    This is great!
    I'm glad The Algorithm recommended this vid.
    I've been thinking of modifying my suspension to make my 2012 Impreza a better handling car, and this has given me better places to start looking.
    Finding the rear strut brace like that seems impossible now, and there's no competing products, but that looks awesome!

    Thank you for all the great content. I have been on the quest of trying to wake up a NA 2010 Impreza Hatchbank with the 1.5 EL15 motor. Awesome looking and handling car, but very slow. The biggest help so far has been a pedal tuning box. DTS, Pedal Commander. I installed a DTS on our main car TDI Passat to help improve pull out and throttle response and it worked perfectly. The Subaru made a big difference too. The box has several settings to change the curve of the pedal position / throttle body signal. It allowed me to dial in the pedal so the power it makes at 3k rpm would be apparent sooner. Otherwise, the car felt limp all the time. I do not think DTS is available in the U.S., pedal commander is probably another good brand. Try one out! Best bang for your buck for tuning.

    The front brake system can be easily and inexpensively upgraded!
    Some of the necessary parts can be bought on the secondary market from the Subaru Legacy BP Turbo.
    Brake disc 5x100 (315x30) 26300-AG001
    Brake pads 26296-AG030
    Right brake caliper 26292-AG000
    Left brake caliper 26292-AG010
    For installation, you only need to bend or cut off the brake disc cover. Because It is designed for a smaller disc diameter.
    Everything else is installed in regular places without alterations!
    In Russia, we have been practicing this upgrade more then 10 years, and this is the first thing we change in Subaru :)

      Oh. Nice a 315mm rotor! The ones I have are 295mm the extra 10mm will add more brake torque indeed. The original Impreza rotors are 275mm. It was already a big step up. What car did people put the bigger legacy turbo brakes into in russia? Thanks for the info!

      @@JasonLeung-4roller 315x30 we put on different Subaru: BE, BP, SJ, GP, BR. These brakes fit all Subaru 5x100 "BoltOn". Sometimes there is a problem only with rims, regular XV wheels will not fit on these brakes. STI wheels will fit on - 100% no problem.

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  Год назад +1

      @@metaframe2k I suspect that the same mod can happen with the caliper brackets for the 315mm rotor. To be honest the brake bias is almost perfect now. If I went up another 10mm it might be front heavy. Though if I ever add more power I can always try the 315 rotor on my STI wheels. 👍👍

    • @metaframe2k
      @metaframe2k Год назад +1

      @@JasonLeung-4roller No, all 5x100 Subaru front caliper brackets are the same. You can safely put Brembo Gold on them. But on the rear axle it’s not so, because. the rear caliper is not attached to the "fist", but to the brakes shield. And unfortunately from model to model, the mounts there are different. By the way, this is very clearly visible on the Subaru diagrams. As for braking, the change between 294x10 and 315x30 is felt very strongly. And most importantly, 315 discs are harder to overheat.

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  Год назад +1

      @@metaframe2k that's right. I went up to 295mm because I was able to overheat the stock brakes. I went with a high carbon front caliper from the WRX. The pads can do 0-500C. Dot 4 fluid too. Thanks!

      Really... 190 at the wheel you say. What tune? Seems a bit exaggerated for a 2.0L without any engine work. but maybe if you have a 2.5L Are there any other mods that make the engine have 220 at the crank? Poly bushings FTW

    • @TheTechNopal
      @TheTechNopal Год назад

      @Jason Leung This was years back with my original Impreza, totaled it so i have another one and havent worked on it yet, but I started off with some small mods, exhaust delete, billet blocks, intake performance filter and charcoal delete with a lightweight water pump and crank pulley change. All in all, on the dyno it bumped my car to 181ish horsepower if I was really pushing it. Reached out to Rallisport automotive and he worked with me through email tunes. After like 1 month and a half, I dyno'd it again and it was 218 crank, 189 wheel with 91 octane.

      @Jason Leung I'll add this though, not a good idea to redline it with that tune. It was the complete max that the engine could handle and I lost a piston with a broken crank. Cool and informative video, I have a 14 crosstrek with similar mods except the bracing and cvt cooler. Did you have major changes in driving with the bracing or cooling? Do you regret any mods?

