I was born in 1951 in CapeTown and babtised in the Nederduitse Geregvormeerde Kerk.That is the Dutch Reformed Church.My mother tongue is Afrikaans and I now live in Toronto where I am sometimes confronted as a Brown Person for being Afrikaans speaking..The hell that breaks loose on being so confronted on being Afrikaans speaking usually ends up with those around me scattering around like headless chickens because they were bird brains to begin with.

His videos are good but his pronunciation is terrible. If I were making such videos, I would take the few minutes required to check the pronunciation online. For example, "apartheid" is pronounced "apart-hate", "Xhosa" starts with a click that is quite easy to mimic, and "fynbos" (fine-bush") is pronounced "fain-boss". And I would also take the trouble to copy words such as "Agulhas" correctly! (I am a dual national, being half South African. I have lived for about 38 years in South Africa, from the age of 13.)
I am borne, raised, and still living in South Africa. The Lord has given us a beautiful country. Problems are enough and a reality, but that does not change the beauty and richness of SA. Many people worldwide envy us. Thanks for a very good video.

Apartheid has long since not been the word when people think of SA. Apartheid ended 29 years ago... People now think of load shedding (daily power failure nation wide), corruption, high taxes, violence, xenophobia, poverty, job losses, unemployment... But people focus also on the good. Good food, best weather, coolest animals, diverse nature and people and culture.

I am currently in New Zealand and at the War Museum here, they describe the Boers as "savages" and uncultured, and that they, the British need to protect the land against these terrible people. So Kiwis and Maori warriors went to fight against the Boers. The real reason for the war was that the British wanted their greedy hands on the natural resources, the gold and diamonds. And.. how did the British win? They went to the farms and captured the wives and children and put them in concentration camps, tent camps, with no facilities, where many died of starvation!! And many diseases broke out. The British also went and burned the Boers farms /crops.. so they wouldnt have provisions.

The British only invaded the Boer republics for the second time (after having lost the first Anglo-Boer war) when gold was discovered.in the north (the Transvaal and Orange Free States). 2. The British victors placed Afrikaner women and children in different concentration camps than their black compatriots, hence the the origin of separation and the roots of apartheid. 3. The "apartheid" government of the 1950' copied the racist signs n seats and buses from the American southern states.
Blaming this on the Americans and the British is a joke. Apartheid was supported and enforced by Afrikaaners. It didn't originate from different camps.
I dont think that apartheid was necessarily started by the British or Americans. I think you should go and read Verwoerd's speeches and see what the reasoning was. The Afrikaners never wanted to be in charge of the entire "South Africa", rather, they knew they were outnumbered, and would loose their say in how their lives were lived if they simply let everyone have a say. Under the crown, their language and way of life were under threat, and they were forced to swear allegiance to and pay taxes to the crown. This is the entire reason they left the Cape and started their own countries. The British wanted these countries the moment Gold and Diamonds were discovered. If I moved to Zululand right now with 5M fellow Afrikaners and demand to have a vote in the running of the Zulu Kingdom, surely there would be strife, and the Zulu king would be forced to make rules to say everyone voting has to be a Zulu - meaning black skin, Zulu parentage and Zulu speaking. This is high pathetical because we know monarchy doesn't work like that. It is also not to say Apartheid was correct, but rather that the Afrikaners had very few options left to them. This is similarly the reason Orania was established.

I visited Durban and Port Elisabeth 1970 as a sailor in the Swedish merchant navy. Some years ago there where a documentary on Swedish TV about Karoo Kitar players. Specially one named Hannes Coetzee, he plays on an oil can guitar. And I'm so fascinated about the sound from that guitar. Hannes plays with a special fingerstyle. There is a video on RUclips called Ek Kô Huistoe (africans), that's true Karoo Kitar Blues.

