    Somebody, please develop an app that shuts the Not So Smart phone off when the user tries to use portrait mode for non-portraits. It is worthless.

    Slewing without riggers out is dangerous. Rule of thumb, do not slew off center without riggers. It can tip over..

    So cool to see this historic machine still operational ,when I 1st started working construction as a laborer in 1970 the company I hired in with had 2 cable drive machines still operating as a drag line and a digger ,I'm betting the control panel looks like an octopus with a dozen levers like an old Pettibone.

      I ran an Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecking Derrick in the 80’s, and it had a control WALL! Crazy difficult machine to operate until you learned it! Sadly, Norfolk Southern scrapped all their derricks years ago in favor of contractors with sideboom bulldozers. The Derrick jobs were money making things! When you left the shop to go to a derailment, you might not be back for a week or more, and the pay just kept piling up! Great times, but damn hard work!

    Nice stuff. Very rare to see a unit like this still functioning. I believe this is a diesel conversion that started as a steam powered crane and was probably originally made in the 1920's or there about. Convert to desiel probably happened sometime between the 1950's to 1970's when most diesel conversions for wrecker cranes were made. I could be wrong but I think this unit has only a 200 ton capacity. These cranes had a transfer case in the carbody that was powered from the upper works. The transfer case powers the trucks via a mechanical driveshaft. So these units were mechanical drive, they did not have electric powered traction motors like the diesel electric MOW locomotive cranes. The mechanical drive was geared really low so they only had a top speed of about 5 mph max.

      Makes sense, a lot of steam traction engine had diesel conversions. I can’t see any legs on this one? Are they on a separate truck?

      @@teamidris The outriggers telescope into the four corners of the frame. Most of them ran in and out, up and down with huge air impact wrenches. The outriggers were one of the most labor intensive parts of Derrick work. The crane would be positioned to begin the rerailing process, extensive wood blocking stacked up under each outrigger, and the first lift made. Typically, it would then be decided that the Derrick needed to be moved forward three feet, so the blocking would be knocked down, a level spot dug out 3 feet ahead, and the blocking reconstructed! This was done on each corner time after time for sometimes days! And the amount of blocking used on each corner was equivalent to a pickup truck load of oak blocks! And then there was the slings, some of which were made of 3” diameter steel cable, up to 40’ long, with hooks that were incredibly heavy! Definitely young mans work!

    next time hold the phone in landscape (long way sideways) not portrait (long way up and down). You'll get more of the vehicle in the frame that. way so the shots don't have to be so frenetic in their back and forth.

    how does she turn round without the outriggers deployed????, anyone notice, the boom alone in cranes this size will tip them over, all the Leeibher cranes put outriggers out first, or at least some support jacks to stabilize it.

      Hi there. The outriggers are functional on this crane. The boom weighs far less than what you are seeing under it.

    Is the crane itself the drive unit? Does it have its own traction motors?

    • @RMSTitanicWSL
      @RMSTitanicWSL 7 лет назад +3

      Strictly speaking, it doesn't have a traction motor. It has a motor that turns drive shafts that can be connected to the innermost axles on each truck. This allowed the crane limited movement without a locomotive so it could reposition itself while working. While it can obviously pull or push several cars (as shown in the video) this was not recommended practice per the manufacturer. We're seeing it at or very close to its maximum speed 4-5 mph using this system, to move any faster requires disconnecting the drive shafts and having it puled or pushed by a locomotive.

    • @popedesign41
      @popedesign41 6 лет назад +3

      No traction motors. Its mechanical drive powered by the upper works.

      @@RMSTitanicWSL Most railroads union contracts wouldn’t permit a Derrick to move cars. The locomotive engineers protected that work, and if the Derrick moved cars, the union would time claim it and get a days pay for each instance!
