We don't really know at what point it was cut, but my opinion is that it was probably around during the manhack arcade era of the beta, since the Combine actually seemed to care about how entertainment could be used against humanity at that point in development.

Space Banshees might have a hard time against anything more than the standard TIE, but I think where the Covenant really have an advantage is their boarding capabilities. The Tick (their standard boarding craft) can carry a whole unit into battle and can puncture through the hull of a vessel. Covenant ground forces, especially the Elites and Brutes, are also superior to the Imperial Stormtrooper. And I don't think I even need to mention how poorly they'd fare against a group of Hunters. However the Covenant has a slight disadvantage in space combat. They have very strong shields, comparable to most in Star Wars, but they have to disable sections to fire weaponry, unlike deflectors in Star Wars. This means a few good hits in that window could knock out a CCS's weapons pretty easily.
