Mariko was depicted as being a bit worried about his decision to commit suicide in the novel. The hint of a romance was planted early. They had a full blown love affair in both the novel and original series and that included even declarations of their love for one another. I very recently watched the original series and then watched the new series. I read the novel afterwards. I enjoyed the original series a lot more than the new series. I enjoyed the novel more than the original series.
