and it was part of the package I accepted when I joined the company I worked in. Identify issues affecting everyone so when negotiations come, you have a list of priorities to show your leadership- not them begging you to fill out a bargaining survey. The fact is a union is a member tun organization that can hire lawyers, business agents but ultimately youre the expert in your job, and you should be part of the bargaining team. It’s should be clear you’re there yo collaborate with your employers- that means finding ways to save money for the company or government that can in turn help you negotiate for higher wages. Like he said, a company or even govebrmebt has a budget .. and you have to understand what that budget is in order to negotiate for higher wages or benefits.
I think it helps in the public sector. I've worked as a mechanical Laborer in a commuter railroad run by local government. Basically we already got great benefits/retirement but our pay was much below comparable jobs at other transit agencies. We were able to negotiate for better pay and cost of living raises, and not much else. I was promoted to another job which is non-union now - same district and I make a little more, receive cost-of-living raises occasionally and probably have a better working relationship with management than when I was union. In this particular job there is only 2 of us, and there really isn't any benefit to unionizing. To me it makes more sense when you're a part of a larger group of employees.

I’ve worked union (teamsters) for a while... hated it! My father worked union (shipyards) for decades. Every strike you can make a few bucks on the picket, OR they may try to get you on the “extra board” in a sister assignment. Dad would work the longshoremens. But it was always lean on a strike. I had to wait an extra 6mo for my first car when I was 16. Dad was on strike. I handed mom my car fund at week 5 when money went scarce. They paid me back but it took a while....yeah never heard of a union paying wages on a strike.

I don't know if there are any unions that pay full pay. We are on strike right now and are getting 275 a week, just bumped up from 250. However if we get laid off we do get unemployment and sub pay which makes it about 85% of your pay. Always good to have representation and collective bargaining, it's the only thing keeping the middle class alive. If we didn't get the pay and benefits that are negotiated , do you think any employer would give them to you out of the goodness of their heart? the only reason they do is to compete for decent employees.
I'm a Union Firefighter and have been one for 20 years. The main purpose for us is working conditions. We have collective bargaining, where we have the Union which represents the firefighters and the municipal government we meet and negotiate wages and benefits and have a mutual agreement called a contract that normally lasts for a few years. The contract is binding and cannot be altered during the contract time frame, unless both sides have agreed to. There have been times where we have had the city attempt a massive over reach and violate the contract, or a inconsistent discipline not aligned with past practices. During those times the Union has saved jobs. At other times I have seen the Union be its own worst enemy and loose a benefit due to an offer not being totally our way due to a few stubborn individuals. On a whole I recommend being in a Union. One last thing is we are not allowed to go on strike per civil service law however we can picket, post billboards, do news interviews, and partition citizens for support during the disagreement however, we will not walk off the job.
Best thing to do is read the contract that the union has with the company you're looking to work for and decide if you like it. The contract dictates everything, pay, vacation time, benefits, retirement, disciplinary action procedures limits, you name it. Contracts very a lot, some are strong and others are a joke. I've been a union engineer for 16 years and counting and I can't stress enough, read and know your contract. If you work in a good paying shop and it's union, you'd be better served join the union, otherwise you're throwing away benefits the company must pay the members. My full-time job is not union, and I wouldn't want it to be ever. I'd rather negotiate my own salary and benefits, and have opportunity to move up based on merit. Is it always "fair"? No, but I continually go to school, get certifications, etc. to make myself valuable to my current employer, or the next employer if needed. I also work a part-time gig that is unionized, and it's fine as a part-time gig, but I would not want to deal with such in my full-time career. In my experience, the union seems to uplift those who don't want to work very hard, and hold back those with work ethic and some ambition. I can see where at one time unions protected workers from exploitation, and now I just think union big wigs get wealthy off the union member dues, and the union does nothing for those of us on the job.

Michael if you have three jobs you've missed the point completely . One good union trade job takes care of your retirement your insurance your annuity and in many cases a saving plan , we called ours the vacation fund . Every year we vote on our raise and every four years we vote on our contract . Unions aren't for everyone however I've never thought I'm sure sad I can stay home and get paid with benefits since I retired . To be honest it lets me hang out with my grandkids something I couldn't do it I was still working .

@@dondubry410 I get paid a GREAT wage in my full-time job. I don't need a second job, I work extra because I want the money to save and invest. The union just helps the lazy deadbeats keep a job and hold back those of us with some ambition. I actually even have a 3rd part-time gig that is contract that also pays far better than the union job. All the union leaders do is make money off of workers for themselves.

Michael if you have three jobs you've missed the point completely . One good union trade job takes care of your retirement your insurance your annuity and in many cases a saving plan , we called ours the vacation fund . Every year we vote on our raise and every four years we vote on our contract . Unions aren't for everyone however I've never thought I'm sure sad I can stay home and get paid with benefits since I retired . To be honest it lets me hang out with my grandkids something I couldn't do it I was still working .

You’ve provided a strong case argument. One that could also be seen myopic. Unions serve a purpose, no doubt. That doesn’t mean that they all hold value. This is a very dependent and multivariable topic. Unions aren’t everyone’s savior. Not all of them are/we’re supported by the mafia. We can agree to disagree. There’s no winning for either one of us.

Henry Ford opened trade schools and then wrote them off on his taxes. You know, the same kind of trade schools that would then produce mechanics that could work on his floor. Some of that evil socialism but in America, socialism is okay as long as it’s for the wealthy not for regular people?
Al Capone gave the schools of Chicago milk so the children were less likely to develop rickets.
Henry Ford opened up libraries on college and university campuses so that he could write off on his taxes and have his name on them. More evil corporate Socialism and a vanity project all rolled into one.
Al Capone opened up soup kitchens all over Chicago to make sure people didn’t starve to death during the Great Depression.

Show up for the quarterly meetings.
Find out which shop Stewart is going to vociferously defend your job and make sure that’s the shop Stewart that you call for if you’re ever called into the office.

Some unions are unnecessary like grocery stores, if you are skilled labor worker like a welder or truck driver the benefits are great
Non-union jobs do tend to have more opportunities for full-time hours and overtime

I've never been evicted and have gotten the manager at my last apt to speak with places directly to recommend me. I had to get roomates. That's without kids, a car note, or college debt. An education would be nice but most of us can't afford the classes. No one I work with can afford to be a home owner. These companies are the extortionists. Go ahead and tell me why I shouldn't be able to live off my job.