Hello Geodiode! I've been watching your climate and biome series in my own free time as well for research for a personal project. I've also been researching around the web about this in my own free time. I have an idea for a video game that I hope to make in the future and thats why I've been doing this (but also because I'm a nerd.) Anyway I don't know if you've ever played or seen gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 but the game world is amazing because it represents a lot of the native biomes, flora, and fauna of North America. When your riding your horse through the world it's amazing seeing the landscape gradually change from temperate, lush, green, broadleaf forests, to xeric and cold shrubland and grassland, to mountainous temperate coniferous forest, to true xeric desert with various cacti and desert plants. I want to make a game similar to Red Dead but instead of North America it will be set in Eurasia! I've been researching the biomes, ecoregions, flora, fauna, and climates of Eurasia and its been a cool experience! I've learned so many things that I didn't know outside of America! But its also been challenging trying to figure out how to fit all of this into a game world. The sheer amount of biodiversity in these places is baffling. But just imagine riding through the world on your horse, starting in Europe with the temperate Oceanic broadleaf forests, down to the Mediterranean of Italy, Greece, and Spain, over to the Carpathian mixed forests, then to Afghanistan, Iran, etc with xeric shrubland and woodland, then to the Arabian desert and other deserts in the area, then to the grasslands of the Eurasian steppe, then going up north, to the endless Russian and Scandinavian taiga, then over to the Tibetan plateau, the Indian subcontinent, and finally southeast Asia with tropical and subtropical rainforests. You see, in the story earth has been taken over by an extraterrestial species (not technically aliens) and have greatly reduced the human population to rewild most of earth. Most of earth is now wilderness except for a few cities and small towns. So species and ecosystems that were previously endangered are now thriving so as your travelling through the world you can encounter and hunt lions, tigers, bears, wolves, wild dogs, leopards, monkeys, ibex, red deer, fallow deer, sambar deer, chital, wild boar, hyena, and so so so much more. Anyway excuse my rambling, I would love to hear your thoughts on this as a fellow climate and I'm assuming wildlife nerd as well as anyone else. Thanks for reading my essay.

I have often wondered what would have happened if the homelands were recognised. But it was always unlikely. They were very poor areas with no industry, and hence no jobs, so when though they were lived in by black africans, most came into the main parts of South Africa to work
@@Geodiode Yes and the natives also did not want independent of those as they saw it as unfair as they only got less than 13% of the total land while being over 70% of the populace, most of it was not arable and had no natural resources.I don't think was going to work at all.
@@sphethobuthelezi719 It is always unfair to tell people where they can and cannot live. The issue of land needs to be better understood though. It might be true that a small percentage (mostly White farmers) own most of the land but bear in mind that 55% of SA is classified as true desert. The homelands were allocated where the majority of rural Black people settled - generally the most fertile areas, such as the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape (Ciskei and Transkei) and KZN (KwaZulu).

At 7:03 I would like to add some more detail to that statement. The English didn't actually defeat the Boer republics, a peace treaty was signed which is called the Treaty of Vereeniging. This led to the creation of the Union of South Africa.

When the first world war started there were groups of people in South Africa that wanted us to join the side of Germany instead of the British. They started the Maritz Rebellion, because they didn’t want to wage war with German South-West Africa (Present day Namibia). The rebellion was stopped and war started in south west africa.

Yes, there is crime here, but it's not a dangerous country. I have lived here for over 30 years and only had one incident with crime. As long as you're vigilant in certain areas and wise not to be out and about in the wrong places at night, your life here will be a great and joyful one.

