    Black Bolt, greetings from White Bolt! :) Mine is a 2019 Premier, bought it brand new, still honeymooning with this masterpiece. I'm in Canada and my Bolt is getting prepared for its second winter, after passing the first one with flying colors. Never fails me, flies like a silent fighter jet, ridiculously cheap to maintain - my biggest expense so far has been a set of winter tires. Love my Bolt!

    I think your degradation may be even lower then that, GM claimed a 60 kWh battery and many assumed a 58 kWh usable capacity, but multiple Battery teardowns have shown the capacity is actually 57 kWh as labeled by LG chem. So you actually have closer to 2-.5% degradation. WHICH IS AMAZING! Imagine after 300,000 miles the car could still be getting over 200 miles on a charge.

    • @Allan_A

      That's pretty cool! I'm definitely getting mine to 200K, but I'd like to upgrade to the Bolt EUV when used ones hit the market in 2 years! So unlikely to get to 300K. I'd like to see someone do it.
      In summer I can still get 275 miles without trying, and 295-300 if I keep off the highways! So I believe you! I'll be close to 125K when it warms up and I'm excited to see what the max range will be then.

    Black Bolt, thank you very much for sharing your research, as it is still providing valuable data to this day. I couldn't have found more useful info regarding the Bolt's battery. I have deep concerns as my new daily work commute involves 75 miles round trip (18k + miles annually) and I can't get rid of my Honda Pilot fast enough. $3600+ annual gas estimate, YIKES! I'm looking to getting an EV, and as much advice on the Bolt's battery as possible. The battery's 3 - 5 year life span (according to a dealership) is quite scary. The 100k mile warranty isn't reassuring at all as the Bolt's main purpose is that of a commuter, and mileage adds up quickly. I fear having to replace the battery ($16k - $19k) before 5 years of ownership. This is a $50k vehicle if the battery has to be replaced. Not so budget commuter friendly. Chevy should guarantee 200k miles minimum. For $50k, better EVs can be had. Did you ever get your EUV? How is it? What was the final mileage on your '17 Bolt, and how much did you get for the sale/trade in? Thanks, man!

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A  2 года назад

      Hey Matt, I got up to 142K miles on the Bolt EV and was still getting over 240 miles a charge (around 270) in good weather, and over 180 in Minnesota winter. I measured 7-8% degradation, and I was charging to 100% daily, and often got below 5% in winter.
      As a very heavy user I found the car to be 100% reliable. GM ended up giving me a buyback for almost the entire amount I paid, otherwise I was planning on going over 200K.
      All Bolts including the older ones should have the new battery, which has more range and an even better battery management system. I strongly recommend the Bolt.
      I never got the EUV because of the prolonged stop sale, but they are now available and for a really good price, around $28K!
      I ended up getting a 2022 Kia Niro EV for $33K retail - literally signed the papers the day before the Bolt price reduction 😢. I do like the Niro though, good car.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences. 53.5/58=92.2%. 7.8% degradation - at most - is quite good. You have owned it since new? Do you always charge it to 100%? Do you use DC fast chargers regularly? Have you had any issues with the car?

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A  4 года назад +2

      Hey Dennis, thanks for watching. I bought the car in Aug 2019 with 49,010 miles. 53.5 is 95% of current capacity, so 100% is about 56.3. 56.3/58=.97 is how I calculated degradation. I charge to 100% almost daily, but it's on a setting that tops up just before I use the car, and I rarely use fast charging. Only issues I've had: replaced front left hub assembly and sensor ($600), and the radio sometimes freezes on startup, and carplay/android auto don't work. I have a video coming on why it's a good value, and I'll go more in depth on how I use it in the future. Basically I drive around 3K/month and I'd buy it again knowing what I know.

      Black Bolt - I’m with you on the %, although the blinking last bar puts you very close to the bottom, I’d think. Mine (2017 owned since it had 5k miles at 3 months old) now has 55k miles on it and seems to be on the same path as yours, so I’m encouraged. I certainly have enjoyed my nearly 3 year run so far - a fun car!

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A  4 года назад +3

      @@dennislyon5412 the blinking starts with around 15 miles to go, and then gets solid. We had a week in MN last winter with highs below zero and I got it down to 1 percent! Talk about nervous!!! At -20 max range was around 136 miles. I'm NW of Minneapolis, so an airport round trip is 80 miles, plus other trips and I was sweating! I'm impressed with the car, it's too bad GM hardly markets it.

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A  4 года назад +1

      @@douglasalanthompson thanks for watching and commenting. 60Kwhr is the target capacity, but it can vary as low as 57kWh, before the buffer. How Do you check the battery degradation exactly in such a way that you know how much of the battery's life remains, which I assume directly
    determines it's range: For example with the Nissan Leaf, you do so via a third party combination of the Leaf Spy android application and a proprietary

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A  2 года назад +1

      Hey Ronnie, don't think the Bolts have a heat pump, but they are very efficient so it's not a big deal. When temps are around 30 or above you won't lose much range to heat/AC, relative to EPA.
      For context, I averaged 4 miles/kWh year round in my Bolt EV Premier, or 240 miles a charge. Living in Minnesota that means I ran heat 5-6 months, and AC 5 months. We only get a few weeks of spring and fall - when it stops being cold it quickly becomes very hot!

      Hey Marco, GM dealers are not supposed to sell any Bolt EV. But you can still buy them used from other places or individuals. If you get one, charge to 90% (or hilltop reserve if 2017/18). And yes, they will eventually fix the battery (if they ever have enough)!
      I'm in the buyback process, and I'm leaning towards the LEAF. I've done some research and the 2018 and newer don't seem to have the same battery degradation as the originals.