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  2 года назад

      The rear strut bar and subframe brace. (pink and yellow) made the rear end considerably more rigid. Excellent for predictable handling. Turns sharper at speed. The CVT cooler helps reduce the likelihood that your CVT will overheat (going into limp mode) when using the transmission for high RPM things like extended climbing (mountain passes) or prolonged spirited driving. If you've never gone into limp mode, you'll most likely not need one. It is a preventative and reliability mod. As for regrets. None really, though the car doesn't (need) all of these mods, it's just nice to know what they all do. For me it's about learning and enjoying the car building process. All mods are additive to the overall performance of the car. Some are much better bang for the buck.

      If you off-road you might tone down the rear sway bar. I think the 20mm rear sway bar would be the most you'd want. Otherwise most if not all the Mods in this vid will help the cars efficiency.

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  Год назад

      The 2017+ impreza is on the global platform. It's stiffer than the 4th gen Impreza. It also shares many of the components with the newer WRX, Forester, outback, legacy and crosstrek all being on Subarus global platform.
      The FB20 is a workhorse engine designed for fuel economy. So it will never be able to contend with a car with a larger powerplant. So if your project has aspirations of being a off the line drag car, it will most likely disappoint you. Without forced induction, it's never going to come.close to bigger engine cars.
      The gains are difficult to quantify since I've never put it on a Dyno. I can say however the car feels much different than when I bought it. I am quite satisfied with how my car handles. Each mod is a cumulative gain.
      What I built my car for may not suit another person. So if you do decide to build your Impreza as a project car, just know the limitations of a NA motor. And also build it to how you want to drive it.
      Good luck.

      The goal of sway bars is to balance roll and oversteer/understeer characteristics.
      Stock suspension or otherwise, increasing a rear sway bars thickness will help induce a tendency for oversteer. This will typically manifest itself more at the limit of traction. For daily purposes, you will feel more agile around corners.
      It may be good. But it may be too much for some. The only way to quantify is with the driver him/herself. 🤓

    Could anyone elaborate on the “wobble feeling”? 19:24

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  Год назад

      Hi, the wobble feeling is the torque converter unlocking and locking at around 20mph. The CVT uses a locking torque converter to smoothe out the power delivery between the engine and transmission. In certain cases when the torque converter is neither locked nor open, you make experience a wobble/shutter/disjointed feeling when accelerating or braking. This is especially prevalent during cold mornings when the transmission and CVT fluid is cold.
      Good luck!

    It's not even that powerful and you've also got stuff in there that wouldn't fly in California due to CARB laws. I have the 2014 sedan and I already installed a hayden transmission oil cooler (in addition to, NOT deleting the stock CVT cooler) and a K&N air filter, last thing for me would just be exhaust. It's not a racecar, the WRX is the race car. That's my other car (2014 sedan model), thank you very much, modified enough to smoke an infiniti q60.
    And BTW, deleting your SPARE TIRE is pretty dumb dude. That's not worth whatever power gain you might get. Good luck getting stranded that makes no sense.

    • @JasonLeung-4roller
      @JasonLeung-4roller  2 года назад +2

      Hi, thank you for leaving a comment.
      The great thing about these mods are they are bolt on and can be removed. CARB or otherwise.
      Oh, You own a WRX? It must be nice. You smoke q60s? How about hellcats, EVos, and Ferraris? C'mon it's all relative.
      Let's get one thing straight. Car tuning doesn't have to be for race cars. One can tune any car to be better than it came from the factory.
      You are looking to get some exhaust? For what? More power? Better sound? Again, it's something you want for your car. The reason why you enjoy your car.
      I enjoy the act of tuning. I enjoy driving the car I've upgraded and built for handling.. It doesn't have to be fast. In fact my turbo Honda family sedan is faster than most WRXs. Maybe even yours :) But I like driving my underpowered naturally aspirated Impreza. Especially to get groceries and takeout.
      I often have to remind myself, who am I to judge another person, based on my own experiences. That person may be living a completely different life.
      Be kind and rewind.
      What does power have to do with handling? What does exhaust have to do with aural pleasure? It's all in the eye of the beholder.
      The spare, I'll deal with.
