I am sure the Lao political leaders who decided to build the project will be forever remembered by Lao people in the generations to come even the project looks costly at the moment. The project changed the nature of a land-locked country for ever.
It is not an easy decision since it is very expensive compared to the economic condition of the country, and it is controversial. Only the most determined and extremely visionary leaders dare to make such a decision.
Look at the US's purchase of French Lousiana and Alaska. How controversial these purchases were in US history! What about now? Deng's opening up China in 1978 was also very controversial. Look at China today!!!
Laos will rise and prosper with such courageous and visionary political leaders. Congrats! Lao people.

over 30% of land in Laos is contaminated by 80 million unexploded cluster bombs. Some of these laid along the tracks of the new railway and had to be cleared before construction. The US put them there, of course, and a group funded by the US is removing them at a rate of about 80,000 per year. At this rate, the bombs should be gone in about 1000 years. From the pictures, it looks like the railway is a cost-efficient design. For example, the rail bridge allows for traffic in only one direction at a time. I certainly hope the investment pays off. If I lived in Lao I would be very hopeful about this project.

Vietnam probably tries to break the ties between Laos and China. Thus country has been increasingly worried about China's influence in Laos. It will try all possible way to keep Laos stay in its orbit. Since 1975, the Vietnamese have been encouraged to migrate to Laos and today they are the undeclared majority in Laos. The cunning and dirty activities of Vietnam towards Laos reflexes the characteristics of its own people, i.e. the ethnic majority in Laos, making up 87% of its total population. It is easily to name some of those characteristics like: cunning, greedy, selfish, dirty, thief-minded, scammer-minded, deceitful, disrespectful, ungrateful, opportunistic, violent, etc. Laos should distance itself from Vietnam at all cost.