Our country has had many problems and still does, but one thing about South Africans - SAFFAS - is that we are forever optimists - always looking forward and hoping for a better future for our beautiful land. Hello Geodiode! I've been watching your climate and biome series in my own free time as well for research for a personal project. I've also been researching around the web about this in my own free time. I have an idea for a video game that I hope to make in the future and thats why I've been doing this (but also because I'm a nerd.) Anyway I don't know if you've ever played or seen gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 but the game world is amazing because it represents a lot of the native biomes, flora, and fauna of North America. When your riding your horse through the world it's amazing seeing the landscape gradually change from temperate, lush, green, broadleaf forests, to xeric and cold shrubland and grassland, to mountainous temperate coniferous forest, to true xeric desert with various cacti and desert plants. I want to make a game similar to Red Dead but instead of North America it will be set in Eurasia! I've been researching the biomes, ecoregions, flora, fauna, and climates of Eurasia and its been a cool experience! I've learned so many things that I didn't know outside of America! But its also been challenging trying to figure out how to fit all of this into a game world. The sheer amount of biodiversity in these places is baffling. But just imagine riding through the world on your horse, starting in Europe with the temperate Oceanic broadleaf forests, down to the Mediterranean of Italy, Greece, and Spain, over to the Carpathian mixed forests, then to Afghanistan, Iran, etc with xeric shrubland and woodland, then to the Arabian desert and other deserts in the area, then to the grasslands of the Eurasian steppe, then going up north, to the endless Russian and Scandinavian taiga, then over to the Tibetan plateau, the Indian subcontinent, and finally southeast Asia with tropical and subtropical rainforests. You see, in the story earth has been taken over by an extraterrestial species (not technically aliens) and have greatly reduced the human population to rewild most of earth. Most of earth is now wilderness except for a few cities and small towns. So species and ecosystems that were previously endangered are now thriving so as your travelling through the world you can encounter and hunt lions, tigers, bears, wolves, wild dogs, leopards, monkeys, ibex, red deer, fallow deer, sambar deer, chital, wild boar, hyena, and so so so much more. Anyway excuse my rambling, I would love to hear your thoughts on this as a fellow climate and I'm assuming wildlife nerd as well as anyone else. Thanks for reading my essay.
Thanks for sharing! When reading novels or playing games, I am always heartened to see attention to detail about the correct placement of biomes and climate zones. I have often wondered what would have happened if the homelands were recognised. But it was always unlikely. They were very poor areas with no industry, and hence no jobs, so when though they were lived in by black africans, most came into the main parts of South Africa to work
@@Geodiode Yes and the natives also did not want independent of those as they saw it as unfair as they only got less than 13% of the total land while being over 70% of the populace, most of it was not arable and had no natural resources.I don't think was going to work at all.
@@sphethobuthelezi719 It is always unfair to tell people where they can and cannot live. The issue of land needs to be better understood though. It might be true that a small percentage (mostly White farmers) own most of the land but bear in mind that 55% of SA is classified as true desert. The homelands were allocated where the majority of rural Black people settled - generally the most fertile areas, such as the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape (Ciskei and Transkei) and KZN (KwaZulu).
@@Geodiode the Umtata area had many industries that closed after 1994 , because of the cheap Chinese imports that were allowed to flood the country .

Well done except for a few minor points not worth mentioning except that Dollar Brand now known as Abdullah Ebrahim is the country's major composer.But then again we as Brown People are accustomed to being Invisible.Under Apartheid we were to Black to pass for White.Now we are considered to White to pass for Black.But then again we are mixed with Hottentots and Bushman and not with Buntus and that held against us.The only one that talks the truth about our history is Lauren's van der Post if you are at all interested in the Truth.

@@Geodiode Also, although the Afrikaners made peace with the British, there were still a lot of Afrikaners that resented the British. When the first world war started there were groups of people in South Africa that wanted us to join the side of Germany instead of the British.
They started the Maritz Rebellion, because they didn’t want to wage war with German South-West Africa (Present day Namibia).
The rebellion was stopped and war started in south west africa.

Yes, there is crime here, but it's not a dangerous country. I have lived here for over 30 years and only had one incident with crime. As long as you're vigilant in certain areas and wise not to be out and about in the wrong places at night, your life here will be a great and joyful one.

Very impressive. One correction the alleged slaves the VOC brought were mainly political dissidents from Java, Celebes and Sumatra. Meaning natives that were creating trouble (ie. revolts) against the VOC and local Sultans.
