Prince was there to receive an award from the NAACP that night and he didn't have to share the stage with anyone but he did. He invited Morris and Sheila to perform the hits he wrote for them and again he didn't have to because he had so many hits of his own. I still smile when I see then Senator Obama and Michelle in the audience dancing. Who would have thought just a few years later he would become President of the U.S. and during his second term Prince performed for him at the White House! There is a nice letter at Paisley Park that President Obama sent to the family when Prince passed. Great recommendation and congratulations to you on your 1 year RUclips Anniversary!!

Great way to cap off the 1st year! Prince presented a large spectrum of what he's gifted audiences with over the course of his long career: MPLS funk, old school soul, his brand of R&B, his svengali-like writing & producing for other artists, and a touch of his prowess on bass & guitar. I suppose he could have done a short stint on drums too, but Sheila and J Roberts were in the house. Támar Davis was the female vocalist, so I guess that Prince displayed his role as a mentor, too.

But Thank GOD for His Music that will be Here for all Time! What a Talent! To me the #1 Best That’s EVER done it!!! His Name is PRINCE…..HE IS SO MISSED! Elvis, Micheal, Prince, those 3 will never be forgotten….but Prince Wrote, Produced, PLAYED THE Music, Sang&Danced without missing a beat…from my Youth till my Adulthood, the Albums, the Concerts,& Movies, Simply Amazing, but there was nothing “simple” about Prince Rogers Nelson….Oh by the way Morris Day’s side Man’s Name is Jerome Benton! Thanks so much, Love&Blessings to you&yours 🎸🎸🎸✌️🦇🦇🦇🦇

A beautiful performance, its a very emotional video as Prince was so giving to other artists whilst paying tribute to artists gone from curtis Mayfield and a nod to James brown and Larry Graham when prince got on the bass and of course the mighty santana at the end,A beautiful way to showcase both what prince had given and the influences he loved and admired.Still upsets me that prince is no longer with us 2 c how much he is loved and respected,Thankyou for keeping both his music and memory alive with ur wonderful channel and giving a nod to all the artists u review from a excellent musical perspective.Hope ur on the mend and just positivity and good vibes sent ur way,Love and respect to all whom watch ur channel from around the world

Congratulations on your one year anniversary, bravo! I love this performance too, great reaction video. Prince was bestowed with many gifts and he made the most of them. I think of Prince in terms of Maslow's pyramid of needs which led him to self-actualization --> "air, music, water, food". Go back to his first song "For You", this was his manifesto. All of this and more is for you / With love, sincerity and deepest care / My life with you I share.

Congratulations on attending your first Prince concert! It may only be 12 mins but it feels like 2 hours doesn't it? 😂 Sherylanne wasn't playing when she sent you this request!
What an apt way to mark 1 year.
I love this performance as there's just so much content in there. A litany of influential artists, many of whom are mainstream but perhaps not their most well known songs. It gives everyone room to breathe the songs and put a stamp on them.
It's hilarious to me to see who is in the crowd. A pre-president Senator Obama, Kanye, Questlove, Oprah.... The NAACP Awards is Prince playing to the culture and he looks a little shy at times (strange thing to say I know) because he closes his eyes for a fair stint of some songs. Little does he know that everyone in that room is in awe.
And more than that, the folks who think they are too cool for school are made to look positively uncool... I'm looking at you, Kanye! 😂 (and to think this clown had the nerve to say he was the GOAT just a few years later... Anyway I digress)
The potency of Morris Day and those Time songs is a wonder to behold. And to see Prince just drift back and play accompaniment when other talent is on the stage is a wonderful thing to see. It says a lot about the maturity he found in those mid-2000s.
Great suggestion, Sherylanne! Absolutely nailed it for the perfect 1 year anniversary performance. 💜

@@chica4530 I hear a lot of talk about the black community 'turning on him' mid to late 80s. There's no hint of that 20 years later at these NAACP awards.
He was merely misunderstood at the time as his music moved through various genres...

SoulAd, great review of the reaction there. You captured the moment perfectly IMO. There are of course many memorable award show performances and guest appearances on TV shows such as Ellen, Leno, Arsenio, Saturday Night Live, and a ton of international ones of which I was fortunate enough to go to three of them here in France. This one, however, and the ALMA Awards are my favorite TV performances where he performs various snippets of tunes (a caveat though, of the very beginning of his performance at the 1995 American Music Awards with an entrance like no other one can do, the moment he pulls off the sheet covering him and goes from the splits to strutting down the stage chewing gum before he starts dancing with the back-up dancers slowly syncing up with him. Just genius.).
I've suggested to Bryan to do the ALMA and I hope he does that one down the line.

I could tell you were very into that performance. Jerome is Morris’s sidekick. I just saw an interview where he was talking about Prince never sleeping. Everyone was on call that worked with him and get calls in the middle of the night sometimes. They didn’t really have an outside life. Susan Rogers and Peggy McCreary talk about it too. That’s why they only lasted a few years because of burn out. Another reason Prince learned to run the equipment to record himself. He knew most people couldn’t keep up with him. Mayte said that on their honeymoon in Hawaii they played a show. She said she thought they were going to have a relaxing honeymoon. Prince was trying to hide the posters from her that they were performing that night. Congrats 👏 on your first year.

Bryan, there's another performance from the ALMA awards 2007 (American Latino Media Arts) which highlights Sheila - it has that Latin Jazz feel with the drums and horns. Prince thinks about the audience he's performing for and tailors his set to them. This was Sheila's tribe. Trivia: Sheila's father & uncle played in Santana's band at one time.

I love the way he just smooth transitions from 1 song to another like they all blended together so well. That was a Larry Graham bass solo he did. According to Jesse Johnson (Guitarist of The Time) The Glamorous Life was originally intended for a Vanity 6 Album. The Suit he’s wearing was the cover for the 3121 album.
