- first day of testing the Wing out at Jaws proved to be successful. Only skies the limit now, the ultimate goal would be to soar over waves like a bird.

Man, he's using the wing to position himself on the wave. This is a whole new ball game. Big props.

@@PlanetsandtheWater He may be being towed in initially (not sure), but on the wave he's changing direction in the air, using the wing to position himself properly. Check out the wave at 1:50 for example.
First he seems to be using the wing to make extra aggressive turns, then he launches into the air - left towards the breaking white water. But while airborne he uses the wing to turn, flying over and away from the breaking section, to land perfectly back on the clean section travelling right. Then he launches again after like 3 seconds. It's phenomenal control.

I'm a pilot and also fly sailplanes. I think you are actually experiencing "lift" from the wave and the headwind(air). Similar to soaring from mountains. Incredible footage! IF possible, if you can make and control a Wing with more lift and less drag(generally towards longer and thinner wings with less camber) that would be better.
Had to look up camber. Wiki says.. "In aeronautics and aeronautical engineering, camber is the asymmetry between the two acting surfaces of an airfoil, with the top surface of a wing (or correspondingly the front surface of a propeller blade) commonly being more convex (positive camber). An airfoil that is not cambered is called a symmetric airfoil. The benefits of cambering were discovered and first utilized by George Cayley in the early 19th century.[1]
Yeah you notice when he comes off the back of the wave he drops like a stone but on the waves he comes down really gently

I’ve several times dreamed of flying over breaking waves, like an albatros or a pelican...and now this. Incredible how far Kai is pushing reality into dream (or the opposite?). A slightly bigger wing would have make home been able to sustain the flight in the wave’s face: just a matter of time

Kai is like a mountain climber. They have no fear of heights and he has no fear of massive great waves. This guy is amazing on any watercraft in any size surf.

Yellow!!! the others stalled. Nicely down the line speed!!! finally it is like surfing getting more speed down the line. "arm extentions" will get the kite in the lift area easier - above the dead spot high pressure in front and below the lip.
I was going to say something similar. This is amazing and he's doing about 15 things at the same time, but there's clearly still a lot of room for improvement. Lots of stalling the wings out which looks like it actually slows him down compared to just riding the wave on a board. It must be absolutely exhausting on the hands and arms. Maybe a frangible link with a smaller version of a kitesurfing harness so it break away if he wipes out?
@@madhatter227 Have a look at 1:03 things came together there! Going side ways and faster like surfing down the line = having more air over the wing. The wave is also tapering so going a little "down hill". Kai did play in the danger zone - seagulls pull out earlier. The air compresses in front of the wave causing a dead spot. Will be good to add streamers to check airflow over the wing. Another idea is to go with a bigger wing in lighter wind so that the body size to wing size ratio will be smaller. - I like your idea of freeing some arm power with a harness of sorts, it can then be used for control - flaring/shape shifting/weight shifting etc. (Kai if you pay somebody to wax all your boards you will have time to read some comments from the cheap seats..😆 ) Kai and Laird does not wipe out, real watermen only hug the ocean.

Amazing flying and surfing. I flew hang gliders for years and it is evident that you are soaring the face for brief periods. Pretty amazing and superb control of your wing in the air to position yourself on the wave!

I've been flying hang gliders since '83. These new wings look fun and really augment water sports. But there is a serious evolutionary step in their design that is going to be needed before you can achieve sustained flight on a wave like the pelicans.
