Possibly the reason your Auto setting for aperture is making so much noise is that it is at T1.4(wide open) on the lens and it still needs more light to settle itself. If you test it, try zooming in on a light, 60 to 100w. and see if the aperture settles at other then T1.4 and the noise should stop. This is also tied in with your ASA setting.
