The fact that the main character does the smart thing by locking the door, but that action then forces her to run up the stairs like she had just been rolling her eyes at moments before, is just so good. It really encapsulates George's point about this movie intentionally pointing out horror movie tropes, and then seeing if they can get away with doing those same tropes.

"My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!" Definitely one of the best lines of all time.
Wes Craven directed both "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream", thus the Easter egg with the janitor dressed up like Freddy Krueger. The janitor's name was Fred and it was actually Wes Craven as the Janitor in a cameo!
Also, the writers wanted the audience to expect the obvious, that Billy was the killer, which he was, but what they didn't want us to expect was the fact that there were TWO killers. That's the plot twist.

i always loved how this movie handled billy. because it counts on you having watched horror movies your entire life and therefore considering billy to be the obvious choice for the killer. from second 1 he appears you already suspect him, and he is so creepy that you cant help to think he is a red herring the movie is using to fool you. that plus little stuff to make you think he is innocent (like the phone call while he was in jail, or the fact that he couldnt reach the window that fast) that automatically mean nothing when you reach the actual twist of the movie wich is that the killer is actually 2 people. genius

My favorite thing of this movie (aside from the fact that it's like an elaborate murder mystery) is the fact that the killer is always fallible. They aren't unstoppable killing machines like the Terminator, they're just psycho kids. So people actually fight back, like Tatum smacking him in the face with the freezer door and chucking bottles at him, Sydney sliding out of his grip in the bathroom, etc. It makes the whole thing feel more real, but also kind of funny.

    • @hulkslayer626

Also makes you wonder if Sydney didn't get away the first time, the movie would have essentially ended very quick and their plan wouldn't have been very dramatic. Kinda almost like they intentionally didn't want to kill her the first time if ya think about it...

So Matthew saying his line about hitting him with the phone was ad-libbed and kept cause Wes loved it and found it funny. If you watch it more than once and watch Stu and Billy's facial expressions, you can tell that they are the killers especially when Billy pops up at the party in the front door, gives Stu a cue that everything is ready and that he took care of Tatum. Stu and Billy were also in constant communication cause Billy says to Stu "I thought you said she was dead" talking about Gale running her van into the tree.

This film was released in 1996. At that time, the slasher subgenre in horror was... well, almost extinct. The big franchises were either finished or almost finished. And along comes this film, conceived as a satire/homage and swan song/farewell to that specific genre.
And it goes and resurrects it. The following years were filled with new slashers born in the shadow of Scream. By the time that momentum started to lose steam we were already in the 2000s and the old franchises came back thanks to remakes and nostalgia, and the genre is still going strong today, playing with the formula, trying new gimmicks, etc.
And Scream endures. Part 7 is already being planned.

Neve Campbell in this movie was sooo pretty/gorgeous. A fun fact of the movie it´s that Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (agent Dewey), had a romance in the real life, like in the film (you can see the chemistry), and were married and had a daughter (Coco Riley Arquette).

I was a young teen when I saw this in theatres. I was so amped up when I came out! I have gone as Ghostface every year for Halloween since and no matter how many years pass people will always be just a little hesitant around you when you don the costume. I adored the music and the score, especially for Casey's scene. I wish it had just told a more serious story though like Halloween and not gone for the meta jokey style as the movie(s) progressed. The action scenes were so well done as George indicated when he applauded at the opening. 😆 Simone's wail when Ghostface spins around at Casey was amazing! Thank you for posting this. Great memories.

This movie has the greatest opening in the history of horror movies, and one of the best ones period in any genre. Also Scream is elevated horror in the sense that it does something else well, like comedy. Scream is legitimately funny throughout the franchise. The best horror movies do something other than produce scares. They either make you laugh between the trauma or make real commentary about things like Get Out. Love that you did the best horror movies I've ever seen back to back. And don't listen to the doubters every Scream movie is fun. Scream 3 gets hate, but it is the one in the series that will make you laugh out loud with the comedic talent in that cast. Hope you watch them all.🙏

I wish I could post a picture of one of them cuz it's my favorite tattoo but this film is a masterpiece. I'm also surprised George saw her bf tied up. This movie is full of red herrings, like the boots you picked up on. It's actually kind of clever because if you rewatch it, they really don't have to hide who the killers are at all. They just taint the pool of characters to the point where everyone seems to be the obvious guess.

The biggest shock in the movie Is within first 15 min they killed off an A list celebrity. This scream was inspired by a real life murder The Gainsville riper who killed college girls that looked like his mother. Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. Drew accidentally kept really calling 911 during filming the open scene. The mask was inspired by Edvard Munch's painting The Scream, he found the mask in a box while cleaning out the filming location, they looked at dozens of other Masks and they didn't like any. They than bought the rights for the mask.

Also, Christopher Lee made a critique about getting stabbed when he played Sarumon. Jackson wanted something dramatic, then Lee said it's not like that. It's more like your breathe leaving you. Then then also mention how he was stabbed while he was enlisted. Lee said, "Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.”
