Hey Laurie, I just read your memoir DO YOU DREAM IN COLOR? I do believe you when you say you know what colors are like. I have a type of schizophrenia and cannot work right now and I went to a music college. I failed out of the college but today I am practicing guitar every day. Color has changed for me in recent years and people think it is my illness. I don't know maybe it is but I feel they are greatly improved. People with my illness have a chemical in their brain that is similar to mescalin. I don't know if you'll get this but thanks for writing your book, I enjoyed it!!
I recently had privilege of hearing her sing this song, one of my top favorites, in a 100-seat venue. She sang all 7 verses, including the two rarely-heard ones with which she closes this performance. Almost as impressive as her voice are her stage presence and her ability to read the audience, despite being blind from birth.
As a lyric soprano, I would suggest not relying on the vibrato so much. You have a really rich tone; however, when you get into the upper octave (E5-A5) you lose control and there is a loss in performance. All natural high notes have a subtle vibrato, but don't force it. Let the note flow through you and the vibrato will come naturally at the end. A lot of sopranos and mezzos have issues with vibrato, and other than that, your performance is amazing. I am curious, what is your natural range? I'm guessing E3-C6? Your middle voice is definitely strong. The last note at the end needed more support; I recommend lightening the amount of breath you use on the other notes. I am glad I got to see this video, because you really did do an amazing job. I hope you aren't offended by my criticism; I find that you take it with a grain of salt, as it may or may not help you, and we could simply have stylistic differences. Anyways, please upload more videos, because I really do enjoy your voice!
Love this song. That green dress is FABULOUS missy!
